Canadian Columnist's Palin Joke Draws Fox News Outrage

NY Times:

Heather Mallick, an opinion columnist for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Web site, is known for her use of humorous exaggeration. But last week after removing a column by Ms. Mallick, which said that Gov. Sarah Palin has "a toned-down version of the porn actress look" and suggested that Republican men were sexually inadequate, the government-owned CBC ruled that its opinion writers had to stick to the facts even when they were joking around.

Although the broadcaster's Web site, www.cbcnews.ca, has relatively few readers in the United States, Ms. Mallick's comments became an issue last month on the Fox News Channel, which, because of Canadian cable TV rules that limit its distribution, has relatively few viewers in Canada. Greta Van Susteren, the host of "On the Record," condemned the column as "beyond vicious" and repeatedly referred to Ms. Mallick as "a pig." A right-of-center columnist for The National Post, of Toronto, also criticized the column.

The CBC ombudsman, Vince Carlin, said in a report that his office had received more than 300 complaints about the column.

Sarah is the worst type of femme fatale. She uses her sexuality to her advantage, but cried sexism! when it doesn't work and people call her on it. She wears sex kitten hair and makeup, but keeps the glasses on to look smarter (does she really need glasses?) She is no feminist, and young women who idolize her need to understand this. I'm sick of these newbies who proclaim, after going to one of her events, "Feminism is so much fun! What is Sarah wearing?" yikes.

Sarah Palin winks and flirts all through her debate, but journalists do not get to associate that with behavior that's self-sexualizing. In other words, it's ok for Palin demean to demean professional women, but it's not ok for other professional women to call her on it.

That's exactly right. And while it's only a rumor that her lipstick liner is really permanantly tatooed on, it's not a rumor that she pretty much piles on the makeup. Add the cutesy looks, the high voice, piled up hair and glasses, and heels, and you have some kind of deliberate "look" that they feel will get attention. I don't know if it's a porn look, but it's not a normal look. It has attracted attention. But at some point, I say to myself, god...tone it down, even for a few minutes. She's a grandmother for gods sake, she's not 21. When she visits heads of state, does she have to shove her legs out front and make sure her skirt is high and tight? I mean, as a woman I know there's a way to sit that does not show that, unless of course you're flirting. We have the date sit, and the regular sit. Sara Palin seems to always be on a date.
