Brooks Goldberg

David Brooks spoke frankly about the presidential and vice presidential candidates Monday afternoon, calling Sarah Palin a "fatal cancer to the Republican party" but describing John McCain and Barack Obama as "the two best candidates we've had in a long time."

In an interview with The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg at New York's Le Cirque restaurant to unveil that magazine's redesign, Brooks decried Palin's anti-intellectualism and compared her to President Bush in that regard:

[Sarah Palin] represents a fatal cancer to the Republican party. When I first started in journalism, I worked at the National Review for Bill Buckley. And Buckley famously said he'd rather be ruled by the first 2,000 names in the Boston phone book than by the Harvard faculty. But he didn't think those were the only two options. He thought it was important to have people on the conservative side who celebrated ideas, who celebrated learning. And his whole life was based on that, and that was also true for a lot of the other conservatives in the Reagan era. Reagan had an immense faith in the power of ideas. But there has been a counter, more populist tradition, which is not only to scorn liberal ideas but to scorn ideas entirely. And I'm afraid that Sarah Palin has those prejudices. I think President Bush has those prejudices.

Brooks praised Palin's natural political talent, but said she is "absolutely not" ready to be president or vice president. He explained, "The more I follow politicians, the more I think experience matters, the ability to have a template of things in your mind that you can refer to on the spot, because believe me, once in office there's no time to think or make decisions."

The New York Times columnist also said that the "great virtue" of Palin's counterpart, Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden, is that he is anything but a "yes man."

"[Biden] can't not say what he thinks," Brooks remarked. "There's no internal monitor, and for Barack Obama, that's tremendously important to have a vice president who will be that way. Our current president doesn't have anybody like that."

Brooks also spent time praising Obama's intellect and skills in social perception, telling two stories of his interactions with Obama that left him "dazzled":

Obama has the great intellect. I was interviewing Obama a couple years ago, and I'm getting nowhere with the interview, it's late in the night, he's on the phone, walking off the Senate floor, he's cranky. Out of the blue I say, 'Ever read a guy named Reinhold Niebuhr?' And he says, 'Yeah.' So i say, 'What did Niebuhr mean to you?' For the next 20 minutes, he gave me a perfect description of Reinhold Niebuhr's thought, which is a very subtle thought process based on the idea that you have to use power while it corrupts you. And I was dazzled, I felt the tingle up my knee as Chris Matthews would say.

And the other thing that does separate Obama from just a pure intellectual: he has tremendous powers of social perception. And this is why he's a politician, not an academic. A couple of years ago, I was writing columns attacking the Republican congress for spending too much money. And I throw in a few sentences attacking the Democrats to make myself feel better. And one morning I get an email from Obama saying, 'David, if you wanna attack us, fine, but you're only throwing in those sentences to make yourself feel better.' And it was a perfect description of what was going through my mind. And everybody who knows Obama all have these stories to tell about his capacity for social perception.

Brooks predicted an Obama victory by nine points, and said that although he found Obama to be "a very mediocre senator," he was is surrounded by what Brooks called "by far the most impressive people in the Democratic party."

"He's phenomenally good at surrounding himself with a team," Brooks said. "I disagree with them on most issues, but I am given a lot of comfort by the fact that the people he's chosen are exactly the people I think most of us would want to choose if we were in his shoes. So again, I have doubts about him just because he was such a mediocre senator, but his capacity to pick staff is impressive."

I can't believe my hears--I have watched David Brooks on public t.v. channel during this campaign, and thought he was very biased against Obama. In my opinion, it seemed hard for him to etch out that Obama was a serious contender. He would find every other, than the obivious--that Obama stands for and believes in what each and every one of us desire- a better America. I am surprised at his comments regarding Palin--- and am shocked that he finally bears all on Palin-- Now I guess I don't have mute him when he is talking.

VotingisReform: I guess now that David Brooks agrees with YOUR views he must be right. But he wasn't before.

Don't matter either way. Fact is, even the staunchest Republicans with half a brain know that Palin is a pinhead and that she's proving toxic to McCain's already moribund campaign.

How would you know what D. Brooks says or believes if you habitually "mute him" when he's talking? You READ MINDS!?!??!?

Time out!

David Brooks says (in his criticism of Sarah Palin, who by the way, if anyone remembers is the VP choice) "The more I follow politicians, the more I think experience matters, the ability to have a template of things in your mind that you can refer to on the spot, because believe me, once in office there's no time to think or make decisions."

AND

said that although he found Obama to be "a very mediocre senator,"

AND

He's phenomenally good at surrounding himself with a team," .

THAT is the person you guys are all rooting for???

no, we're just happy that even a smidgeon of truth came out of the conservative camp, and that he called Sarah Palin what she is...Obviously, we don't share the view of Sen. Obama from the Brooks camp, but we'll take what little truth we can get from his side

Shame on you, John McCain!
Conservative op-ed columnist David Brooks' honesty is commendable when he calls Sarah Palin a cancer on the Republican Party and acknowledges that she is unqualified to be President of Vice President. What he does not do, is to point the finger at the man who chose her as his running mate. Let me do so. Shame on you, John McCain. Your proudly claim to place service to our nation above politics. In the past you have often done so. Now, you've dishonoured that claim by selected Palin as your running mate. You met her twice. You barely knew her. If you had honestly asked the critical question, "Is she qualified to succeed me, in the event of my death or incapacitation?," your answer would have been a resounding, "No!" Instead, you took the low ground and asked, "Will she help me win this election?" You, a lifelong patriot, chose to place ambition above the good of our nation. Shame on you, John McCain! Perhaps, having survived Vietnam and malignant melanomas, you've come to believe in your invinvibility. But we cannot and will not blind ourselves to the fact that you, like all of us, are vulnerable. There is too much at stake. With your unconscionable choice of Sarah Palin, who is unqualified to serve a heartbeat from the residency, you've placed this nation at grave risk in a time of great peril.
So again I say, shame on you, John McCain.
Perhaps

In Indiana we are boycotting all McCain that is Cindy McCain's family business products. Maybe this will give her even a colder chill down her back. At least temporarily BOYCOTT BUSCH BEER AND DRINK their competitors products which are: Molson, Miller, Heineken and Coors.

This stratedgy could score big because the (BUD) stock is a bit overinflated; possibly because of the InBev offer to buy Budweiser, possibly because rich republicans are buying (BUD) stock for reasons of personal pleasure.

Lets call a spade a spade. The GOP are insincere to themselves and to Voters. First, why nominate Mccain when they know he is incompetent?. Mccain's abilities of faux pas and inconsistences are VISIBLE. Mcain nominating Sarah is a clear evidence that he is risky to the party and to the Country. Why not Rommeny? Rom is more educated and have economic ideas to give to the Voters. What can Mccain give to the GOP and to the rest of the country??? NOTHING.
Until the GOP realisead that the world have move on, ordinary people can no longer be fooled by lies and innuendoes. Thanks to the new vibe of communications--THE INTERNET.
OBAMA WILL WIN.. HE HAS THE QUALITY TO LEAD IN THIS TIME..THE GOP SHOULD BLAME EACH OTHER FOR THERE FAILURE IN NOMINATING A SICKLY GAMBLING INCONSISTENT SEMI- ILLETERATE TO REPRESENT THEM. THEY SHOULD STOP GAMBLING WITH THERE INTERGRITY BY VERBALISING THERE SUPPORT FOR MCCAIN. THROWING CHILDISH FALSE ACCUSATION AT OBAMA MADE THEM LOOK LIKE A LOONY TO THE REST OF THE WORLD. FACT IS THE MORE GOP THROWS MUD AT OBAMA WE LOVE HIM.OBAMA IS WHAT THE WORLD IS WAITING FOR AND NOT A HOCKEY MOM, WHOSE UNDERAGE DAUGHTER IS PREGNANT. SARAH HAVE SHOWN THE WORLD THAT SHE FAILED TO MONITOR HER OWN UNDERAGE CHILD, HOW ON EARTH WOULD SHE MONITOR A GREAT COUNTRY LIKE AMERICA??? THE GOP NEED A REALITY CHECK.

The cancer on the Republican Party is not Sarah Palin. She's just a tumor. The cancer metastasized long ago. It's called Conservatism. Conservatism is a philosophy without a foundation. It's just a skein of transparent lies, intertwined with the belief that White people are better than anybody else. I'm a White person. I am stating that White people are not better than everybody else. Race can only determine personal character if you let it become important. When that happens, race destroys personal character..

Just because some Republicans have found the ability to denounce the idiocy of Sarah Palin's candidacy does not mean that the conservative ideology can be rehabilitated. It is a vicious and morally bankrupt philosophy, motivated by chauvinism, selfishness, and fear. It is tolerable so long as it is not in power, but the possibility of its coming back to power, to wreak its destruction on society, the economy, and democracy mean that we must be resolutely intolerant of its lies, distortions, and schemes. We need not persecute Republicans or conservatives, but we must be vigilant to refute and denounce their dishonesty, their stupidity, and their determined ignorance. I would like to see conservatism become extinct in my lifetime. It has refuted itself as convincingly and as unanswerably as Communism.

Yes, the whole "trickle down" philosophy is rotten at the core. that is why Barack continually mentions, "growth from the bottom up."
The top of the pyramid will always get theirs, but for the whole system to be healthy, you have to nurture the base.

Great response Querent. Adding to this, the Republican Party emphasizes religion. How can anyone attending these rallies of hate say they believe in God. Hypocrits!!

Totally agree. Until all the Newt Gingrich / Reagan / NeoCon Republicans are gone, we will not be on stable ground. We need "Teddy Roosevelt" style Republicans back in Washington.

I get your point, but I respectfully disagree. Old fashioned Conservatism and Liberalism have more in common than they have differences.

What is ruining American politics is "neo-conservatism", which includes the premise that it is OK to intentionally paint your political opponents as unpatriotic and evil, for the purposes of rallying a few uninformed voters.

The Democratic Party today has incorporated the best tenets from both old-fashioned Conservatism and Liberalism. A balanced budget, staying out of people's private lives as much as possible, avoiding foreign wars, civil rights, women's rights, gay rights, keeping our country strong, fair taxation instead of favoritism for the rich, energy independence, and now universal healthcare, ........these are principles that today's Democratic Party has synergised from both of the political parties of the past.

When Arianna recently said that the Republican Party had been hijacked by the neo-conservatives, she wasn't just whistling Dixie.

I would say Cancer just about sums it up. Since We have no idea who this woman is (as if we don't know who Barack is), she IS like cancer. No one knows when you have cancer until it's too late. BO is the doctor and the doctor is in.

It appears the best and the brightest are on the comback! After years of the dumbing-down of the presidency with Bush, Cheney and their supporters, we need Obama and this breadth of fresh air.

The David Brooks I have come to know from his many television appearances and his articles in "The New York Times," I believe, is very forthcoming and brave for his comments. David does not very easily make positive comments about any Democrats and there are the times I can almost sense that he is just about close to tears with the ambiguity of favoring Republicans, but finding it difficult to back up what they're doing. When he once in a while makes a favorable comment about a Democrat, you can believe he means it.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:22 PM on 10/09/2008

I totally agree with your comment. I too have spent a fair amount of time both watching Brooks (especially on The NewsHour on PBS) and reading some of his columns. I don't agree with his conservative views, but can't help feeling that he greatly admires Obama and I wouldn't be surprised if he would end up voting for Barack - as much as it might pain him to do so. Of course, we probably would never know - although wouldn't it be refreshing if some prominent Republicans or conservative commentators admitted to doing so.
What many people fail to realize is that Obama is an incredibly smart man who realizes that he is responsible for setting the "competency" level for blacks/biracial/other minorities who may someday aspire to the Presidency. Obama must be aware that if he in any way "screws up" as President then it will be that much harder for the next minority candidate to come along. All Americans should be somewhat reassured knowing that Obama will no doubt give 110% to the job - because he's not in it just for himself.

Hey Dave, as one of your glorious Republican strategists, Donald Rumsfeld, said, "...you go to war with the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time."

Tough shitzki, suckers!
