Virginia GOPer Writes Racist Anti-Obama Column

The LA Times reports:

A local newspaper columnist, in a spoof of Obama's platform, wrote in one recent piece that the Democrat would hire the rapper Ludacris to paint the White House black (a reference to a pro-Obama song by Ludacris), and divert more foreign aid to Africa so "the Obama family there can skim enough to allow them to free their goats and live the American Dream." He joked that Obama would replace the 50 stars on the U.S. flag "with a star and crescent logo," an Islamic symbol, and that his policy on drugs would be to "raise taxes to pay for Obama's inner-city political base."

The columnist, Bobby May, is also treasurer of the Buchanan County Republican Party and was listed in a July news release as the county's representative on McCain's Virginia leadership team, though he said his column reflected his views alone, and he denied it was racist.

Actually, it's refreshing to hear some honest, unapologetic right-wing racism in this campaign, instead of all those sly winks and nods to racial stereotypes that have been fairly steady fare of the Republicans during this election.

No plausible deniability here. The country gets to see exactly where the GOP stands. Too bad this didn't slip directly out of the McCain campaign, but the big guy's handlers are probably too smart to make that sort of slip into brutal honesty.

And before Republican posters start flaming me on this, I'm not saying that all Republicans are racists at heart. But it's hard to deny the fact that the percentage of white Americans who are virulent racists are the meat and potatos crowd the GOP is always trying to appeal to, even if subtly. The subtly is just a mask, though, and it's refreshing to see what's really there when that mask falls away.

Let's not forget those supporters of HRC who are going to vote for Honest John because they know he'll have the same policies on women's rights, appoint the same sort of justices to the Supreme Court and work for health care and social justice just like Sister Hillary.

There's plenty of racists to go around for both parties.

Bobby May deserves our sympathy. It must really be tough going through life that ignorant and stupid. Uncovering this kind of ignorance and addressing it at some level will at least serve to move this country forward. Since the Bush administration has thrown us so far backward and to the right, we could use all the forward movement we can get.

He and the rest of the media have spent the entire election dancing around it while harping on why blacks are voting for the Democrat who just happens to be black. When he has to cover a story about white racism he gets noticeably subdued and tries to change the subject or discussion angle as quickly as possible.

I sent an e-mail to McCain's Senate office and to the White House, asking them to speak out about this. Although I don't expect a reply, perhaps everyone should exercise their freedom of speech by sending e-mails to McCain's Senate office and calling his local campaign headquarters asking them if this is the sort of campaign they plan to conduct. If enough people do it, they might get the message.

It's pathetic to think that a person is bad because they are "black"....thankfully the younger generation are way beyond this type of backwards, mean spirited thinking. I am so tired of "some" white people going down this road as if they are the best and brightest in the world. It's just sickening how some think they are so much better than others simply because they are white.

On the discussion of race, whites have NEVER looked good. LBJ only signed the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts because there were riots going on and the US was looking bad in world opinion. Even Hillary left that out and tried to paint it as white benevolence. They have been getting passes throughout history while telling blacks to "get over it" even as they pile on the insults thru Hollywood portrayals and TV media. There's just too many injustices to count. And what's even more incensing is how so many are clueless and act like there's nothing to answer for.

Spoof? What demented idea of balance produces this interpretation? I read the original piece. Barely keeping my breakfast down the whole time.

It is no spoof. There is too much pure anger, racism and unmitigated hatred for this to be spoof. I would also suggest that the writer might need a history of such lighthearted larks against other political figures for this to be even slightly considered as anything but the racist bile it is.

This is the next four weeks of the McCain campaign, ladies and gentlemen. Especially through local surrogates, they will be spewing the blackness that lives in their hearts, trying to turn every good American into a vicious, mean, foul, perverted animal like themselves.

We can't put up with it. We have to fight it. When your local paper runs filth like this, call them, email them, write them, tell them you are cancelling your subscriptions, etc. When local radio stations let their talking heads spout this filth, call them out. Tell them you will boycott their advertisers.

Take positive action! Fight filth with fire! Get some gusto and use your anger to do good, not evil. That's how we can win and feel good about ourselves in the process.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. Buchanan County is one of those armpit of the universe places deep in Virginia's Appalachia region where Virginia, Kentucky and West Virginia come together. Beautiful country. The people, not so much. We learned all we needed to know about these folks during the late primaries.
