McCain touts the economic prowess of, and suggests as a future Treasury Secretary Meg Whitman, the former CEO of eBay and someone who he has turned to for economic advice in the past. Normally, this is a solid point for McCain to press, highlighting entrepreneurship and the growth of female business leaders. The problem: eBay just announced that it was firing 10 percent of its work force.

I started laughing out loud when he mentioned her name. His advisors must have bit through their tongues on that one.

His timing seems to be working out like that. Some of his ponderings are starting to sound like Yule Brenner's King of Siam. What stands out is that he has to preface virtually every remark with a snotty aside about Sen Obama. Even the "McCain Doctrine" started out with a swift kick in Sen Obama's direction. WAY too reactive to be president. Under this fact pattern he will have to stand there and pick on everybody. Sheesh.
