The New York Times' Web site is getting more global, and IHT.com is going bye-bye.

The Times told staff in an internal e-mail Tuesday that the paper's flagship Web site will soon become host to news from sister paper the International Herald Tribune and that the Tribune's site will be shuttered. The move will require "hard decisions about jobs at the IHT," and the company is now looking to "reassign or relocate people," according to the memo.

In an interview Tuesday, NYTimes.com General Manager Vivian Schiller insisted that "it's absolutely, positively not about cost savings." Rather, it's about growth, she said.

Schiller hopes tying the sites together will increase the Times' traffic--and, significantly for an Internet news business, give it more content against which to sell ads. Schiller also says the move will let the paper better capitalize on the roughly 18% to 20% of traffic coming from foreigners by selling more ads for them.

Well.. that sucks. And here I was just having discovered that the IHT has a good searchable online archive of articles that you don't have to pay for.

But without the IHT website, how the hell is Drudge report now going to link to two dozen New York Times articles per week, without revealing to his moronic conservative base that the grey lady actually is the paper of record of the United States. So much so that half his feed come from it. Up to now, he's been linking to the same article as it appears on IHT.com.

Didn't the Sulzbergers put Mike Golden in charge of the IHT? This is pretty much par for the course in Mikey's career. Clearly not the brightest bulb on the tree, but a "loyal" family member. I hope someone buys them before they have to start yard sales to bail themselves out.

I thought IHT provided very good international content, but I did not think it was on par with NYT. Interestingly, I never connected the two. I always wondered why conservatives criticized the NYT even when I was a Republican. It is a national treasure in light of the journalistic decline of the WSJ.

I love the IHT. I don't mind them taking down the web page, but I sure hope I'll be able to pick up a copy of the rag when I'm abroad.

As long as they do not let William Kristol have any input; I would hate to wake up to find out that what was left of IHT had switched its editorial position to "Truth is mutable, and no facts are irrefutable.".

(An acknowledgement is due to Jason Linkins for his story on Fox's William La Jeunesse here on HuffPo today.)

I loved the International Herald Tribune...when it was the old Herald Tribune in NY, it was a wonderful counter to the Times as a liberal paper....another great institution bites the dust.
