Brooks Goldberg

David Brooks spoke frankly about the presidential and vice presidential candidates Monday afternoon, calling Sarah Palin a "fatal cancer to the Republican party" but describing John McCain and Barack Obama as "the two best candidates we've had in a long time."

In an interview with The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg at New York's Le Cirque restaurant to unveil that magazine's redesign, Brooks decried Palin's anti-intellectualism and compared her to President Bush in that regard:

[Sarah Palin] represents a fatal cancer to the Republican party. When I first started in journalism, I worked at the National Review for Bill Buckley. And Buckley famously said he'd rather be ruled by the first 2,000 names in the Boston phone book than by the Harvard faculty. But he didn't think those were the only two options. He thought it was important to have people on the conservative side who celebrated ideas, who celebrated learning. And his whole life was based on that, and that was also true for a lot of the other conservatives in the Reagan era. Reagan had an immense faith in the power of ideas. But there has been a counter, more populist tradition, which is not only to scorn liberal ideas but to scorn ideas entirely. And I'm afraid that Sarah Palin has those prejudices. I think President Bush has those prejudices.

Brooks praised Palin's natural political talent, but said she is "absolutely not" ready to be president or vice president. He explained, "The more I follow politicians, the more I think experience matters, the ability to have a template of things in your mind that you can refer to on the spot, because believe me, once in office there's no time to think or make decisions."

The New York Times columnist also said that the "great virtue" of Palin's counterpart, Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden, is that he is anything but a "yes man."

"[Biden] can't not say what he thinks," Brooks remarked. "There's no internal monitor, and for Barack Obama, that's tremendously important to have a vice president who will be that way. Our current president doesn't have anybody like that."

Brooks also spent time praising Obama's intellect and skills in social perception, telling two stories of his interactions with Obama that left him "dazzled":

Obama has the great intellect. I was interviewing Obama a couple years ago, and I'm getting nowhere with the interview, it's late in the night, he's on the phone, walking off the Senate floor, he's cranky. Out of the blue I say, 'Ever read a guy named Reinhold Niebuhr?' And he says, 'Yeah.' So i say, 'What did Niebuhr mean to you?' For the next 20 minutes, he gave me a perfect description of Reinhold Niebuhr's thought, which is a very subtle thought process based on the idea that you have to use power while it corrupts you. And I was dazzled, I felt the tingle up my knee as Chris Matthews would say.

And the other thing that does separate Obama from just a pure intellectual: he has tremendous powers of social perception. And this is why he's a politician, not an academic. A couple of years ago, I was writing columns attacking the Republican congress for spending too much money. And I throw in a few sentences attacking the Democrats to make myself feel better. And one morning I get an email from Obama saying, 'David, if you wanna attack us, fine, but you're only throwing in those sentences to make yourself feel better.' And it was a perfect description of what was going through my mind. And everybody who knows Obama all have these stories to tell about his capacity for social perception.

Brooks predicted an Obama victory by nine points, and said that although he found Obama to be "a very mediocre senator," he was is surrounded by what Brooks called "by far the most impressive people in the Democratic party."

"He's phenomenally good at surrounding himself with a team," Brooks said. "I disagree with them on most issues, but I am given a lot of comfort by the fact that the people he's chosen are exactly the people I think most of us would want to choose if we were in his shoes. So again, I have doubts about him just because he was such a mediocre senator, but his capacity to pick staff is impressive."

Yet another disingenuous piece of tripe from Brooks, expressing upset as he tiptoes ever so slightly away from his role as cheerleader of the Republican party. Palin does not represent 'a fatal cancer to the Republican party;' rather, she is a natural byproduct of its own rotten core. She epitomizes the 'base' that continues to vote against its own best interests as it is whipped into a lather by the cynical plutocrats who use "God and Country" as crowd-control tools. Sadly, Palin's mentality metastasized throughout the US long ago.

I think you're right. What we see here is a Republican who is covering his tracks so to speak, and at the same time is already preparing for a 'come-back' of his party in the foreseeable future. Upon which of course the whole show will start again. Probably with even more devastating results as the last time they were at the handle...

JFK was considered an undistinguished Senator, too. Some people grow, some can't. Alas, Obama will have huge boots to fill -- FDR is the only modern president to face anything like the mess Bush and company created.

This may be a situation when we cannot look fully to history for lessons of how to deal with today's issues. True, FDR's social and economic policies eliminated much of the suffering that American's were experiencing during the Depression, however it took WWII to create full economic recovery. We will not be using a war to rebuild the economy. The great unknown now is whether funding will exist to build the green economy that Barack envisions.

He's wrong about Senator Obama's mediocrity as a Senator with his own satement of Senator Obama's "social perception". He was intelligent enough to see the path to the white house was through the Senate without being scared by it in order to deal with the majority of thieves who control it. He whipped passed everyone and you wankers can't take it. Your egos are to big, brains to fried and pee pee's to small... admit that and be free.

Well, I applaud David Brooks for finally admiting this. There is another great piece on the Palin and Republican issue at the supercollide blog:

Vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is the living embodiment of right-wing talk-radio and, as such, she will NEVER be ready for high political office. She and others like her will be relegated to the same historical footnote as Father Coughlin -- demagogic, ambitious, hateful, know-nothings. Like talk radio, McCain's nomination of Gov. Palin, the self-styled pitbull with lipstick, is just another sign of how truly degraded our political life has become.
After 35 years of political slicksters and chicanery and finally, this economic tsunami, only a few Americans will be sufficiently amused and turned-on by Sarah to vote for her. Most of us will be relieved to vote for Barack Obama, the only candidate in a generation to have the special world view and sufficient energy, intelligence and empathy for this daunting task.

The McCainites are carrying our country into territory that has explosive potential. It is so offensive that they campaign under signage that says "Country First". What a sad joke on America. McCain has a well known penchant for meaness and over the top anger, and now he is going to take it out on his country. He and Palin are NOT patriots, they demogogues who will stop and nothing in pursuit of power. This is righteousness and family values? This is patriotism? This is the face of conservatism? Shame, shame, shame. These American taliban are the reason many have come to not trusting Christianity. Their dispicable behavior drives people away form a beautiful belief in a loving and affirming God. If you believe in evangelical Christianity, how could you not be impressed with Obama. He is a great example of what they say they believe. Born to a non-believing Muslim, who abandoned him and his mother, he grows up under difficult circumstances, overcomes the bad hand dealt to him and comes to accept Christianity, and its accepting love for all people. If anything, Barak Obama should be their poster child. But these are small minded mean people. McCain, if he has any remaining honor, should apologize, if not to Obama, then America. He is opening wounds that can only leave long lasting scars. As for Palin, the only thing she has proven is that you CAN put lipstick on a pig.

I appreciate David Brook's independence of thought. I often disagree with him - but am always willing to read him and weigh what he has to say for the very reason he does not thoughtlessly tow a party line foregoing conscience and decency. we need thinkers. we need accountability. we need understanding. i may not be on the same side of the political divide as Brooks but i will always read him with an open mind to new ideas regardless of where they sit in my philosophy.

in today's article - i heartily agree - Palin is a dangerous player during a fragile time. she promotes narrow-minded hate, anti-intellectualism, she's the worst of us - a cancer - great description. its not worthy of any of us. left, right, center - wherever you sit politically.

thank you, Mr Brooks.

Unless you know something that the rest of us don't know, I think it's unwise to attack McCain's record as a prisoner of war. Whatever his defects, he went through something that is incomprehensible to most people and by all accounts he survived with some degree of courage and dignity.

John McCain has become a terrible politician and an abysmal candidate. It does us not good go go back to insult his strength.

Philosopherkingtomas, I'm not going to pretend I know what you are eluding to, but you may want to tread lightly on this subject. What your comment is saying or claiming is about as low as I have seen a liberal get yet in this election. Were you even alive during Viet Nam? Very curious to know if you were, because that is a time in our history that everyone who was alie remembers very clearly. Your claim is abhorable. Shame on you.

Peggyleg, your post might be a bit more effective if it were spelled correctly.

Eluding? You mean "alluding"
Viet Nam? Try "Vietnam"
Alie? You mean "Ally"
Abhorable? Isn't even a word. Abhorrent.

A letter to John McCain,

Mr. McCain, you have been weighed in the balances and your time is up. The decisions you have made regarding your campaign have been without regard to the American people. You have put yourself first and country last. Your once respected campaign rallies have now become hate rallies. You have allowed Sarah Palin to hi-jack your campaign rallies and turn them into forums for hate. This has opened the old wounds of racism and fear that continues to plaque the south. The south is one part of the country where you are above 50% in the polls. You nor your running mate are talking about real issues for the American people. The more you push division and hate you will be pushed down in the polls. The hands of God will not let you pass. The American people in this time of our history are not looking for messages filled with hate. Since you are not willing to take back the control you have given to Sarah Palin, you are heading for a political disaster that will be in the history books. Your time is up.
