Experts: Palin Owes $25,000 In Back Taxes

Several tax experts said they believe Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin is required to pay federal taxes on $25,000 in reimbursements from the state of Alaska for her children's travel expenses.

The Alaska governor released her 2006 and 2007 tax returns on Friday, sparking a lively debate on tax blogs and among tax professionals over whether reimbursements and per-diem meal payments from the state should be subject to federal taxes. Since taking office in December 2006, Gov. Palin, whose state salary is $125,000 a year, received reimbursements totaling $43,500 for travel and lodging for her family in connection with state business. Of that total, $25,000 was for her children's travel and the rest was for her husband, Todd, the Washington Post reported.

This is just another entry in the long list of transgressions that would have buried the Obama campaign if he was the perpetrator, but somehow it gets overlooked or forgiven because it is done by McCain-Palin.

John McCain's false statement on 60 Minutes less than 3 weeks ago that his campaign manager Rick Davis had no involvement with mortgage giant Freddie Mac should have gotten more media coverage than Palin's self-proclaimed foreign policy experience.

How can America expect reform from a McCain administration that is being run by the lobbyists that enabled this financial disaster in the first place?

Had it been Obama making such a false comment on one of the most revered news magazine shows in the country, it would have ended his quest for the Presidency right then and there. But John McCain marches on.

Imagine if the Obama family owed back property taxes, as Cindy McCain did this summer, or if Joe Biden owed $25k in income taxes as Sarah Palin does. How would it be treated in the media?

i cannot imagine why either the state of alaska or a family with the financial holdings of the palins use H&R as their tax preparer. of course, this absolves them of criminal liability, but it is naive and certainly not the most prudent method of tax preparation. good cpa's cost as much as good lawyers and are worth every penny. it's their job.

Sorry actually it was Sen. Joe Biden who rightly said it is "Patriotic to pay taxes".

When he said that, the Repuglicans lost their f'ing minds. Palin was mocking Sen. Biden. But what he said is true and correct. It is patriotic to pay taxes, after all what do the Repubs think pays the salaries of our Armed Forces? The payroll fairy-godmother?

The reason this country is currently in the red with massive deficits is because adequate taxes were not collected and GWB borrowed money to run the Govt. from China and other places.

Benjamin Franklin said it best when he said "the only things in life that are certain are death and taxes." Apparently, using today's assessments, Franklin must have been a Democrat!
