RICHMOND, Va. — The wife of Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel plans to endorse Democrat Barack Obama.

Lilibet Hagel has scheduled a 10 a.m. news conference in Alexandria, Va., on Tuesday with Susan Eisenhower, the granddaughter of Republican President Eisenhower. Susan Eisenhower also is an Obama supporter.

Hagel, R-Neb., has made no endorsement. Lilibet Hagel said in an Associated Press interview that her decision was independent of her husband. She said she didn't know whether he would make an endorsement or whom he would support.

"You'd have to ask him," Lilibet Hagel said.

She said it will be her first endorsement of a Democrat and that perilous world conditions were a factor.

"The fact is we're in two wars, two of the longest we've ever been in. We've run up a third of our nation's debt in just the past eight years. We're in the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression," she said.

The Hagels know John and Cindy McCain, and she said her endorsement was not meant to slam them.

"This isn't anti-McCain. This is pro-Obama. I'm just convinced he's the right person," she said.

The Hagels vote in Nebraska, but they have lived in Washington's Virginia suburbs since Hagel won his first Senate term in 1996.

A moderate Republican and veteran wounded in combat in the Vietnam War, Hagel has been a fierce and credible critic of the Bush administration's Iraq policies. During the summer, he accompanied Obama and Democratic Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was briefly the object of speculation as a possible surprise Obama running mate selection.

Hagel has decided not to seek re-election, and will leave the Senate when his second term officially ends in January.

(This version CORRECTS Corrects that Susan Eisenhower is granddaughter, sted daughter of Eisenhower.)

This is wonderful news and thank you to all who put country over party. All for the good of the party is the kind of thing you see in China and the former Soviet Union.

Great news. It's good to see Republicans who value country over party openly supporting Obama/Biden. see. republicansforobama...I think there are two separate groups of republicans who are supporting Obama. Country, patriotism first.

The Hagels make me proud to live in Nebraska. I am a democrat, but I have always liked Hagel as a man who stands up for what he beleives, even if it disagrees with his party. He is the maverick that McCain can only wish he was these days.

I think Chuck will do it closer to election day as an October surprise! I would also think he would make a great Secretary of Defense.

She is speaking for her husband. Oh I am sure she is endorsing him as well, but, she is definatly speaking for her husband. I think it is really sad that in the Capitol things are that seperate that you just can't come out and say who you think is the better candidate because of party affiliations. Chuck it's okay everyone sees what a nut this guy is. I don't think you are the only one who feels this way especially after their slimey weekend in the McCain camp.

Yer damned tootin'. Only a REAL military man uses force other than a last option. Chuck hated this war like he did the one in Viet Nam. Chuck is the man. End of Story.

Barack Obama for our next President! (your kids might even get to go to school!)

Wesley Clark is my guy for that position. I really admire and respect him and his views. He comes across as a honest, unstanding man and true American. He has loads of experience based on his military history, McCain doesn't even come close, plus we know how McCain got pushed up the ladder....legacy/family affirmative action.

That's true... Crashup McCain! I like Wes Clark too. He might be a great Secretary of State or Joint Chief of Staff.

Good for her, McCain-Palin’s tactics are subversive and dangerous. The McCain campaign’s false narrative exaggerating Obama’s relationship with Bill Ayers is a new low and putting Obama’s well being at risk, with crowds yelling terrorist and kill him. A Republican called into Washington Journal this morning appalled by the McCain campaign’s dangerous tactics specifically the tone of McCain an Palin’s rallies.. Rudy was on MSNBC this morning implying that Obama was practically planting bombs with Ayers, and Joe Scarborough marginalized Mica Brzezinski when she tried to challenge Giulani’s outrageous assertions.

This is an e-mail I sent to MSNBC.

Joe Scarborough allowed Rudy Giuliani to make outrageous assertions in reference to Obama's relationship with Bill Ayers. Giulani, a McCain operative practically implied that Ayres and Obama were plotting bombings together, considering McCain supporters are yelling kill him and terrorist, at campaign rallies, Giuliani's assertions are dangerous. When Mica tried to challenge Giuliani's assertions, Joe talked over her, declaring "she was in love" like some immature school girl.

Joe owes Mica an apology, as well as clarification of Rudy Giuliani's dangerous assertions.

Contact MSNBC, this narrative is dangerious.

Good on 'er.

and i'll tell you what - i'd rather chuck not officially endorse obama and get re-elected than officially endorse obama and get replaced with a right-wing nut at some point by the yokels in his home state.

to me, this seems like it IS his endorsement (wink wink, nudge nudge).

I wonder how many other prominent Republicans have the courage to publically endorse Obama. Right now it seems the women are the true heroes of the party.

Honestly speaking, I wonder if the Powell endorsement is a good thing. It brings color back as an issue and I’m not sure of Mr. Powell wants to go there. While a rational person can see that color may have nothing to do with that endorsement, that rational person is likely already voting for Obama and is not the target so late in the game...may help a bit with veterans perhaps. I just don't know at this point.

At this point it's not about color anymore. It's about what's right and what's wrong for the country. It's not about race nor anyting else at this point.

It seems to me that McCain and Palin are the racist here. Especially after yesterday at those rallies when their supports called out terrorist and "kill Him". Who do you think they were talking about? Race is an issue here. Why do you think so much controversy surrounds this whole election..let's be honest here. McCain and Palin at this point are desparate because they are losing ground in this election. Race is the true motivating factor behind the McCain campaign. The cover has been pulled back. At this point, Powell can do no harm. The damage is already there.

Powell did state in an interview that it would be an exciting moment if Obama became President.....I forgot where I read that, but he did in fact say that. I think he would love to endorse Obama but with the position he was in/associations he probably feels it is best to claim victory in silence :)

Oprah was one of the first to endorse Obama very early in the game. She did so in May 2007. She also had a huge fund raiser for him...

Mrs Hagel you are a true patriot. Putting country over party takes a lot of courage. If you take a lot of heat for this, just remember there are alot of people behind you supporting your decision.

I have always considered myself a conservative Republican--the first time I voted, it was for Goldwater. I have an extremely conservative background--grandaddy fought for the Confederacy and I was raised in the segregated south. My first job was working for Sen. Strom Thurmond. Now, I can no longer support any Republican ticket. I have not left the Republican party, it has left me. If the last eight years represent a conservative Republican agenda, then I want the oppposite. I don't care if it is called liberal or even radical, the agenda pursued by Bush/Cheney is an abject failure and McCain/Palin will continue in the same vein. As for McCain's alleged honor, he proved that he was willing to forgo any pretence of honor when when he chose Gov. Pain--a complete know-nothing and a total embarassment for his running mate.

Great post. Supporting Obama versus a Republican doesn't mean you change your core values- it means you expand upon them.

Get it Mike! That is a GREAT and unifying point. We liberals get painted like we're all dirty hippies (although I am and proud of it), but Democrats hold a lot of the same principles that Conservative do. It's the little differences that divide us. Like race.

Your not alone. My most hard core republican friends whom all called me a commie for not supporting Bush for 2 elections are voting Obama. Although they will not change their party they are willing to cross party lines because they know McCain/Palin are not a acceptable choice.

Wow, great post, NanaF. I agree with you about the "labels" -- maybe we just all want our country back on the right track... you don't have to belong to a party for that! Country First with Obama-Biden '08

Very well, Nana, you are a thinking person concerned with what is best for your country. I applaud you. I did opposite in California, being a democrat and voting for Arnold because he was better than the other guy.

Sgt. Chuck Hagel will always be a hero of mine. A TRUE HERO. Tell me, is there any tougher man in the military than a sergeant? Is there any award (ANY!) that is more coveted than the CIB? That's the Combat Infantry Badge... it means you actually bloodied and got bloodied. Up close and personal. Ask a G.I. what that means, like me.
My pride now extends to his wife and if Barack doesn't find a position for this brutally frank man in his administration- he is a fool.
I believe in the "principles" of the Democratic Party (not you Nancy, you're a disgrace), but my allegiance will always be towards the brave soldier first.

Barack Obama (unless you like banana republics)
