Smearing Obama With Ayers "Nonsensical," Former Illinois GOP Rep. Says

Embedded within a comprehensive Monday report from NPR on Barack Obama's history with William Ayers, there is an interesting bit of straight talk from a former Republican who served in the state legislature.

Discussing Ayers' rehabilitation as a member in good standing of the education policy-wonk community, former state Republican Rep. Diana Nelson said: "It was never a concern by any of us in the Chicago school reform movement that he had led a fugitive life years earlier ... It's ridiculous. There is no reason at all to smear Barack Obama with this association. It's nonsensical, and it just makes me crazy. It's so silly."

NPR also quotes Nelson as saying that when Republicans "snort" at Ayers in Illinois, it's because "he comes from a wealthy family, they know he became a radical activist early in his life ... but beyond just snorting, I don't think anyone gives it another thought."

The 60's were a different time and there were alot of irate people who thought Vietnam was a senseless war & were very vocal about it & yes did stupid things! Unlike today where there are very few Americans who are this vocal. These kids didn't wait until they lost a family member or friend to the war to vocalize their views & act against it!

Times change, and so do people, and to drag this Professor's name through the mud 40 years later for political gain is reprehensible! He has atoned for what he did and has turned his life into a positive for this nation.

The Ayers bit, paradoxically, shows how ultra-clearn Obama is. After over a year of the most intense opposition research possible from both the Clintons and McCain, Ayers (and, of course, Wright) are all McCain can up with. Pitiful, and all but the know-nothings who are so bitter they don't even have the brains to notice how the Republicans have destroyed them economically, and killed and maimed their kids in Iraq for dessert, know it. I don't necessarily think it's the media's job,although right now they're the only ones who can do it. I think there should be some sort of oversight committee, an offshoot of FEC if necessary, and there should be penalties of some sort...fin­es, sanctions, penalties.
