Brooks Goldberg

David Brooks spoke frankly about the presidential and vice presidential candidates Monday afternoon, calling Sarah Palin a "fatal cancer to the Republican party" but describing John McCain and Barack Obama as "the two best candidates we've had in a long time."

In an interview with The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg at New York's Le Cirque restaurant to unveil that magazine's redesign, Brooks decried Palin's anti-intellectualism and compared her to President Bush in that regard:

[Sarah Palin] represents a fatal cancer to the Republican party. When I first started in journalism, I worked at the National Review for Bill Buckley. And Buckley famously said he'd rather be ruled by the first 2,000 names in the Boston phone book than by the Harvard faculty. But he didn't think those were the only two options. He thought it was important to have people on the conservative side who celebrated ideas, who celebrated learning. And his whole life was based on that, and that was also true for a lot of the other conservatives in the Reagan era. Reagan had an immense faith in the power of ideas. But there has been a counter, more populist tradition, which is not only to scorn liberal ideas but to scorn ideas entirely. And I'm afraid that Sarah Palin has those prejudices. I think President Bush has those prejudices.

Brooks praised Palin's natural political talent, but said she is "absolutely not" ready to be president or vice president. He explained, "The more I follow politicians, the more I think experience matters, the ability to have a template of things in your mind that you can refer to on the spot, because believe me, once in office there's no time to think or make decisions."

The New York Times columnist also said that the "great virtue" of Palin's counterpart, Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden, is that he is anything but a "yes man."

"[Biden] can't not say what he thinks," Brooks remarked. "There's no internal monitor, and for Barack Obama, that's tremendously important to have a vice president who will be that way. Our current president doesn't have anybody like that."

Brooks also spent time praising Obama's intellect and skills in social perception, telling two stories of his interactions with Obama that left him "dazzled":

Obama has the great intellect. I was interviewing Obama a couple years ago, and I'm getting nowhere with the interview, it's late in the night, he's on the phone, walking off the Senate floor, he's cranky. Out of the blue I say, 'Ever read a guy named Reinhold Niebuhr?' And he says, 'Yeah.' So i say, 'What did Niebuhr mean to you?' For the next 20 minutes, he gave me a perfect description of Reinhold Niebuhr's thought, which is a very subtle thought process based on the idea that you have to use power while it corrupts you. And I was dazzled, I felt the tingle up my knee as Chris Matthews would say.

And the other thing that does separate Obama from just a pure intellectual: he has tremendous powers of social perception. And this is why he's a politician, not an academic. A couple of years ago, I was writing columns attacking the Republican congress for spending too much money. And I throw in a few sentences attacking the Democrats to make myself feel better. And one morning I get an email from Obama saying, 'David, if you wanna attack us, fine, but you're only throwing in those sentences to make yourself feel better.' And it was a perfect description of what was going through my mind. And everybody who knows Obama all have these stories to tell about his capacity for social perception.

Brooks predicted an Obama victory by nine points, and said that although he found Obama to be "a very mediocre senator," he was is surrounded by what Brooks called "by far the most impressive people in the Democratic party."

"He's phenomenally good at surrounding himself with a team," Brooks said. "I disagree with them on most issues, but I am given a lot of comfort by the fact that the people he's chosen are exactly the people I think most of us would want to choose if we were in his shoes. So again, I have doubts about him just because he was such a mediocre senator, but his capacity to pick staff is impressive."

I don't think I'd call her a fatal cancer either. People forget why McCain chose
her. She's had outstanding success in dealing with all sorts of issues in her
home state, most importantly corruption. I mean, we don't want to be insulting
the Alaskan people. They're not idiots. Perhaps they're aware of something
we're not.

As for David Brooks, I think we're a seeing a man's intellectual weakness
come to the forefront, when his qualifications suggest this shouldn't be
the case. His 'Niebuhr' account was hardly dazzling. Any university TA
could summarize Niebuhr equally well with a very quick read. And per
Brooks' take on Obama's social perceptions and the example he gave
thereof....gosh, I don't know. Seems pretty trivial, as in 'my kid sister
seems just as smart'.

I was watching Mr. Brooks tonight with Mark Shields on the Newshour and
saw the same thing. He was coming across as pure minor league. So much
so that it appeared to make Shields uncomfortable. That takes some doing.

Prediction: David's not long for the New York Times or the Newshour.

I don't know that I would call Pallin a "fatal cancer", however I do agree that she is not presidential material. http://cancerfriends.net

Prediction: Before Obama's first term is over,Brooks will be an Obama Democrat -- and maybe lose his position as the NY Times's resident Republican. Bill Kristol is in the wings, at the ready with his blinders on, to take over as the one who's "more Republlican." (A rational Republican like Brooks is too sane for the position.)

The part about Obama surrounding himself with the best is interesting. He is by nature a team builder. I take that one further, I can take what you give me and create a very dynamic and interesting team.

That's what I like about Obama, maybe he is too much like a college professor but I'd vastly prefer that than what we currently have and the current Republican offerings.

Cancer is just the beginning, she is more like a flesh-eating virus that feeds off the very idea of intellectualism.

RationalDubSteppa, does it make you feel better to compare Gov. Palin to a disease, or does it just help you sleep at night? Please, open your eyes, stop the name calling, and look at the character of who Senator Obama choses to associate himself with. I, personally, would NEVER give some of these people the time of day, little loan associate with them. Who you surround yourself with is a good indication of what type of person you are. That's not my rule, that's society's rule(or at least it used to be).

Who you surround yourself with is a good indication of what type of person you are? As in, John McCain and convicted felon G. Gordon Liddy?

Peggyleg,
Consider who the Republican VP candidate surrounded herself with: for YEARS her husband was a member of a seccessionist Alaskan group. The Alaskan Indepn Party wants Alaska to pull out of the US. She not only LIVED with a person who wanted a US state to pull out of the UNITED STATES but she also spoke at one of their group meetings.
This is a much closer association to a dangerous, anti-American activity than Obama had with Ayers (by the time Obama associated with Ayers, the FBI had already settled his case; he was NOT a convicted criminal but was a professor).

Yes, Liddy, and what about Charles Keating???

come to think of these conservative journalists are not as smart as I thought.
If Obama bits, Chris Dodd, Joe Bidden, and Hillary Clinton and if Obama is mediocre, senator
that means there is no standard for mediocrity at all, for all have become mediocre.
Probably, the measure of achievement is voting for the excesses of spoiled boys club of Bush and McCain voodoo economics of tax cut as you march for war in two countries, that not only bankrupt the US economy but also that of the universe, earth, air, fire and water.

David Brooks is rejecting his child Sarah Palin.
The GOP dream of telegenic performer (see Reygan), poorly educated (see Bush), rabidly ideological and pliable (see the GOP´s evangelical base), cold and calculating (see `haves`) became embodied in the amazing Mrs. Palin. Never mind her sessesionist husband; upon Plame´s affair and trumping the Constitution by GOP´s best men, the word ´treason´ is the logo of the neocons.
Buckley in his late days had a questionable pleasure to recognize his dream, his ideological creation - Mr. Bush. The years of incessant hypocritical talking have been crowned with the outstanding results
It is too late for David Brook to claim that `he is not the father`- he is, his political DNA is in Mrs. Palin´s each cell.

I agree with part of this. It is true that the Conservatives (represented by Brooks) probably rode the coat-tails of the Neo-Cons in the 80s since it led to enormous politcal victories. However, I really dont think Brooks or others could have foreseen that this is where it would all lead. Shoot, I'm certain many Liberals could have foreseen this either (at least 10 years in advance).

I really don't think Brooks and Palin share all the same politcal DNA. While they may have similar positions on this issues; the way in which they came to those positions and the ways in which they would carry out those positions are different. To me, this is just as important as the position itself.

I don't believe that David Brook is the political father of Sarah Palin. That title belongs to Jerry Falwell (and others). Falwell, through his Moral Majority, valued blind faith over intellectualism and thought. Falwell (along with Pat Robertson, etc) was the one that had little use for Conservatives like Brook or Buckley because they didn't think within the narrow mindset of Christian Fundmentalism.

Where I lay fault with Brook (and other Conservatives like him) was his weak attempt to do something about it.

Now, I'm not sure if Brook is sincere in his beliefs, but it's not easy for anybody to make an ideological break and vote for the perceived "enemy". However, if Christopher Buckley can overcome this, I hope Brooks can.

There is a reason why David Brooks is my favorite conservative. I may not agree with him most of the time, but he's smart and comparatively honest. The sad thing is that I'm sure he's getting hate mail from Republicans right now just fot stating the obvious.

Agreed.

"[Sarah Palin] represents a fatal cancer to the Republican party...there has been a...populist tradition, which is not only to scorn liberal ideas but to scorn ideas entirely. And I'm afraid that Sarah Palin has those prejudices."

Let's be proactive people of America!

Today I sent emails to my state Senators and Congressman (search Google "emailing [insert your state] senators" and "emailing [insert your state] congressman" and you will go directly to websites for your Senators and Congressman). I pleaded and begged them to talk to McCain and Palin to stop the hateful madness before it causes the death of one American on American soil!

I also sent a personal email to John McCain at info@johnmccain.com. I respectfully begged him to stop the hate campaign before it's too late. I forwarded my email to all my friends and asked them to send emails.

Please, my fellow Americans, do all the good acts that you can to stop this madness!

I have been undecided in the election up to this point. I don't agree with alot of Obama's policies and I feel he lacks experience. I generally leaned toward McCain in the past. That has changed. I am sickened by the tone of this election. Sara Palin is SCAREY. She is ignorant and self righteous and we have already seen what that brings (George W. Bush). If anything were to happen to McCain during the presidency we would be up a creek. I feel insulted as a woman that McCain would choose someone like this. Someone who doesn't even come close to representing me or any of the women I know. She is a poison to her party. I don't want a "gosh darn it", "say it isn't so", "Joe Sixpack" leader. I want someone who is capable and smart.
I am appalled at the things she accuses Senator Obama of at her rallies. It is unbelievable that she stands there and smiles while people yell "kill him" and "traitor" and racial slurs. If she were any kind of leader she would speak out against this kind of ignorance. McCain is no better. This is not the McCain that I respected. He is nothing but a shell of the man he once was and it is sad. I have been impressed by Senator Obama's calm and collected approach. He has been a class act the entire time and he IS presidential in every sense. Too bad McCain lost my vote.
