Brigitte Bardot

French film legend-turned-activist Brigitte Bardot took a swipe at Sarah Palin on Tuesday, saying the US vice presidential candidate was a disgrace to women.

"I hope you lose these elections because that would be a victory for the world," Bardot wrote in an open letter to Republican John McCain's running mate in the November vote.

"By denying the responsibility of man in global warming, by advocating gun rights and making statements that are disconcertingly stupid, you are a disgrace to women and you alone represent a terrible threat, a true environmental catastrophe," wrote Bardot.

The screen icon from the 1960s, who now heads an animal rights foundation, went on to assail Palin for supporting Arctic oil exploration that could jeopardize delicate animal habitats and for dismissing measures to protect polar bears.

"This shows your total lack of responsibility, your inability to protect or simply respect animal life," Bardot wrote.

In a final salvo against Palin, the 74-year-old ex-star picked up on Palin's depiction of herself as a pitbull wearing lipstick and said she "implored" her not to compare herself to dogs.

"I know them well and I can assure you that no pitbull, no dog, nor any other animal for that matter is as dangerous as you are," Bardot wrote.

For every woman who supports Palin because "she's like me" there is a husband who will vote for Obama because he has to live with that woman every day.

Right on to "Briggy" for her points! I'm not one to personally attack Palin, but I don't see Palin as a prototype feminist--one who exemplifies and set forth a strong pro-female agenda. I don't see her as a protector of animals and their rights, nor as a leader who responds to the needs of the ecoenvironment. She practically has no understanding of the sensitive balances of the world ecosystem in which we live and she does not even care. I think what did it for me folks in regards to Palin was when I learned of the maltreatment of Native peoples of her state. Palin stripped different tribal groups of their rights to traditional fishing and hunting (traditions they have maintained for thousands of years) so that her husband Todd could expand his own commericial fishing industry. She legally challenged different tribes as sovereign nations, threatened the use of their traditional languages, etc. There are a number of court issues where Palin has been involved regarding these issues. I've read about through a number of sources including an article written by a Native writer at Op-ED. Palin is NOT good for animals, the environment, human beings who are different from herself, nor the planet period.

Is this all you have to contribute to the discussion. Pathetic.

Yeah! OMG! Weren't they the ones who made it possible for the American Revolution to finally succeed? What the heck! We right-wingers can hate anyone we want!!

Well aren't you such a shining light of inspiration.
Why do you hate the French? And why do some Americans take such offense at a different world view?
Europe has been around and screwed up with empire longer that America, seems we should take note and learn from how well imperial ambitions turn out!

Why are my posts being blocked? I expressed my concerns in very civil terms. There's nothing offensive in pointing out my bewilderment with the fact that a member of the French Loony Right suddenly becomes a darling of the American left.

You know you're in trouble when you can make Brigitte Bardot look good. Wasn't she in on some ugly French nationalism lately? Can't recall.

Yes she was, and she was still far to the left of Sarah McPalin.

Brigitte Bardot focuses on animal rights because they are innocent victims of our political abuses.
Sarah Palin focuses on the gun sights because she sees man/woman as the supreme animal.
Somewhere between supremacists, creationists and dominionists on this planet, there are people who care for all life, the poor whose habitat is still shrinking, fauna and flora included.
Alaska's natives could tell of the ravages perpetrated by careless land use, climate change and oil drilling. This is the future we can expect if the circus comes to (white Washing-town).

Three cheers for Brigitte Bardot! I couldn't agree with her more. The fact that Palin is anatomically a female doesn't give her a free pass. Women and men should voice their opinions regarding any politician whom they deem unfit. Most people I know, even those who like McCain, think that Palin is an absolute buffoon.

Bardot is my new hero....

"Environmental disaster" and "... no pitbull, no dog, nor any other animal for that matter is as dangerous as you are," are classic and right on. Palin and Americans like her are a menace.

You know you've screwed up when you get a reaction out of the great Brigette Bardot. I wish more women would speak out against Palin, she is completely unqualified to be our VP and McCain should be thrown out of the senate. McCain has humiliated our great nation by choosing her.

"A woman degrading another woman who's competing in a man's world is a disgrace.
I guess women's lib only applies to successes for women in the same political party" reads a prior post.

What is an unconscionable disgrace is supporting a woman simply because she is a woman.
Thinking women, especially those in the workforce back in the day, would never wink and mug during what amounts to a job interview for a prestigious position. Most women celebrate life on a level that is more than a slogan: working for peace, caring for the environment and animals and nurturing their children. Bardot is correct Palin is a disgrace and quite the antithesis of a true feminist.

By the way there are many intelligent, articulate Republican women that would have made impressive running mates for McCain. I cannot imagine that any of these accomplished women would have stooped to Palin's shoddy tactics and hate mongering.
