I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Obama

The insta-polls, which provide viewers with a somewhat skewed but important insight into how each candidate fared say, by and large, that Obama scored a victory in the second debate.

NBC's focus group of undecided Pennsylvania voters had the Illinois Democrat winning by roughly a 60-40 split. Frank Luntz's focus group, over at Fox, showed undecided voters leaning towards Obama because of his position on health care. CBS's focus group of independents had the Democratic nominee winning the debate at 39 percent to McCain's 27 percent, with 35 percent of the respondents saying it was a tie. Greenberg Quinlan Rosner, a Democratic polling firm, had a focus group of undecideds leaning to Obama by a margin of 42 percent to 24 percent.

Meanwhile, SurveyUSA interviewed 741 debate watchers in the state of Washington, 54 percent of whom thought Obama was the "clear winner" compared with McCain's 29 percent. That same polling firm had the first debate as a tie. In tonight's survey: 42 percent of respondents said McCain was too forceful.

And the CNN focus group of undecided voters in Ohio had the margin at an even wider spread: Obama 54 percent to McCain's 30.

A look at some of the specific issues that these Ohio voters valued suggest that they prefer the candidate who, at least on the surface, appears less on the attack. When Obama discussed health care as a right for all Americans, his numbers were through the roof. At one point, female respondents were dialing in at 100 percent approval. When he talked about using diplomacy in Darfur and pursuing Bin Laden in Pakistan, he again enjoyed strongly enthusiastic responses.

McCain had his moments too, mostly when he was discussing economic matters and propping up businesses to turn around the economy. His low points came when he was on the attack. On MSNBC, Nora O'Donnell charted how independent voters and Democrats soured on McCain when he said that figuring out Obama's tax policy was like nailing Jell-O to a wall.

How solid was the consensus that Obama scored better tonight? Even Bill Bennett, ever the Republican optimist, conceded that the Illinois Democrat scored higher marks.

"I confess I so much admire McCain, but I just don't think the campaign is equal to the story,' he said. "I just don't think it's equal to the man, it hasn't been. ... We needed a breakthrough, talking about the economy. I think he was a little better than last time, but he didn't break through enough, and he's behind. So it just wasn't good enough for McCain in terms of what it had to be."

BTW, what was with the remarks about being on the lookout for Ukraine, McCain kept bringing up during the foreign policy discussion? Does he have a lobbyist working for Ukraine that can stir up trouble like the one that works for Georgia?

More then likely he does.

He brought up Ukraine in the last debate, another Georgia perhaps?

McCain, your stuff is all in vain, did you notice how he treats the african americans, specifically how he treated the person who was an african american in the crowd ? Also, did you notice how he did not shake hands with "that one", when "that one" tried to do so, but ended up shaking hands with "that wife" cindy.

McCain is a punk. Clear and simple that is just some mess. He really believe that Obama is beneath him. He really believe that Obama should not be on that stage with him. That is what and how he really feels.

The great nthing about these polls. The people who will elect the next president most often can't even work a simple computer on e-mail to the kids. they sure don't know how to text on a cell phone, if they even have one.

I think the "that one" comment came from the first SNL skit with "Sarah Palin" and "Hillary Clinton," when "Hillary" pointed at "Sarah" and said as an aside, "Ask that one about dinosaurs." I think it was one of his many failed attempts at humor last night. Just a thought.

You've got a point there and he was trying REALLY hard to put out some jokes.

It is often very hard to malke a joke when there is one standing beside you.

We often use humor when we are nervous or upset. I think McCain was both of those things last night. He was also hoping to diffuse the grumpy old man image he is building up by trying to act like a fun guy with a sense of humor. I suspect that the comment he made about needing something to control his hair loss was his attempt to portray himself as someone who can joke about that sort of thing, rather than the guy the Rolling Stone called to the table for calling his wife an awful name when she pointed out his bald spot in public. Granted, it is unfair and just a bad idea to criticize your spouse about anything in public, but she did not deserve to be called that. In public or otherwise.

Just not funny to joke about hair loss when people are being denied insurance and medical treatment for cancer and their hair is falling out from chemo therapy. Do you see now why that fell flat?

No one won whatever that was on TV last night.

I agree with what this analyst wrote:

With the country at one of its most interesting—not to mention terrifying—moments in a generation, John McCain and Barack Obama met in Nashville for what was surely one of the dullest and was definitely the least satisfying presidential debate in memory.

There have been boring debates before, of course. Truth be told, probably only a fraction of these encounters over 32 years since general election debates became a fixture of presidential campaigns actually delivered on their promise of great political drama. And even interesting debates are inevitably somewhat stilted affairs, as candidates cleave to their scripts and try to avoid self-inflicted blunders.

But the Belmont University showdown was something entirely different. Place the gravity of the moment next to the blah-blah-blah artifice of the rhetoric and overall insubstantiality of the evening and this is what you get: The worst presidential debate ever.

If Obaaaa ma had said anything which I haden't heard in his numerious high dollar cable channel Paid advertising I might have been mildly interesting. The only High Point was McCain's plan for recovery. At least he has an iIdea.

"I might have been mildly interesting" Hmmm...Nope you are not one bit interesting at all...Just what was McCains "plan"? I bet you don't have an answer...why? Because neither did McCain.

If you don't know the candidates' positions by now, for God's sake, don't vote, you idiots. It's boring because McCain has nothing to add, no ideas, and Obama isn't going to blow his lead by doing something "mavericky." Why should he?

Not that we're gam blers here in Arizona, but if you play bee es bingo during the next debate, make sure everyone writes DIFFERENT words on their cards before you start. Otherwise, some smarty will win in like 23 nanoseconds by writing "my friends" in every square.

Yep. He knows she's horrible. And he knows that bringing up Palin is not going to arouse Independents. He wants to look bipartisan by mentioning Lieberman, but come on even Democrats don't even want to be associated with him.

He also knows she is hogging the spotlight. He created a monster and he doesn't know what to do about her. The MI Republicans are contacting her to come back as if she were the head of the party. And he thought he was pulling a fast one on the American public. I'm sure he's had more than one WTF moment that had nothing to do with "That One".

LIEberman was the one McSame realy wanted for VP. Steve Schmidt and the other NEOcons forced the poor old guy to choose Palin. Shouldn't they be charged for elder abuse??? LIEberman is trolling around spreading propaganda for McSame in the hopes of getting a place in his administration. I bet he is sorry now for leaving the Democratic Party! To think this deceitful opportunist ran as vp candidate with the great Al Gore. He probably helped Bush to steal the election!
