NEW YORK — At 19, Rachel Maddow shared a house with friends in Philadelphia and wasn't paying much attention to the 1992 Republican National Convention on television until Pat Buchanan took to the podium.

She was transfixed. Buchanan's combative conservative speech, which denounced gay rights, was a milestone for people on two sides of a political divide. Either a call to arms or intolerant, depending on your point of view, it couldn't be ignored.

"Pat's culture war speech at the Republican convention hit me right between the eyes," said Maddow, MSNBC's new star and a lesbian. "He was, without euphemism, declaring that my own country was at war with me. I get it intellectually and strategically now, but at 19, I only got it emotionally."

So there's a certain irony that Maddow and Buchanan have a prime-time date many nights now on television.

"It's Pat" is a semi-regular feature on "The Rachel Maddow Show," a program that has surprised even the people who put it on with its success after only a month on the air.

Maddow is a regular on the liberal "Air America" radio network and had appeared frequently on MSNBC, particular on Keith Olbermann's "Countdown." She was given the 9 p.m. EST slot when network executives judged Dan Abrams' show a failure.

Its second week on the air, Maddow's audience was bigger than CNN's "Larry King Live." King won the third week and the two are settling into what promises to be a competitive battle behind Fox News Channel's dominant "Hannity & Colmes." During the week of Sept. 22, Fox's show averaged 3.2 million, CNN had 2.1 million and Maddow was at 1.7 million.

She has more than doubled the audience that MSNBC had been getting in the time slot, according to Nielsen Media Research, and is keeping much of the audience that watches Olbermann.

Naysayers told MSNBC chief executive Phil Griffin that Maddow would be too much like Olbermann, and there was a risk in turning his prime-time lineup completely over to one political point of view.

Instead, Maddow is something of a happy warrior compared to Olbermann's increasingly dark prince. The Rhodes Scholar can lap almost anyone intellectually without making you hate her for doing it.

"She's likeable," Griffin said. "She smiles, she has fun. She's interesting."

If Olbermann's show has a drumbeat that drives it, Maddow's "got a little bit of a symphony," he said.

She also doesn't back down from a fight. Olbermann's "Countdown" is well-written and meticulous, but he relies on guests who rarely disagree with him.

Maddow frequently brings on guests to argue with her, none more so than Buchanan.

He can exasperate her, and vice versa. To date, it hasn't become nasty.

To a certain extent, Maddow credits Buchanan with giving her television career a push. A few years ago when Buchanan hosted a show at MSNBC, he remembered her and sought her out for work.

"I like debating things with Pat," Maddow said. "He's funny and quick and intellectually coherent, even when his views are totally toxic."

Thinking back to the culture war speech, Maddow sees how one of Buchanan's contribution to Nixon-era politics was the idea of "positive polarization," or dividing the country against itself and siding politically with the bigger half.

Buchanan, by e-mail, said that "Rachel and I get along fine," but didn't elaborate since he prefers not to participate in feature stories about MSNBC shows. He's a paid MSNBC contributor, but the cable network has become particularly noxious to Republicans, mostly because of Olbermann.

Griffin said he liked how Maddow and Buchanan played off each other during MSNBC's primary coverage in the spring. "They're 180 degrees apart but they like each other," he said.

Maddow is still juggling several ideas around, even with the fast start.

"Every segment, every minute of the show is still a work in progress," she said. "We're still trying to figure out what works best on air, what we're capable of producing well, what's fun. I expect that if we're lucky enough to still be on the air in a year, the show will look very different than it does now."

Her show completes the transformation of MSNBC, in prime-time, into a politically liberal network ("Countdown" and "The Rachel Maddow Show" repeat in another two-hour block at 10 p.m. EST). That has caused some consternation at NBC News, where some feel that MSNBC has damaged the network's reputation for impartiality. NBC was targeted for angry chants at the GOP convention, and John McCain's campaign pointedly snubbed Brian Williams in giving Sarah Palin interviews to Charles Gibson of ABC and Katie Couric of CBS.

Griffin feels the ratings prove that on cable, shows with a strong point of view have the best chance of success.

A board hanging in Maddow's NBC office is filled with scribbles, mostly indecipherable, of potential topics for her shows. It's still so new that the nameplate outside is blank.

"I still haven't really figured out when I'm supposed to be where, and how to make sure there's time in every day to do things like eat and sleep and read my e-mail," she said.

A few months ago I went to the emergency room with a heart arrhythmia that occurred while I was watching Pat. I ended up having a cardiac ablation procedure not long after that so maybe I owe my life to Pat. I'm still voting for Obama, though.

Not so funny you had to go to the emergency room, but glad you're here to write about it.

I could hardly stand to look at Pat Buchanan, let alone listen to him, until very recently. Somehow Rachel Maddow humanized him in a way I preciously thought impossible. They really look as though they like each other, although one would dearly love to deprive the other of her rights. Pat must really have some sort of mental disconnect going on in his head - probably akin to Cheney's - to allow a friendship with whom he'd probably consider a mortal enemy.

Now whenever I see him on TV (usually on Rachel's show), my husband and I always go, "It's Pat!" as though we were small kids excited to see Raffi on Sesame Street. I don't get it!

I love the Rachel and Pat segments. It's like Hannity and Colmes for smart people. Pat certainly gets a lot more respect from Rachel than Colmes has ever gotten.

Why all the pretty women have to be lesbians. I wouldn't mind going out with Rachel Maddow. I don't hate gays, I'm just thankful that I'm not one.

Love your show, Rachel, but when you have Pat Buchanan on could you please ask him to quit yelling at the camera? If he could quit flailing his arms, that would be nice as well. He sure has a bad demeanor.

I am continually surprised at how out of touch Pat Buchanon is with the financial life of Americans, recently he described the " working class " as people who make 40 - 50 K per year .there are policeman and county workers and teachers who dont make that much and how many jobs do you see for listed for $25 an hour , where does he think all of these $7 and $8-$10 dollar an hour jobs go?Mr Buchannon also thinks that people making 80k -100k a year don't need a tax break, BUT he wants them at $500 -$600 per week to have 2 cars from detroit , a mortgage, day care and gasoline and he wants them to support the travel tourism industry and charities and investments, He is budgeting from 1972!

I get very upset everytime I see Pat Buchanan, his views drives me crazy. So Rachel as much as I love to see you and hear your views, you leave me no choice but to keep on doing what I have always done, change the channel to CNN.

I love seeing 2 people who clearly disagree show respect for the other person and ther views. I am constantly being tailgated, flipped the bird, and honked at the having the audacity to sport an Obama bumper sticker in Alaska. All of us, whether we support Obama, McCain, or Ron Paul, for that matter, want what is best for our country and it's people. We have different ideas about how that achieve that goal but I see no reason to be nasty about it. When I see a McCain sticker, I know that there goes someone who cares about our country. I hope in November there are more people with my opinion than theirs but I'm glad they care enough to have one.

On top of being smart and quick on her feet, she has one of the most infectious smiles and laughs I have ever seen on TV. I am so glad she is there. Pat Buchanan is a blowhard conservative nothing anymore...but at least she keeps it more or less civil. He would not. And she is gutsy to bring on this baffoon. On occasion I expect he will say something that is fair and balanced. Oops...that is another outlet, isn't it.

I love watching Maddow and Buchanan going at it - talk about opposite ends of the political spectrum - they really do seem to enjoy their verbal jousts without reverting to "talking points" too much. If we had more of this type of talking - we might actually be better informed.

NBC's "reputation" for impartiality? Is that a joke or something? NBC along w/all the other major networks are hardly impartial and if anyone beside the deluded execs or so-called reporters at these conglomerates think they're impartial has been living under a (30)rock.
Where was the impartiality leading up to the Iraq war? I believe this because, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see how these networks get huge filthy lucre from advertising revenues i.e. Republican's/Demcrats especially in an election cycle. If anyone out there thinks that the bottom line, again lucre, doesn't come first is again living under a rock. Think of all the money these networks and their affiliates make during an election cycle. Hundreds of millions. I think, according to the owners and execs it trumps any reputation these networks deem themselves to have.
In other words, they are in collusion editorially, by the owners/execs and the so-called overpaid talking heads who love to hear and see themselves like the narcissists they are which brings be to Tom Brokaw. He should NOT be alowed to moderate the debates whatsoever. He is biased and should be questioned as to his motives for meeting w/the mcCain people before the debates. Somethings rotten in Denmark I tell you as you'll see tomorrow night.

Rachel Maddow is great. But the pairing with Pat Buchanan is part of what is wrong with the MSM--first is that serious matters are reduced to show biz 'debates", the second is that it is all a game, like Carville v. Matalin, third, it plays into the equally valid point-of-view idea (if against slavery, must also have a pro-slavery spokesperson) and finally, it gives that right-wing. hate-monger (albeit a clever and smart one) a needless forum for his toxic views.

Excellent points. I agree completely. Rachel is fair and serious, and her qualifications outweigh all the pundits combined.

Hi Everyone;

I was a gay Republican until Pat Buchanan's 1992 speech. I shared Rachel's feeling that my country had just declared war on me for something I had no control over.

I have hated the hypocrisy of the GOP ever since and have done my best to help Dems get elected whenever possible.

Keep up the good work, Rachel!

Best,

I wish Rachel would moderate the debate tomorrow instead of Brokaw. And why not Meet the Press, too? I guarantee Washington would shape up fast. Seriously I hope the MSM is paying attention to her and Amy Goodman and realizing it's time to put their tired old courtiers out to pasture.

I've been guessing his open criticism of the Iraq war and a lot of other Bush military blunders is the reason you'll never see him on Fox news. We do not see things same on the domestic issues, but Buchanan's foreign policy writings the last couple years are some of the best I've read.

I can't stand his or his sisters voice. Its like screeching train brakes. I don't agree with most of his political or social views. However, I have read some of his writings and see him having a higher than average intellect (although getting fuzzy with age). I suspect Rachel Maddows own intellect likes to be challenged. Which in my opinion makes for the most interesting people.

I think one of the most uninteresting people on television is Oreilly. He can not stand to be challenged - in any shape or form.
