RICHMOND, Va. — The wife of Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel plans to endorse Democrat Barack Obama.

Lilibet Hagel has scheduled a 10 a.m. news conference in Alexandria, Va., on Tuesday with Susan Eisenhower, the granddaughter of Republican President Eisenhower. Susan Eisenhower also is an Obama supporter.

Hagel, R-Neb., has made no endorsement. Lilibet Hagel said in an Associated Press interview that her decision was independent of her husband. She said she didn't know whether he would make an endorsement or whom he would support.

"You'd have to ask him," Lilibet Hagel said.

She said it will be her first endorsement of a Democrat and that perilous world conditions were a factor.

"The fact is we're in two wars, two of the longest we've ever been in. We've run up a third of our nation's debt in just the past eight years. We're in the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression," she said.

The Hagels know John and Cindy McCain, and she said her endorsement was not meant to slam them.

"This isn't anti-McCain. This is pro-Obama. I'm just convinced he's the right person," she said.

The Hagels vote in Nebraska, but they have lived in Washington's Virginia suburbs since Hagel won his first Senate term in 1996.

A moderate Republican and veteran wounded in combat in the Vietnam War, Hagel has been a fierce and credible critic of the Bush administration's Iraq policies. During the summer, he accompanied Obama and Democratic Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was briefly the object of speculation as a possible surprise Obama running mate selection.

Hagel has decided not to seek re-election, and will leave the Senate when his second term officially ends in January.

(This version CORRECTS Corrects that Susan Eisenhower is granddaughter, sted daughter of Eisenhower.)

Where is Colin Powell?

I believe O is holding him back until he needs him in anticipation of a hard hail mary hit close to election day from the nut. I believe he has already told O he will endorse him. If you will recall during the primary, top endorsers would trickle out right after O received a hard hit.

I agree, I suspect there is a well of endorsers who will be brought out when needed.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a deluge in the days just before the election.

Hope you are right.

O is nothing if he's not a great strategist. He's a man who can plan ahead.

I'm wondering too. The only reason to put off this long is he's voting McCain OR he's waiting to see what "October Surprise" is sprung then he backs Obama when some International threat suddenly takes hold and people start leaning McCain. Wishful thinking?

Hiding in shame at what has become of the USA since he helped push for the Iraq War and got tangled up with GOP politics. His name and credentials helped sell the war that has helped to break our collective backs and destroy Iraq.

There are sane, intelligent women stuck in the Republican party. You can bet the Palin Effect will motivate more of them to come out of the closet.

Go Lllibet, Go!

Yes, true that. I wondering if he is waiting closer to election day, as I suspect with Colin Powell.

I have also heard that Julie Nixon is an Obama supporter. If she is, I wish she would weigh in. One thing about Pat and Richard Nixon, they raised really lovely and well-spoken daughters.

How old are you? Twelve? There's a lot of nasty things I could say, but I'll chalk up your ignorance on being a toddler.

Um, OK...... do we really care who the SPOUSES of politicians support?? This is getting ridiculous. maybe I'll hold a news conference tomorrow about my choice....

Um, ok ..... yes, we do! Behind every great man is a strong woman (e.g., Barack and Michelle).

Yea, you are right... Politician spouses really aren't a big factor in anything. That's why the attack on Michelle Obama have been kept to a minimum.... Right?

Many women do care. I know my wife cares about the thoughts of official's spouses. She cared about Hillary's statements when Bill did the Lawinski to gauge Hillary's demeanor. She cares because spouses have more influence than you would think. Have you ever had to "run it by my wife" first? So a spouses endorsement is relevant to how we see the candidates, especially when they cross party lines to do so. It also provides a bit of insight to the relationships, are the spouses independent thinkers or just go along?

Yes, this is great news. And I too want to know where Colin Powell is. Before this announcement I had read that Powell's son said his father probably won't come out for either party. But, now, the road that McCain/Palin have taken, how can he not. He is an honorable man who I want to believe will do what he needs to do for this country.

This is of course pretty much an endorsement of Sen. Obama by Sen. Hagel himself. During the Democratic primary race, a number of supporters of Sen. Clinton - most of them tied through personal loyalty - let it be known more or less that Obama was the preferred candidate, and that family members would be voting for him.

What has McCain/Palin done, but embarrassed many in the GOP, many of whom are already running futilely from radioactive Bush/Cheney? I only hope the spectacle of the fulminating nativist no-nothing-ism of McCain/Palin rallies is featured on every network every damned day; and that even more people - especially Republican voters - are shamed by this disgusting, retarded, pandering display of scummy political scheming.

I read of this wonderful news last night on Daily Kos. Someone made a prediction there will be an Obama rally in Omaha where Chuck will formally endorse Barack. Judging from the primaries, I can quite easily see this happening. This individual further predicted the McCain campaign may have caught a whiff of this and if so, why Palin went to Nebraska over the weekend.

I truly hope Senator Hagel makes this move.
