David Brooks spoke frankly about the presidential and vice presidential candidates Monday afternoon, calling Sarah Palin a "fatal cancer to the Republican party" but describing John McCain and Barack Obama as "the two best candidates we've had in a long time."

In an interview with The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg at New York's Le Cirque restaurant to unveil that magazine's redesign, Brooks decried Palin's anti-intellectualism and compared her to President Bush in that regard:

[Sarah Palin] represents a fatal cancer to the Republican party. When I first started in journalism, I worked at the National Review for Bill Buckley. And Buckley famously said he'd rather be ruled by the first 2,000 names in the Boston phone book than by the Harvard faculty. But he didn't think those were the only two options. He thought it was important to have people on the conservative side who celebrated ideas, who celebrated learning. And his whole life was based on that, and that was also true for a lot of the other conservatives in the Reagan era. Reagan had an immense faith in the power of ideas. But there has been a counter, more populist tradition, which is not only to scorn liberal ideas but to scorn ideas entirely. And I'm afraid that Sarah Palin has those prejudices. I think President Bush has those prejudices.

Brooks praised Palin's natural political talent, but said she is "absolutely not" ready to be president or vice president. He explained, "The more I follow politicians, the more I think experience matters, the ability to have a template of things in your mind that you can refer to on the spot, because believe me, once in office there's no time to think or make decisions."

The New York Times columnist also said that the "great virtue" of Palin's counterpart, Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden, is that he is anything but a "yes man."

"[Biden] can't not say what he thinks," Brooks remarked. "There's no internal monitor, and for Barack Obama, that's tremendously important to have a vice president who will be that way. Our current president doesn't have anybody like that."

Brooks also spent time praising Obama's intellect and skills in social perception, telling two stories of his interactions with Obama that left him "dazzled":

Obama has the great intellect. I was interviewing Obama a couple years ago, and I'm getting nowhere with the interview, it's late in the night, he's on the phone, walking off the Senate floor, he's cranky. Out of the blue I say, 'Ever read a guy named Reinhold Niebuhr?' And he says, 'Yeah.' So i say, 'What did Niebuhr mean to you?' For the next 20 minutes, he gave me a perfect description of Reinhold Niebuhr's thought, which is a very subtle thought process based on the idea that you have to use power while it corrupts you. And I was dazzled, I felt the tingle up my knee as Chris Matthews would say.

And the other thing that does separate Obama from just a pure intellectual: he has tremendous powers of social perception. And this is why he's a politician, not an academic. A couple of years ago, I was writing columns attacking the Republican congress for spending too much money. And I throw in a few sentences attacking the Democrats to make myself feel better. And one morning I get an email from Obama saying, 'David, if you wanna attack us, fine, but you're only throwing in those sentences to make yourself feel better.' And it was a perfect description of what was going through my mind. And everybody who knows Obama all have these stories to tell about his capacity for social perception.

Brooks predicted an Obama victory by nine points, and said that although he found Obama to be "a very mediocre senator," he was is surrounded by what Brooks called "by far the most impressive people in the Democratic party."

"He's phenomenally good at surrounding himself with a team," Brooks said. "I disagree with them on most issues, but I am given a lot of comfort by the fact that the people he's chosen are exactly the people I think most of us would want to choose if we were in his shoes. So again, I have doubts about him just because he was such a mediocre senator, but his capacity to pick staff is impressive."

"Experience" in politics, as in any job application, is just a proxy for measuring knowledge. But if you have empirical evidence that someone has the knowledge to do the job, experience no longer becomes important.

You have to live in a reality based world to learn anything of value. Brooks doesn't so he can't.

Anyone who regards Palin as a "fatal cancer" but praises the man who chose her as his running mate as one of "the best candidates we've had in a long time" is intellectually deficient (to say the least).

McCain didn't choose her. James Dobson did because she's a hand-waving wacko. Dobson black-mailed McCain for evangelical votes.

That's hardly a good defense for McCain.

Absolutely right. This is the weak link in Brooks' praise of McCain.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:17 PM on 10/08/2008

David Brooks still sees him for the candidate he was in 2000 when he was a 'maverick' and a 'compassionate conservative' and was willing to take on his party over principle. That was before he sold out, flip-flopped on most everything and was tempted beyond what he was able to deflect for ambition's sake. Heck, this is as close to David Brooks saying what I've been writing since Senator McCain selected Gov. Palin without vetting. My last email to him was regarding: What if you're wrong? I think he actually read and heard my pleas for rational thought on this.

I've been harping on this point, myself. How can one view McCain "pre-Palin" and "post-Palin" as the same person? I look at it like this:

If "the most important decision a president ever makes is his running mate" then it would seem logical to conclude that picking a completely unqualified running mate means McCain is unqualified.

Personally, I think Brooks gave away his real feelings about McCain in his story about Obama's email reaction to his column. He's just trying to make himself feel better for not seeing how reckless and cynical McCain has always been.

You wish you were as articulate and bright - Palin is an insult to every woman who has a thinking brain...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:06 PM on 10/08/2008

While Sarah may have a brain, she has chosen not to feed it, therefore, she does not represent any female who reads often from various sources, or mines the net for knowledge. She can't string one complete sentence together without a speech writer and both of them are fanning the flames of hatred.

How can either of them talk about reaching across the aisle when they are spewing bitterness and anger? Not sure this is how Christ would behave in any circumstances, at the very minimum, we can call them hypocritical.

Obama respectfully defends himself...never throwing the first punch. People are seeing in Obama his calm, quiet strength. He defends himself against someone throwing a temper tantrum. Not looking good for McSame or Sara Pain and stomping their feet won't work this time.

David Brooks says whatever he needs to make himself "feel better" despite the truth? That explains his ridiculous columns.

Is this what he's paid for? I want his job.

Honestly?

David Brooks is one of the few conservative voices of reason that gives me hope for the rest of them. Living proof that the right's anti-intellectualism doesn't extend to all of them. I tend to check my own extremely liberal assumptions against his, for balance.

My conservative father sends me anti-Obama spam every day. And every day, I send my response. Today, when he sent me Rush Limbaugh, I sent him back David Brooks, Macallan to his Bud Light.

He will dump her like an old leaky boot. She is his banner geisha girl - and what happens when you have finished with them - you want to get rid of them as quickly as possible.

There will be many stories from her when this is over - going for his jugular as she delusionally thinks she is in prime position for a run in 2012 and will need to distance herself from him.

She clearly has no loyalty to anyone other than her own ego - have you seen how her family appear to have no warmth with her when she parades them on stage as her little 'family values' props?

I'm with you-- I see that now-- no warmth-- is that a warm family?- a family for sure but I have a theory that teen pregnancies don't always occur in the families that are communicating on every level-- and warmth is a level---

I think Evita Palin will write a book, go on the lecture circuit, get a show on Faux and make millions of dollars. Justice? No. But that's the way it works in America, for better or worse. She doesn't care about the GOP brand at this point, she's creating her own brand. Just as any narcissist does.

She will run for her ol' pal Ted Stevens's Senate seat.

Some people make great senators, some make great presidents. Ted Kennedy is the former, while Barack Obama is likely the latter.

While David Brooks has lurched around himself in his NY Times opinion pieces about Sarah Palin, this commentary offers substantial insight about both Brooks and Obama.

Thank you, Huffington Post, for the opportunity to view this.

Wow, I can't stand Brooks, but hey, thanks for finally telling the truth. I guess when the boat is already sunk, it's not too hard to point out that the boat is taking on water. Unfortunately, it's too freakin' late. Maybe he should have found a soul several years ago when it mattered.

Why are McCain and Palin attacking OBAMA? To deflect from their much more serious problems!

PALIN is fast approaching “HER OWN DAY OF RECKONING” on "HER MISUSE OF POWER INVESTIGATION" and it will not be “Good!”

The report will be released Friday, Oct 10!

She has finally agreed to testify but that is simply another delay tactic to try and stop the Friday Report!

The only reason she and her "Co-Gov" husband are now willing to talk is the Alaska COURTS told them they have to answer questions! The same goes for the aids that refused to answer subpoenas!

McCain is as Guilty in the cover-up that has been pursued the last month and should be held responsible for the Delayed Cooperation.

McCains's attorneys have twisted the arms of 5 Republicans in Alaska to take the DELAY all the way to the Alaska Supreme Court!

This is a disgraceful interference in a non-partisan investigation!

It again goes to McCain's judgment in selecting a running-mate that was under investigation!

If he knew about the investigation why would he select her? Poor judgement!

If he did not know then it is clear he did not properly Vet her. Poor judgement!

Either way it shows the chaos in his poorly run campaign and his own Poor Judgment!

They have agreed to cooperate for one reason only:

They know McCain is going to lose and they are desperate to save her Governor job. Period.

I sure hope they try to run her in 2012!! This would be the best possible situation for the Democrats.

McCainPalin has nowhere to go now but down. He can run away from President Bush, but he can't run away from the Republican Party. The Republicans will be regarded from now on as "the party that wrecked America." Over the weeks ahead, as carnage in the economy and the financial markets ramps up, it will become increasingly clear. It is important that this meme be spread through the internet. I urge all commentators to adopt and spread the idea that the Republicans are "the party that wrecked America." It will work because it is the truth. Use it freely. Just spread the word.
