RICHMOND, Va. — The wife of Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel plans to endorse Democrat Barack Obama.

Lilibet Hagel has scheduled a 10 a.m. news conference in Alexandria, Va., on Tuesday with Susan Eisenhower, the granddaughter of Republican President Eisenhower. Susan Eisenhower also is an Obama supporter.

Hagel, R-Neb., has made no endorsement. Lilibet Hagel said in an Associated Press interview that her decision was independent of her husband. She said she didn't know whether he would make an endorsement or whom he would support.

"You'd have to ask him," Lilibet Hagel said.

She said it will be her first endorsement of a Democrat and that perilous world conditions were a factor.

"The fact is we're in two wars, two of the longest we've ever been in. We've run up a third of our nation's debt in just the past eight years. We're in the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression," she said.

The Hagels know John and Cindy McCain, and she said her endorsement was not meant to slam them.

"This isn't anti-McCain. This is pro-Obama. I'm just convinced he's the right person," she said.

The Hagels vote in Nebraska, but they have lived in Washington's Virginia suburbs since Hagel won his first Senate term in 1996.

A moderate Republican and veteran wounded in combat in the Vietnam War, Hagel has been a fierce and credible critic of the Bush administration's Iraq policies. During the summer, he accompanied Obama and Democratic Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was briefly the object of speculation as a possible surprise Obama running mate selection.

Hagel has decided not to seek re-election, and will leave the Senate when his second term officially ends in January.

(This version CORRECTS Corrects that Susan Eisenhower is granddaughter, sted daughter of Eisenhower.)

Only thing that worries me about Hagel is his earlier experience heading up the electronic voting machine company that has now become ES&S, the firm that made the machines that spit my vote out the back in 2004! You remember it, folks; over four thousand of us North Carolinians didn't get to vote that year. I mean, we voted, but they were 'lost' because the bucket in the machine overflowed. At least that is what they told us.

Anybody got any update on Hagel's more recent 'Electronic Voting' activity?

Brick

Wiki - While serving during the Vietnam War, he received the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

He was deputy administrator of the VA. In 1982 he resigned over cutting funding and an admin who referred to veterans groups as "greedy", and to Agent Orange as not much worse than a "little teenage acne".

After leaving, Hagel co-founded Vanguard Cellular and served as president and CEO of the USO and on the board of the American Red Cross, Eisenhower World Affairs Institute and Bread for the World.

He served as CEO of American Information Systems Inc, a voting machine manufacturer. He did not disclose his position as CEO of the company in his mandated disclosures, until its name-change to Election Systems & Software (ES&S) in 1997.

He had a minor ownership interest in ES&S through its parent company The McCarthy Group as of January 29, 2003, when The Hill reported that, due to his ownership interest, “Hagel’s ethics filings pose disclosure issue”. He sold those interests.

On August 18, 2005, he openly mocked Vice President Dick Cheney's assertion that the Iraqi insurgency was in its "last throes."

In November/ December 2005, Hagel stated: "To question your government is not unpatriotic — to not question your government is unpatriotic." and "I took an oath of office to the Constitution, I didn't take an oath of office to my party or my president."

Who would want to be associated with McCain now, as low as he's sunk? Not anyone with any kind of morals, that's for sure. I'm sure there will be an ad in Neb. about this turn of events.

This could lead to a potential ad for Obama...Republicans for Obama !!!
The ad could end by them stating loudly...( We are CHANGING THE COURSE to a better direction )

Finally,MISSION ACCOMPLISHED !!

Am I the only one who hates the use of the word "sted" of "instead"? UGH!

Anyways, I think Chucky wants to endorse Obama but may be afraid of the Mac Attack.

i think that as these first few republicans stand up and start speaking out against the mac and please campaign, more repubs will follow. maybe now they are starting to realize what a price they paid getting in bed with the american Taliban aka the Xtrian extreme right. it may take some time for the effect of the kool aid to wear off.

The Hagels are both the old fashioned and true type of Republicans - not raving fundies or neocons. Conservative - yes. Practical - yes. Patriots - yes. They do not see a red or blue America.

Hagel is a huge proponent of vets rights and worked in the VA years ago - then he quit in protest because the admin at the time wanted to lower benefits.

He is a master of foreign policy with a eyes wide open outlook - his letters to Condi Rice re: the potential for trouble he saw coming with Russia and Georgia were profoundly accurate - letters she never answered.

He will serve President Obama well in almost any cabinet position he is given. I am a lib in red state Ne and differ with Hagel on many of views - but he does not spew the mindless and divisive garbage like so many others do. I am proud he is my Senator. He is a good and intelligent and thoughtful man - we need more like him.

I'm surprised more Republicans aren't coming out. The Republican party has become the party of callousness and death. They want to spend more money on killing while cutting benefits for the elderly. I challenge anyone to name one thing that benefits humanity in the "pro life" party.

It's time for Chuck to come out as an intelligent man of principle and reason, and decry these hateful remarks by his fellow Republicans. I'm not even asking for an endorsement of Obama here, though that would be nice. But it must disturb him, and other centrist Republicans, the level of venom being spewed by the right wing fringe lunatics that have taken over his party. He went to Iraq with Obama, he has worked with him many times. He may not completely agree with him, but these baseless attacks are growing more violent-sounding all the time. It's time for Chuck to stand up, like he did regarding the selection of Palin, and lead his party in denouncing McCain's campaign tactics.

Yes, yes, yes. Please stand up and shout, Chuck. The stuff coming out of the McSame campaign is absolutely ridiculous. Reminds me of 1939 propaganda in Germany. You would be the best, most credible voice from the Right.

Oh there are a select few people who will still want to be associated with McCain/Palin after the crap they'll be pulling in the coming weeks. Less and less for sure, but then again it could be anyone on that ticket running against Obama. There's a name for those people and it's not "republicans" well, i take that back...it kinda is....I mean really? You have people at a political rally in 2008, in the United States screaming "Kill Him"? I wonder why that is? I also wonder why they love Palin so much....
