Begala

Politico:

Paul Begala, in a shot on Meet the Press that sounds like something other than an offhand remark, suggests an Obama comeback to an expected McCain ad blitz on the Ayers relationship.

...

And I think Governor Palin here is making a strategic mistake. This guilt by association path is going to be trouble ultimately for the McCain campaign. You know, you can go back, I have written a book about McCain, I had a dozen researchers go through him, I didn't even put this in the book. But John McCain sat on the board of a very right-wing organization, it was the U.S. Council for World Freedom, it was chaired by a guy named John Singlaub, who wound up involved in the Iran contra scandal. It was an ultra conservative, right-wing group. The Anti-Defamation League, in 1981 when McCain was on the board, said this about this organization. It was affiliated with the World Anti-Communist League - the parent organization - which ADL said "has increasingly become a gathering place, a forum, a point of contact for extremists, racists and anti-Semites."

Dear NTO08:

I do believe there is a stark difference between McCain’s and Obama’s past associations.

Charles Keating, Chairman of the failed Savings & Loan conglomerate that cost U.S. taxpayers in excess of $120 Billion, was a close and personal friend of McCain. Keating flew McCain and his family to various luxury destinations on his (Keating’s) private jet. McCain’s relatives invested over $300,000 in Keating’s businesses. Keating contributed over $110,000 to McCain’s campaign. Keating’s close and personal relationship with McCain occurred contemporaneously with the massive failure of the S&Ls.

William Ayers (of the Weather Underground) was an antiwar activist and domestic terrorist of the 1960’s. Obama was born in 1961. It defies logic to suggest that Obama was complicit in any of Ayers’ past radical activities - in fact, Obama has denounced those acts.

In the 1990’s, Obama and Ayers worked together on the same antipoverty Board in Chicago. That’s right - they joined efforts to help improve the plight of the poor. Today, Ayers is a College Professor, who is involved in educational, philanthropic and social justice endeavors.

Given Obama’s record as a community organizer and someone who assists the underprivileged, it is hardly surprising that their paths crossed. However, there is no indication that the two men were friends.

For those reasons, I reiterate that McCain’s cozy relationships with those who precipitate the collapse of our financial markets, and cause massive harm to the taxpayers, is a major, undesirable fact.

I find it extremely risky for mcCain to go back to mud slinging and wonder if this hail mary is risking all of the bad in his past to come out...Hope so. Can any of you out there tell whats up with the viet nam vets against john mcCain website.... why is it not in the open when there are ex and current repub congressmen privy to this information about his time as POW and immediately after?

This is what I don't get, Palin is married to a guy that was a member of a group that supports Alaskan secession from the US. Palin apparetnlyat least attended some of the AIP meetings. Isn't that a lot more relevant the Bill Ayers? Why doesn't this get the same coverage? This woman is an extremist.

"On the stump, Sen. John McCain often cites his work tackling the excesses of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff as evidence of his sturdy ethical compass.

A little-known document, however, shows that McCain may have taken steps to protect his Republican colleagues from the scope of his investigation.

In the 2006 Senate report concerning Abramoff's activities, which McCain spearheaded, the Arizona Republican conspicuously left out information detailing how Alabama Gov. Bob Riley was targeted by Abramoff's influence peddling scheme. Riley, a Republican, won election in November 2002, and was reelected in 2006.

In a December 2002 email obtained by the Huffington Post -- which McCain and his staff had access to prior to the issuance of his report -- Abramoff explains to an aide what he would like to see Riley do in return for the "help" he received from Abramoff's tribal clients.

An official with the Mississippi Choctaws "definitely wants Riley to shut down the Poarch Creek operation," Abramoff wrote, The note showed not only the reach of Abramoff, but raised questions about Riley's victory in what was the closest gubernatorial election in Alabama history.

And yet, despite the implications of the information, McCain and the Senate Indian Affairs Committee sat on the controversial portion of the email. According to an official familiar with the investigation, McCain also subsequently refused to make the email public after the report was released.

I want to know why the Obama campaign has not hired Paul Begala? He's one of the best advocates for Obama that I've seen on the circuit!

He is not an "advocate for Obama." He doesn't even like Obama.

He is just a master polemist and could be used to attack McCain.

Sen. Obama's supporters, PLEASE, PLEASE don't get complacent in thinking that the election has been won. Never accept victory before the time for victory has come. Remember, during the primaries, Sen. McCain's campaign was almost over, everybody thought he would not win the nomiation, and, he did.

This election is not yet over, Sen. Obama has not won, we don't know that he will. Therefore, Sen. Obama's campaign should fight with every breath. DO NOT watch the polls. People do lie to pollsters. They need to act is if they are the underdogs (in fact, they are the underdogs). The campaign should act as though they have everything working against them, not for them.

We are 29 days away. ANYTHING can happen during this time.

Negative ads worked in the past and that is why McCain/Palin ticket is using them now.

Question is:

Has the American people grown up enough to know the difference between negative ads and truth? Time will tell.

Now comes the real test for Americans. As the negative campaigning goes into high gear and Palin bares her fangs like a cornered animal, how many will succumb to the lies? How many will be carried away by the sick innuendos? How many will forget what's truly at stake in this election?

It appears Fox "News" in collaboration with the GOP and McCain's campaign have pledged to unleash an all-out smear assault on our campaign.

The only way we can help fight Fox "News" and Bush-McCain wrong headed policies is to donate what ever we can to help the Obama/Biden campaign.

Please give whatever you can. This is a turning point in the 2008 Presidential election. You do not want to wake up November 5, 2008 and regret not having done enough.
