RICHMOND, Va. — The wife of Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel plans to endorse Democrat Barack Obama.

Lilibet Hagel has scheduled a 10 a.m. news conference in Alexandria, Va., on Tuesday with Susan Eisenhower, the granddaughter of Republican President Eisenhower. Susan Eisenhower also is an Obama supporter.

Hagel, R-Neb., has made no endorsement. Lilibet Hagel said in an Associated Press interview that her decision was independent of her husband. She said she didn't know whether he would make an endorsement or whom he would support.

"You'd have to ask him," Lilibet Hagel said.

She said it will be her first endorsement of a Democrat and that perilous world conditions were a factor.

"The fact is we're in two wars, two of the longest we've ever been in. We've run up a third of our nation's debt in just the past eight years. We're in the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression," she said.

The Hagels know John and Cindy McCain, and she said her endorsement was not meant to slam them.

"This isn't anti-McCain. This is pro-Obama. I'm just convinced he's the right person," she said.

The Hagels vote in Nebraska, but they have lived in Washington's Virginia suburbs since Hagel won his first Senate term in 1996.

A moderate Republican and veteran wounded in combat in the Vietnam War, Hagel has been a fierce and credible critic of the Bush administration's Iraq policies. During the summer, he accompanied Obama and Democratic Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was briefly the object of speculation as a possible surprise Obama running mate selection.

Hagel has decided not to seek re-election, and will leave the Senate when his second term officially ends in January.

(This version CORRECTS Corrects that Susan Eisenhower is granddaughter, sted daughter of Eisenhower.)

Thanks for your honesty Lilibet.

Chuck, you know you want to endorse Obama. What are you waiting for?

This is refreshing news.

There are ordinary Americans who, free from partisan orthodoxy, still simply make their best decision based on the choices available.

Keep up the good work, Mrs. Hagle.

Thank you Mrs. Hagel. Country over party - we don't see that enough among Republicans.

Thank God for people like Mrs. Hagel, who sees the needs of the country before her relationship with John McCain. Her decision is about the country and she should be proud that she made it.

I hope that Chuck Hagel will soon be behind her in support for Barack Obama.

Soon the GOP will attack her patriotism, Christianity (if she is a Christian). That's what they do, its either with us or against us regardless of the issues let equal pay for equal work for WOMEN, or WOMEN rights!

She is a wonderful, conservative Republican, Catholic and who like her husband believes blind support of President and Party is actually unpatriotic.

Wow - imagine that, a couple of rational Republicans. I can only hope there are enough with the same courage and patriotism to denounce the hate mongering currently being done by McCain and Palin themselves.

Lilibet Hagel is voting for Obama and Bill and Hillary are voting for McCain. So, McCain is +1 over Obama.

Even if they do, I hardly think 2 votes will decide the election.

You pool their 2 with 2 more who are emboldened by their courage and 2 more who are inspired by the first 4's conviction and so on and so on and so on. Pretty soon, you've got a groundswell that can't be ignored. That, my dear smark, is how you win an election. President Obama is winning this thing, one voter at a time.

Bill and Hillary are registered in NY, which is a blue state anyway. It won't matter how they vote. The Hagel's district in Nebraska is a swing district. Nebraska is one of only two states that split their electoral votes. Omaha/Lincoln is currently looking like it will go Obama and that area has two of the three electoral votes in the state. The Hagel votes will make a difference.

I doubt Bill and Hill will vote for Palin/McCain.

Nothing would gall Hillary more than seeing Palin become the forst woman president by default.

The "Clinton" effect. They sure showed their true colors, didn't they? Doesn't really surprise me, I'm old enough to remember how they split the country apart. Good economy while they were in office? Poppycock. They just pushed the debt forward and deregulated the phone companies, deregulated the stock market, installed NAFTA and became members of the CFR. Any more stupid question?

I was not going to even bother to vote this year, until Barack Obama came from nowhere. He's our best chance, at redemption, for all the crap since Ronnie RayGun.

Sen Hagel has been Bushco's worst critic from the wrong side of the Isle. He would be a total hypocrite if he were to endorse Mc Same and frankly I don't see that happening. He will follow his wifes lead at the appropriate time when he can have the most impact.

I am also a registered Republican but I am a purple voter. I am also a 43 year old woman with 4 kids...soccer mom..joe six pack....watching my 401K down by 30% this year and my 529 college plans all in the negative growth range. My husband is a Democrat and is a blue voter. I never let his decisions sway me. Luckily Mrs. Hagel is the same way. Palin disgusts me. She is an afront to all hard working women who struggle for respect in a man's world. Her nudge nudge wink winks sicken me so and I am glad to see the majority of the population not falling for it.

Go Obama.

LOL...I agree. I've been thinking he's been wanting to endorse Obama for months now, but hasn't. NE is a very red state, and it may do him harm to endorse Obama when it's pretty clear his state will go for McCain. I mean, if he were really pro-McCain, I think he would've endorsed him by now.

No, he's waiting. He''ll endorse late, in Omaha. There's one EC vote up for grabs there and it could very well go to Obama.

Maybe even a joint endorsement Warren Buffet and Hagel...
