ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Barack Obama said Monday that John McCain is trying to shift attention from the troubled economy because the issue is bad for the Republican presidential nominee's campaign.

The Democratic presidential candidate also implored federal officials to take swift action as Wall Street recorded another record one-day decline amid a global sell-off of stocks.

Obama told reporters in Asheville, N.C., that he was surprised his Republican rival's campaign would signal an effort to avoid talking about the financial turmoil because McCain advisers fear it could cause him to lose the election.

"I've got news for the McCain campaign: The American people are losing right now," he said. "They're losing their jobs. They're losing their health care. They're losing their homes. They're losing their savings. I cannot imagine anything more important to talk about."

An aide to McCain recently said the GOP campaign would like to shift the presidential race's focus away from the economy, which has been a better issue for Democrats than Republicans. Since then, McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin, has been questioning Obama's character based on his association with an incendiary pastor and a 1960s radical turned college professor.

Obama said he would keep talking about the economy and didn't answer questions about the associations McCain's campaign has questioned.

"The notion that we would want to brush that aside and engage in the usual political shenanigans and smear tactics that have come to characterize too many political campaigns is not what the American people are looking for," he said before stopping at a local barbecue joint for ribs and corn pudding. He's been in Asheville since Saturday preparing for Tuesday night's debate in neighboring Tennessee.

McCain continues to discuss economic conditions, but Obama says he needs to offer better and more specific remedies.

Obama renewed his call for extending unemployment insurance and for enacting a second stimulus package that would include tax cuts for millions of Americans. Congress has rejected those proposals in recent months.

He also urged Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke to move swiftly to restore confidence in the economy, noting that U.S. struggles were spreading across the globe. He said there was a great danger of the credit markets locking up _ the underlying problem that led Congress to pass a $700 billion relief package last week.

Noting sharp drops in financial markets around the world, Obama said, "It is a reminder that the rescue package that was passed last week is not the end. It's just the beginning."

Obama and McCain voted for the measure in the Senate, hoping it would enable the government to buy deeply devalued mortgage-backed securities to help banks find money to make loans.

Palin also addressed Monday's market slide at a fundraiser in Naples, Fla. "We need to cut taxes for businesses so they can hire more people -- that's how jobs are created. The other side just doesn't seem to understand that, especially in these times of economic woes," Palin said. "And today is not a good day. If you turn on the news tonight when you get home, you're gonna see that, ya, this is another woeful day in the market."

McCain Straps on his Depends; Ups his Geritol & decides to fight the smears...Accuses Economy of Bias!!!!!

The Republican presidential hopeful John McCain let his frustration with the US economy for torpedoing his campaign boil over today. When asked in an interview about the challenges his campaign faces, McCain responded, "Look, it's no secret that the economy favors my opponent." Asked to elaborate, he replied, "This country is in crisis. Now is the not the time to point fingers. But everybody knows that the economy caused this crisis, and I think everybody knows why it's doing it."

Separately, Steve Schmidt, who is the top strategist for the McCain campaign, called the economy a "pro-Obama institution..uh...organization...whatever, it's pro-Obama." He added,

This is an economy that is completely, totally, 150 percent in the tank for the Democratic candidate. Everything that happens to the economy should be evaluated by the American people from that perspective.

Challenged by reporters to defend the accusation, Schmidt continued:
snip
Asked why the economy might bear ill will towards the campaign, Schmidt answered, "I have no idea. Go ask the economy."

Actually, the attacks on Obama are intended to muddy the waters in anticipation of the outcome of the Troopergate investigation due Friday. Steve Branchflower is to determine whether Governor Palin abused her power in firing public safety commissioner Walt Monegan. Sometimes the best defence is obfuscation. Republicans are not stupid.

Obama is so smart for NOT responding to these attacks.

Politics 101: do not even say the NAME or reference the WORDS used by the other campaign to smear you. He's showing confidence by not addressing the attacks.

Kerry didn't understand this. Obama does. Stay on the high road, stay on the issues, and McCain will wind up looking like a fool. His campaign is a joke. He's deserpate. If he had picked a good VP and ran a decent campaign, it would be a LOT closer.

Everyone says "Obama should be way ahead" -- well, he kind of is, and second, we're electing the first African-American into the White House. This is history, and there are some closed-minds still yet to be changed.

MCCAIN AND PALIN SHOULD BE CHARGED WITH INCITEMENT

In some European countries (Britain for one) McCain and Palin would be charged with public incitement for calling Obama a terrorist or implying that he is one, that “he is not one of us” and suggestively using his middle name to imply that he is an Arab terrorist in disguise. During Palin’s public addresses in California and Florida someone in the crowd shouted that Obama is a “terrorist” and in Florida one person raised the issue of assassination. What better proof than this that McCain and Palin are inciting the crowd to harm Obama? The Secret Service and the Justice Department should take such public speeches more seriously. The question now is: Who is the real John McCain? Remember that McCain used to belong to an extremist organization that provided a forum for anti-Semites and racists. Secondly, why is McCain so angry—especially against Obama? There are so many who would hold McCain and rifle-packing Joe Six Pack responsible should anything ever happen to Obama!

They are sending Palin ONLY to Republican strongholds. They are not winning any democrat/independents and are probably losing many Republicans - so Sarah Palin is out there changing minds.

She'll never answer questions from real jounalists but if she would - she should be asked about her husband and her involvement with the AIP. Does she know we fought a war in which over 600,000 people died to keep this country together? I wouldn't think it was very patriotic to be 'palling' around with people who want to cause another such calamity!

I would have thought that the maverick would keep his honor and dignity in defeat but I guess not - he will go down and he will go down ugly. I only hope the good people of AZ are paying attention.

John McCain isn't misreading public sentiment. The fact that he and Sarah Palin so easily have embraced the low road is indicative of who he is. This is "How he rolls", as they say. The McCain / Palin campaign is a walking freak-show and everyone in America now has a front row seat.

G Gordon Liddy is a pal of McCain's - remember: he helped bring down the Nixon presidency with his little skullduggery kit. And Oliver North? And that Mr. Hensley person. Phil Gramm is still hanging around with McCain.

And I believe he has been on an airplane with that Alaska separatist, Todd Palin - whose wife used to be featured on youtube, giving her support for secession and the illegality of the Alaska statehood vote.

Interesting to see how well the McCain machine cleans up - though they may not be able to block the Troopergate report until after the election, which is what they are up to now that the Palin staff have been ordered by a judge to testify before the state legislature.

Erratic? He suspends his campaign to rescue America from the financial meltdown, but instead takes Joe Lieberman and their wives out to a pricey restaurant. Can we call that erratic?

Funny, I thought you all wanted to talk about the economy.

Well the republicans clearly refuse to. At this point we're just saying we're better on economy over and over again.

The Obama campaign ought to send out Joe Biden to comment on Palin's association with known traitor Todd Palin (a member of AIP), Palin's association with fringe religious groups, and Todd Palin's refusal to respond to a legal subpoena. Then there's McCain's opportunistic past dating back to his days at Annapolis: This might be hard for Biden to talk about since he's been close to McCain for 30 years but in a campaign like this the gloves come off. If McCain and Palin want to to run a dirt free campaign that would be fine but if they want to sling dirt then they need to be prepared to get dirt tossed right back at them and there is plenty of it for Obama and Biden to sling.

I'm just concerned that slinging mud is exactly what's worst about politics. Is it worth not only the loss in voter goodwill, but also the decline of morals that we're so concerned about the other candidate for?

I have some Very Good Advice for Sen.Obama & His Campaign: There's a Television Show that MANY Young & Middle-Age People watch, which a-alot of other People whom want to get a message across & to These People do short interviews--sit-downs on (it's a Tech & "Videogame" Show that's Pro-Obama)!!

The name of the show is: G4Tech: "Attack Of The Show."

If Sen.Obama really sees & has concern for the People whom Play Videogames and Sen.Obama wants them to see & know that They should & have to Vote on Election Day then G4Tech: "Attack Of The Show" would--could be the Perfect Television show for Sen.Obama to Project His Message on!

I love the fact that Sen. Obama is a calm, thoughtful, Presidential person...he doesn't need to respond to McCain's hysterics with anything but solid leadership. As for McCain and Palin, all they have left is 'smear, baby, smear' for the rest of the campaign.

Prediction: If Obama is elected, we will look on 6.1% unemployment, 6% interest rates, and a 10,000 Dow as the good old days. We will have 10 dollar gasoline and long lines to get it. I recall the Carter years.

Just how does Obama's plan differ from Carter's, Granholm's in Michigan, Schwarzenegger's in California, Corzine's in New Jersey? Huh?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:33 PM on 10/06/2008

I disagree. Our economy will be better. His plan for economic recovery is what the doctor ordered. Just by him getting elected markets will have a sense of comfort. Gas prices might go lower because the idea of the Iraqi war ending. And putting together an economic emergency package for the entire nation will help.

Its not a guarantee things will be better with Obama. But at least he has a plan while McCain only spews garbage and filth against Obama and has no plan whatsoever.
