UPDATE: Radar reports that the Secret Service is investigating the potential threat against Barack Obama at a Sarah Palin rally:

The Secret Service is following up on media reports today that someone in the crowd at a McCain/Palin event suggested killing Barack Obama, according to Secret Service spokesman Malcolm Wiley. The shout of "kill him" followed a Sarah Palin rant on Obama's relationship with radical Chicagoan Bill Ayers.

Wiley says the Secret Service did not begin looking into the matter until press reports, namely Dana Milbank's article in the Washington Post, surfaced today, because no agents at the event heard anything. "The Secret Service did not hear any threatening statements directed at targets under its protection and no threatening statements were reported to us by law enforcement or citizens at the event," Wiley told Radar. Also unclear: whether the remark was directed at Obama or Ayers if the words were actually "kill" and "him."

In the latest instance of inflammatory outbursts at McCain-Palin rallies, a crowd member screamed "treason!" during an event on Tuesday after Sarah Palin accused Barack Obama of criticizing U.S. troops.

"[Obama] said, too, that our troops in Afghanistan are 'air raiding villages and killing civilians,'" Palin said, mischaracterizing a 2007 remark by Obama. "I hope Americans know that is not what our brave men and women in uniform are doing in Afghanistan. The U.S. military is fighting terrorism and protecting us and protecting our freedom."

Shortly afterward, a male member of the crowd in Jacksonville, Florida, yelled "treason!" loudly enough to be picked up by television microphones.

Here's the video:

John Aravosis at AmericaBlog wrote about a similar outburst yesterday:

McCain was speaking today in New Mexico, doing his usual personal attack on Barack Obama, as the stock market plummeted (you can see the ticker next to McCain on the screen, an apt reminder of what McCain and his fellow Republicans represent), and McCain asked the crowd "who is Barack Obama?" Immediately you hear someone yell "terrorist." McCain pauses, the audience laughs, and McCain continues on, not acknowledging, not chastising, not correcting. Oh, but McCain does say in the next sentence that he's upset about all the "angry barrage of insults."

Watch:

Marc Ambinder notes that the shouter advances McCain's Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright attacks, while Jonathan Martin suggested the campaign would need a third party to do it:

Judging by McCain's slightly startled reaction, he clearly didn't anticipate that reaction, and McCain's in no way responsible for the utterances of anybody in his audience. But he must have some idea of how deeply this fear/outsider/other meme has spread. A tripartite strategy isn't needed.

The Washington Post reported on a similar moment at a Palin rally on Monday:

"Now it turns out, one of his earliest supporters is a man named Bill Ayers," Palin said.

"Boooo!" said the crowd.

"And, according to the New York Times, he was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that, quote, 'launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and our U.S. Capitol,'" she continued.

"Boooo!" the crowd repeated.

"Kill him!" proposed one man in the audience.

And Dana Milbank highlights another incident from Monday:

Worse, Palin's routine attacks on the media have begun to spill into ugliness. In Clearwater, arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Palin then went on to blame Katie Couric's questions for her "less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media." At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African American sound man for a network and told him, "Sit down, boy."

"Getting ugly out there," says ABC's Jake Tapper.

American News Project went inside a pro-Palin rally set up by the McCain campaign to watch the vice presidential debate, where supporters booed moderator Gwen Ifill and laughed when Sen. Joe Biden got choked up talking about his first wife and daughter's deaths. Watch:

You people are crazy. This not a black or white issue nor dem. or reb.issue.It's an issue about who is best suited for for the job. When you go in to the hospital for surgury you want the best care possible not someone on the job barely a week.John McCain is a hero many times over who fought and almost died for our country.Barack Obama has shown nothing but hatred and contempt for our GREAT COUNTRY.

The Secret Service announced today that no one yelled "Kill him!" at the rally. There were more than 20 agents in the crowd along with dozens of state and local law enforcement officers. The only person who "heard" was the reporter who wrote the story. I know you HP'ers want it to be true. Sorry!! Now if you want to see real hate, look at the video of McCain supporters marching in New York in September. The O supporters where about as nice as the 4 people who wore "Palin is a c@nt" t-shirts.

If you want to see hatred, try this. Mount a big McCain/Palin sign on your car and drive around the south side of Chicago. Make sure you video the "responses" you get from the Obama supporters.

Woman at rally: I don't trust Obama. I have read about him and he's an Arab.

Sen. John McCain: No ma'am, no ma'am. He's a decent family man, citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues. That's what this campaign is all about. He's not, thank you.

Where is the video and the tape count where someone says, "kill him"?

Most likely doesn't exist. Just more false hype from the left.

Most likely. So hard to find other examples. Oh, wait, there are several clear examples of of unfounded hate speech by McCain supporters clearly recorded above on this page, and clearly audible and visible in every McCain or Palin ad available right now. You're blue all right.

Outrageous. Downright dangerous and I thought unethical. From all that I know about Lee County
Sheriff Mike Scott, located in Ft. Myers Florida, I'm assuming he's a city official, elected and UP for re-election. That he would come to a rally in full uniform with a gun and spout out the "Hussein" lie to make people believe (fear) that Barack is a Muslim, when in fact anyone can look up his old friends and classmates and confirm that Barack was born a Christian, raised one and is one. I always thought that people in MIKE SCOTT's position were not supposed to put themselves in compromising positions. But he has yet to be punished in any way, shape or form. I will write AND call his office and speak to Ft Myers internal affairs. Keep in mind emails are not kept private by Florida's law. This is the very state that was stolen from Al Gore--imagine if he had been president???

This morning I saw part of a recent McCain/Palin rally. Palin was throwing accusations of "unlimited abortions promised by Obama" to which the crowd responded with boos. This went on through other words by Obama taken out of context and skewed, each time met with more angry boos. There was something about this that seemed so familiar to me but I couldn't put my finger on it.

It was a short while later I realized what it reminded me of - the scene from "Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou?". The scene was a KKK rally in which they were ready to hang a black man.

This country has not progressed much in the last 200+ years in a very important way. Racially-rooted hated seems to be alive and well in America. While many Americans are embracing a poorly-spoken, hatemongering white woman like Palin (not much threat there), they are too ignorant and steeped in their old self-defeating ways to accept an intelligent, principled black man like Obama who could help us in rebuilding our position as a trusted and admired power in the world. I find it impossible to accept this as our legacy. It appears the decades of the "dumbing down of America" has been very effective. We are our own worst enemy.

McCain and Palin have embarked on anti-American rhetoric with respect to Mr. Obama.

Why don't Palin and McCain see that stoking fear and hatred, and allowing the type of dangerous outbursts in their rallies, is counterproductive for the U.S., as well as reflecting very negatively on them and their campaign? I've watched many heated elections, but never have I seen or heard the types of comments fueled, or allowed, by candidates at their rallies as they don't at theirs. By not calling out and correcting these hate-mongers at their rallies, they're encouraging them. I've often seen them smirk or grin with someone says something hateful and bigoted. What a terrible example they are not only to adults, but to children, watching.

IF THE MAIN STREAM MEDIA WOULD DO THEIR JOB PEOPLE WOULD NOT HAVE TO SHOW THEIR ANGER. DO YOUR JOB AND STOP HIDDING AND CENSORING THE TRUTH FROM THE AMERICAN PEOPLE

STOP complaining about the mainstream media. There is absolutely NOONE who produces information for the public that will not be tainted consciously or subconsciously by their own opinions and views, be it bloggers, White House press releases, or your hated "Mainstream Media."

It is YOUR job as a consumer of information to understand these biases, and to collect differing viewpoints to create a more complete view of the issues. It is NOT the news outlets' job to spoon feed you your own propaganda.

Bigotry, racism, hatred, fear are not appropriate ways for political rallies to show their "frustration" with the media and I don't think that's what it was. Palin and McCain had used words that they knew would illicit a strong response and their words did. Implying someone is a terrorist allowed all kinds of untruths to charge through the crowd. One woman thought Obama was an Arab (absolutely not) and a Muslim (he's ALWAYS been a Christian). Even if he had been an Arab or a Muslim though, the animosity toward Arabs and Muslims frightens me and I'm neither. I worry how we will accomplish peace in this world if all religions and all cultures seem so fearful of each other. That's part of why I support Obama. While we can't like dictators rule the world or genocide to prevail, we need to start with dialogue. I believe we need to protect our country and those in other countries with no voice. But we need to start with diplomacy, Looking at how McCain has behaved in this election, I don't see him as a diplomat or peacekeeper.

Well said, Sharon. And we won't stop talking about the truth about Obama. They will not silence us with trumped up political correctness like has worked so well in Europe.

The 2000 candidate McCain had my respect, but I now no longer feel I know him. You know, that one! The guy who was a pow, who used to vote his convictions.

This new McCain is tired, he seems so angry that this whippersnapper Obama actually won the nomination and could possibly win the presidency. So, we see race baiting, out right lies. and McCain smirking when audience members Palin has riled up scream "terrorist" referring to Obama.

So, now, we get Rove scare tactics, cue the spooky music. Make us afraid of the guy we'd almost forgotten was black. Being raised by family in Kansas just isn't American enough for McCain. Working his way through the best schools in the U.S.school without family legacy just isn't American enough. It could mean- terror of terrors, that Obama is smart. Really smart.

I realize we have gotten used to dumb presidents, fear mongering, being lied to about why we should go to war against a country that didn't attack us etc. And McCain sticks to this script.

He dumped the faithful wife for a young heiress with a family to fund a campaign! The lottery!

We all know the elegant Cindy McCain's middle name is "beer." So, while we struggle to keep a house , buy food, pay our bills, get health insurance, most of us will be drinking a lot of beer. It's a cheap drunk. The McCain's get even richer. You betcha. Sad.

This sicken me to the core that McCain and Palin is not stopping the spread hatred in their rallies. It is like a cancer, so reminsicent of the 60's race wars. If we are going to see anything come out of this election it is the proof that Republician will destroy this country. through their own greed. No man ,woman and child will feel comfortable in their skin because of the color if something happens to Barack Obama.

Is anyone else out there genuinely scared? I have been having nightmares lately and it's not over the state of the economy, but over the state of our country in general. I know that Presidential campaigns can get ugly at times, but this all seems to be cutting too deep and dividing us too much. The smart thing for me to do I suppose would be to stop watching, listening and interacting. It is truly affecting me in a negative way. I just have such strong feelings about bearing witness to history and feel that I should be strong enough and mature enough to handle it and make sense of it. I just can't seem to do that anymore. Does anyone have any words of wisdom? Please don't call me names or take your anger out on me for being weak minded. I am genuinely looking for some guidance.

Dear gynna,
Yes, I have been scared by all of this. I have also questioned if I have enough strength. I cope by gathering up enough strength for the day at hand and I leave tomorrow for tomorrow. I also look to the people from years past in our country's history who were just like us and had to find strength in their families, their communities and their spiritual beliefs. I also remember Anne Frank's words when she said that she still believed that people were basically good. Right now I am reading a book by Pema Chodron, an American Buddhist nun, who gives the advice that when you feel shaky to take a deep breath and visualize yourself inhaling the suffering of others and then exhaling good intentions and hopes for those suffering. This practice has help me greatly with feelings of anxiety about all of what is going on.

"America is, and forver shall be the shining city on a hill, the last great hope of mankind on Earth". I truely belive only one candidate in this election aspires to this lofty vision, and it is not the one of the same party as RR. We, as Americans, will prove to ourselves and the world that these words are more than words, they are our universal ideal. We WILL elect the man who will restore our standing in the world, and renew our hope and faith in the future of all humanity. This extends beyond any party or political philosophy. Liberal or conservtive, the most important thing for America today is to keep this vision alive.

Yes. She could have done something... instead of nothing. Sarah Palin could have showed leadership and toned down the crowd instead of standing there smirking as a fanatic yelled KILL HIM! KILL HIM!

Truly inspirational.

I amazes me how Repubs are so shocked they are on the verge of losing. Why? It's a change and a democratic year, the economy is in crisis. Did they just think a black guy would never win?

Kburlz, I am a republican and I am in no way "shocked" that we are on the verge of losing, because we aren't on the verge of losing. From what I can see, the election hasn't even taken place yet. And believe me, Senator Barrack Obama has his own crisis going on and it has nothing to do with the color of his skin, it has to do w/whom he choses to surround himself with. Chew on that one for awhile.

A letter to John McCain,

Mr. McCain, you have been weighed in the balances and your time is up. The decisions you have made regarding your campaign have been without regard to the American people. You have put yourself first and country last. Your once respected campaign rallies have now become hate rallies. You have allowed Sarah Palin to hi-jack your campaign rallies and turn them into forums for hate. This has opened the old wounds of racism and fear that continues to plaque the south. The south is one part of the country where you are above 50% in the polls. You nor your running mate are talking about real issues for the American people. The more you push division and hate you will be pushed down in the polls. The hands of God will not let you pass. The American people in this time of our history are not looking for messages filled with hate. Since you are not willing to take back the control you have given to Sarah Palin, you are heading for a political disaster that will be in the history books. Your time is up.
