Colombian Singer Shakira Endorses Obama

CHICAGO — Colombian superstar Shakira says Democrat Barack Obama is the best candidate for president, citing his leadership skills.

In a statement Saturday, the Grammy-winning pop artist said Obama can restore peace and the world's confidence in the United States. Obama faces Republican presidential nominee John McCain in the Nov. 4 election.

Obama said he was honored to receive the singer's endorsement. The Illinois senator praised Shakira as a role model for young Latinas in the U.S. and beyond.

Shakira encouraged U.S. Latinos to vote in November.

The United States "has a profound importance to me, and I think to the whole world as well," she said.

My Family came from from Colombia in the early 1960's and now we number over 35 throughout the country. We used to vote Democrat like new inmigrants, but we slowly we have been changing to independent and or Republican. In this coming election, the country is facing a economic/ financial crisis and at the same time concerns with terrorirsts. Right now we don't feel is time to experiment with a a newby candidate such as Obama who only had 130 days senate experience before deciding to run for president. McCain has the required experience and knowledge to handle this type o crisis.
Whether Shakira endorses Obama will not have any effect on the the Colombian - American community in the US as the majority who support Uribe the most popular president that Colombia ever had (over 84% popular support) also support McCain. This support among the majority of Colombian - Americans is reflected by their opinions of support of McCain in the Univision forums and
in the Colombian newsmedia like El Tiempo forums.

My wife is from Cartagena and she and all her Colombians friends that are registered voters are voting for Obama/Biden and would never think about voting Republican. At the Univision forum Colombian forum members, there has been request for opinions of whom they will support in the next election and the majority of them have come out in support of McCain. It is the same in the El Tiempo newpaper forum on US news of the US elections. The majority of those who are making comments are in favor of McCain. Even the Colombian government with Uribe at its head had made no secret of their support for McCain. Foreign Minister Araujo in an interview with Diana Tucker made no secret of his support for McCain as the most qualified to be be president of the US. Need I remind you that President Uribe enjoys overwhelming support among Colombian - Americans and his government support carries a lot more weight than that of a singer.

Who cares? Univision does not represent the entire Hispanic population and its evident by the overwhelming Hispanic support for Obama. The fact that you cite "El Tiempo" is ridiculous in itself as I am sure you are aware that it is ran by the family of Colombia's Secretary of Defense, Juan Manuel Santos. In other words there is an obvious bias. I've read the comments in "El Tiempo" and it's flooded with nothing but i.gnorant and r.acist remarks. My family is Colombian and the ONLY reason many Colombians support McCain is because of the TLC. Fortunately, their opinion does is not come with a vote. I am proud of my Colombian heritage but I am an American and vote with the interests of the U.S and myself in mind and not in the interests of Colombia.

Well VXW. Now in English. I'm also Colombian who became a US Citizen this year. I live in New York City and my parents live in Jackson Heights. The majority of Colombian I talk to are voting or supporting Obama. Also, how can you support McCain. You remind me a friend of mine who voted for Bush. In the 1st 4 years of Bush he lost his job 3 times as the places closed down. I asked him why he was voting for Bush if he was not better off and he said that that Kerry guy just didn't know enough. Many of us "FOREIGNERS" have been living in the US for generations and have served in wars that this country has been involved in. We have bled and died for America just like non "FOREIGNERS". We came here and our parents came here in search of the American Dream.
