RICHMOND, Va. — The wife of Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel plans to endorse Democrat Barack Obama.

Lilibet Hagel has scheduled a 10 a.m. news conference in Alexandria, Va., on Tuesday with Susan Eisenhower, the granddaughter of Republican President Eisenhower. Susan Eisenhower also is an Obama supporter.

Hagel, R-Neb., has made no endorsement. Lilibet Hagel said in an Associated Press interview that her decision was independent of her husband. She said she didn't know whether he would make an endorsement or whom he would support.

"You'd have to ask him," Lilibet Hagel said.

She said it will be her first endorsement of a Democrat and that perilous world conditions were a factor.

"The fact is we're in two wars, two of the longest we've ever been in. We've run up a third of our nation's debt in just the past eight years. We're in the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression," she said.

The Hagels know John and Cindy McCain, and she said her endorsement was not meant to slam them.

"This isn't anti-McCain. This is pro-Obama. I'm just convinced he's the right person," she said.

The Hagels vote in Nebraska, but they have lived in Washington's Virginia suburbs since Hagel won his first Senate term in 1996.

A moderate Republican and veteran wounded in combat in the Vietnam War, Hagel has been a fierce and credible critic of the Bush administration's Iraq policies. During the summer, he accompanied Obama and Democratic Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was briefly the object of speculation as a possible surprise Obama running mate selection.

Hagel has decided not to seek re-election, and will leave the Senate when his second term officially ends in January.

(This version CORRECTS Corrects that Susan Eisenhower is granddaughter, sted daughter of Eisenhower.)

I miss when Obama use to break out a big endorsement at a huge event the day after a major Hillary or Faux News attack. I'd love to see a Chuck Hagel endorsement in Omaha if any of these McBush/Putin attack have any legs in the coming weeks

Obama can still surprise us. Chuck Hagel and Colin Powell dual endorsements would really boost the foreign policy credentials of Obama. Here's hoping.

As an ex-republican, I am surprised that more republicans do not stand up and try and reclaim their party.. Then again, maybe just as I have decided to do, they will realize that the republican party is broken. The radical part of the republican party is very ugly and does not care about people. They enjoy their hateful smear tactics. My mouth always drops open when I hear them throwing around the notion that they are "Christians". I must have been going to the wrong church because I have always been taught that tolerance and compassion for all were important virtues.

I have not brought myself to become a democratic but as an independent I have no difficulty supporting Obama. I am so sick of the ugly smear tactics and think Palin is the worst representative of the female gender. There are so many smart women who could have been chosen by McCain but instead he finds a female that will say or do anything to help him get elected. Honor and integrity is no longer valued in the republican party. Rather, their motto is "the dirtier the better". This smear tactic may get them a few votes but with our world facing some of the worst economic times in years, the vast majority of voters wants a leader who takes this crisis seriously and who will rise above petty gamesmanship. Palin is a joke and McCain has lost my respect.

From all I've seen Senator Hagel is an honest man. Since Senator Hagel is leaving the Senate in Jan09, it would be a very good indictment of Bush-McCain if he would back Obama, too!

This better get at least as much coverage as Baroness Von Whatshername endorsing McCain.

De Rothschilds is her name and if she's related or married to a Rothschilds then read Huffington post about McCain's ties to Putin as are the Rothschilds would explain her sudden endorsement of McCain-it's all in the corruption.

McCain and Palin have turned to great divider. That's bad for the the country. Hope this gives the message that they will not be rewarded.

Wow! She's endorsing a Dem for the first time? That's major news and we are glad to have her support. Welcome aboard the winning train Mrs. Hagel! :-)

There are a few Republicans with integrity still in the public spotlight.
These are some of them.

Hagel is retiring because he doesnt want to come back and switch parties to run as a dem, but he also doesnt want to run as a Repub after the past 2 campaigns and now this disaster known as mccain.

Mrs. Hagel is not alone. More and more republicans will join her. I am happy to hear that she has chosen to publically announce her decision. The Palin/McCain ticket demonstrates everything that is wrong with the republican party. Palin/McCain think their ugly attacks are cute and clever. Palin turns my stomach.

The republicans will not discuss the economy because that would be standing up against all of their corporate and lobbyist friends. McCain is safe with his millions so why should he all of a sudden care about real people who will lose their savings and their jobs. He only cares about his rich friends and keeping his so-called Christian base. McCain has sold out. I hope he loses big. Now he is going to say that he has always fought for regulation ---------- please. The republican party needs a major wake up call. The game is over. Integrity, honesty and honor does matter.

The tide is turning for McCain..You can expect more prominent Republicans to come out so and endorse Obama (Hagel, Powell, and Lugar) to name a few..It’s over for McCain-Palin as this race is starting to sink to disgusting lows from the McCain campaign! Obama has promised to have a bipartisan Administration and I take him at his word. Chuck Hagel will probably be his SECDEF because of their close relationship..Dick Lugar? Prominent role in Foreign Policy…

Wow...first time in her life she is supporting a Democrat. I guess Susan Eisenhower isn't lying when she says that Obama is a once in a generation politician. I'm so excited about even the thought of Chuck Hagel serving in Obama's cabinet.

I applaud this woman. The phrase that "this is not anti-McCain, it's Pro-Obama" shows she is a very wise woman. Republicans, pay attention. This is how it should work. You should be able to make up your own minds independent of each other and based on what's good for the country. Thank you, Mrs. Hagel.

As a Republican supporter, this is the very last STRAW!! I will be a registered Independent (as should as I figure out what this party stands for) and I'm not supporting the Republican ticket, I'm voting for OBAMA/BIDEN.

If McCain has to ANNOUNCE that he is going super negative then he does not DESERVE to represent AMERICA!!

If the MSM does not talk about this comment regarding kill OBAMA, then saying this about a Black Man means nothing!!
