A new SurveyUSA poll finds John McCain's chances of winning Virginia slipping away. Barack Obama is ahead in the state by ten points, 53% to 43%. The full results:

As McCain's Lead Among White Virginians Shrinks, So Too His Chances of Holding The State's 13 Electoral Votes: 29 days until votes are counted in Virginia, Democrat Barack Obama is ahead 53% to 43%, according to this SurveyUSA poll conducted exclusively for WDBJ-TV in Roanoke, WJLA-TV in Washington DC, WTVR-TV in Richmond, and WJHL-TV in the Tri-Cities. In 4 tracking polls conducted since the Republican Convention, McCain has gone from up by 2 to down by 10.

There is movement among men, where immediately after the GOP convention, McCain led by 10, and where today Obama leads by 11.

There is movement among whites, where McCain's once 22-point lead is today reduced to single digits.

There is movement among the well-to-do, where today for the first time Obama leads.

There is movement among pro-choice voters, where Obama's lead has doubled since August.

McCain no longer leads in any region of the state. In Northeastern VA, which includes the DC suburbs, Obama leads by 24 points. In Central Virginia, home of the Confederate White House, the Museum of the Confederacy and Appomattox, Obama today leads by 8. In Southeastern Virginia, Obama leads by 11. In the Shenandoah, where John McCain led by 24 points one month ago, Obama and McCain today tie.

Filtering: SurveyUSA interviewed 900 Virginia adults 10/04/08 and 10/05/08. Of the adults, 832 were registered to vote. Of the registered voters, 666 were determined by SurveyUSA to be likely voters in the 11/04/08 general election. Virginia has 13 Electoral College votes. George W. Bush carried Virginia by 8 points in both 2004 and 2000. Virginia last cast its Electoral College votes for a Democratic Presidential candidate in 1964, when Lyndon Johnson defeated Barry Goldwater.

A Suffolk Poll shows Obama with a similarly commanding lead in the state, 51% to 39%.

On OffTheBus, Diane Tucker reports that new voter registration in Virginia has far exceeded the Obama campaign's goals. The Politico adds that Virginia Republicans are warning McCain that he could lose the state, which has gone Republican in every presidential election since 1964.

Katherine Harris is no longer the Secretary of State. And, I have to disagree with your statement. I live in Florida and it will be a blue state!

The well established Cubans in Florida...were the elite of Cuba (the rich who oppressed the poor) who fled after the revolution and they brought the country's treasury with them (sound famiiar)....that's why they vote Republican.

Went door to door two weekends in a row in VA, and I concur that there is a lot of support out there. Not so many lawn signs, but undecideds who were our target were strongly in the camp.

This is great news. I'm not quite sold yet that VA will go blue, but a recent local news article showed record voter registration numbers and 42% of those are between 17-25 years old, a demographic that should be strongly for Obama.

My real concern is that people are saying they'll vote for Obama when asked, but when they get behind the curtain they won't be able to pull the lever for a black man.

That's out dated thinking on the so called "Bradley Effect" Go to this site and read the best pollsters analysis on that issue. http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/09/bad-math-and-bradley-effect.html

Also 17-25 year old's don't have much of old polarizing as those over 45 and above.

I know... I worry that the Republicans are answering that way when they are polled just to screw with the poll....

Thats why I don't trust polls... I just want to see the results on election night.... hopefully no voter tampering will be done!

this is great!!! i am sure that Obama also has a lead in Florida. I am a student at the University of Florida and if polls included college students (they do not because polls use landlines to call voters and college students don't have landlines) then Obama would be at least 5 points ahead in Florida!!!

Obama/Biden 08 landslide!!!

Its really great that Obama is steadily gaining on McCain. But at this point the greatest danger is that the Obama campaign and/or his followers get overconfident. Things can turn against one very quickly and unexpectedly.

Obama has to relentlessly keep the pressure on McCain and keep increasing his margins in the states he is winning and gain a majority in additional states.

Obama and his supporters have to run scared until the final electoral votes are in. Those of us who can afford it, need to send the campaign another contribution. Those who can spare time have to keep volunteering.

This is the most crucial election since Roosevelt against Hoover in 1932. Imagine what horrible things would have happened if Hoover had won the 1932 election.

I'm not too terribly worried after seeing him sink so many three-pointers. But still: you have to run like you're behind. Any seasoned pro can tell you that.

As a resident of the Commonwealth of VA, for the third time in my adult life I am proud of my backwaters state! The first time was when Doug Wilder was elected Governor [he's black]. The second time was when voters of VA soundly rejected George Allen for his "macaca" statement. And now...this. Who knew that a slave-owning state would [in recent memory] soundly REJECT all forms of racism and EMBRACE the new reality. That same reality that spawned so many of our founding fathers, who stated that all men were equal.

Virginia, thank you once again for showing the world that we still have the same spirit as our founding fathers!!!

If this can happen in VA, it can happen in other states. And it shows me that the American people are indeed NOT stupid and gullible. That we can and we will change things....that we recognize our place in the world...that we strive to make it a better world.

SHAME on you repubs! Esp. of the neocon variety...

GO OBAMA!

I can barely contain myself. I am absolutely livid. The lies, smearing and innuendo should speak loud and clear on their feeling of desperation at the JM camp.

He's bad enough but when I see her I just cringe. She reminds of a know-nothing parrot with that fake folksy charade. Pathetic.

Now it's time for the gloves to come off and hit them hard. They're hoping to swiftboat again but WE WILL NOT LET IT HAPPEN!!!

If I were McCain I would GO TO THE HEARTLAND to campaign!

If Not he will DO A "1964 GOLDWATER!", a "WAR LOVING ARIZONA SENATOR"

In 1964 Goldwater had only 52 Electoral Votes!

Lets Vote all the Repubs OUT so we can Make America Great Again with "FAIR MARKETS" like we had for almost 70 years from 1931 to 2000!

This Like the Keating 5 SHOULD NEVER EVER HAPPEN AGAIN!

Missouri 10/5, 1,000 LV 3%
Obama 50, McCain 47, Barr 1, Nader 1, McKinney 0

Also, everyone....please pick up more signs and plaster them all over the neighborhood! I have seen too few signs of Obama in Northern VA, where I live. PICK UP MORE SIGNS AND PUT THEM EVERYWHERE!!! DO NOT TAKE THINGS FOR GRANTED.

This is the 1964 Election all over again!

War Loving Arizona Republican, Goldwater, got only 52 Electoral Votes!

GONE FOR REPUBS: Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Minnesota, Colorado, Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Michigan

NEXT: Georgia, Montana, Mississippi, and possibly Texas and Kentucky

To be fair, I don't think Goldwater was "war loving", he was an isolationist republican and before he died he expressed outright disdain for the neocons.
