Palin Calls Afghanistan "Our Neighboring Country"

Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin called Afghanistan "our neighboring country" on Sunday in a speech that could revive questions over her tendency to stumble into linguistic knots.

Three days after a mostly gaffe-free debate performance, the Alaska governor fumbled during a speech in which she praised U.S. soldiers for "fighting terrorism and protecting us and our democratic values".

The Republican party is so much in the grip of ideology that correct belief on a few bullet points is more important than accomplishments or talent. Palin reminds me of a Russian bumpkin who wants to become a high-level party apparatchik, but utters endless malapropisms when trying to repeat the party line.

For example, in affirming the obnoxious doctrine of American exceptionalism, she comes off sounding like Borat: "We see America as a force for exceptiona­lism..." Right words, but not idiomatic in the least.
