Brooks Goldberg

David Brooks spoke frankly about the presidential and vice presidential candidates Monday afternoon, calling Sarah Palin a "fatal cancer to the Republican party" but describing John McCain and Barack Obama as "the two best candidates we've had in a long time."

In an interview with The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg at New York's Le Cirque restaurant to unveil that magazine's redesign, Brooks decried Palin's anti-intellectualism and compared her to President Bush in that regard:

[Sarah Palin] represents a fatal cancer to the Republican party. When I first started in journalism, I worked at the National Review for Bill Buckley. And Buckley famously said he'd rather be ruled by the first 2,000 names in the Boston phone book than by the Harvard faculty. But he didn't think those were the only two options. He thought it was important to have people on the conservative side who celebrated ideas, who celebrated learning. And his whole life was based on that, and that was also true for a lot of the other conservatives in the Reagan era. Reagan had an immense faith in the power of ideas. But there has been a counter, more populist tradition, which is not only to scorn liberal ideas but to scorn ideas entirely. And I'm afraid that Sarah Palin has those prejudices. I think President Bush has those prejudices.

Brooks praised Palin's natural political talent, but said she is "absolutely not" ready to be president or vice president. He explained, "The more I follow politicians, the more I think experience matters, the ability to have a template of things in your mind that you can refer to on the spot, because believe me, once in office there's no time to think or make decisions."

The New York Times columnist also said that the "great virtue" of Palin's counterpart, Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden, is that he is anything but a "yes man."

"[Biden] can't not say what he thinks," Brooks remarked. "There's no internal monitor, and for Barack Obama, that's tremendously important to have a vice president who will be that way. Our current president doesn't have anybody like that."

Brooks also spent time praising Obama's intellect and skills in social perception, telling two stories of his interactions with Obama that left him "dazzled":

Obama has the great intellect. I was interviewing Obama a couple years ago, and I'm getting nowhere with the interview, it's late in the night, he's on the phone, walking off the Senate floor, he's cranky. Out of the blue I say, 'Ever read a guy named Reinhold Niebuhr?' And he says, 'Yeah.' So i say, 'What did Niebuhr mean to you?' For the next 20 minutes, he gave me a perfect description of Reinhold Niebuhr's thought, which is a very subtle thought process based on the idea that you have to use power while it corrupts you. And I was dazzled, I felt the tingle up my knee as Chris Matthews would say.

And the other thing that does separate Obama from just a pure intellectual: he has tremendous powers of social perception. And this is why he's a politician, not an academic. A couple of years ago, I was writing columns attacking the Republican congress for spending too much money. And I throw in a few sentences attacking the Democrats to make myself feel better. And one morning I get an email from Obama saying, 'David, if you wanna attack us, fine, but you're only throwing in those sentences to make yourself feel better.' And it was a perfect description of what was going through my mind. And everybody who knows Obama all have these stories to tell about his capacity for social perception.

Brooks predicted an Obama victory by nine points, and said that although he found Obama to be "a very mediocre senator," he was is surrounded by what Brooks called "by far the most impressive people in the Democratic party."

"He's phenomenally good at surrounding himself with a team," Brooks said. "I disagree with them on most issues, but I am given a lot of comfort by the fact that the people he's chosen are exactly the people I think most of us would want to choose if we were in his shoes. So again, I have doubts about him just because he was such a mediocre senator, but his capacity to pick staff is impressive."

Palin is quite simply the evangelicals' revenge for McCain slamming the religious right in the past (when he actually was more of a "maverick"). And final proof that the Repubs cannot exist without these theocratic wanna-bes.

This hits it on the head. McCain circa 2000 may have been interesting as a candidate. But given that the Republicans are wedded to the Talibaptist theocrats, they now will have to reap what they have sown.

Sarah Palin and cancer have much in common - they are both insidious diseases.

anyone who doesn't feel uplifted by the presence of Barack Obama is no longer capable of feeling. He is THE most refreshing person in politics since John F. Kennedy.

John F. Kennedy was an honorable man. It is hard for me to put his name in the same sentence as Senator Barrack Obama. Senator Obama has been less than honest about his associations with certain people.

And remember, his daughter, Caroline Kennedy, agrees with your statement. That is really saying something.

His comments about Palin do add perspective and are insightful, but I think his comments about Obama are more...Important? Moving? Pointed? Perhaps even assuring? I agree with them, I've noted Obama's abilities to listen, think and to surround himself with a team- and people he doesn't agree with even. He'll call or talk to someone he doesn't agree with on an issue or a matter for their side- to better his understanding and to strengthen his position. I had the pleasure of listening to an interview/conversation between Ed Norton and a friend and former student radio colleague (who was is also an Iraq Veteran) during the primary voting drives, and both came out in the conversation supporting Obama, but Norton remarks weren't just weighted by his fame or intelligence- but by his clear approval of Obama's perceptive abilities and vision. Quotes from Lincoln included.

To me, we need a president who is more than competent- but wants to support competent people and be supported by them.
A well-meaning, well-intentioned, wise and productive cabinet will be necessary, and I admire his support of young people and encouragement in us to server our communities. I think writers and journalists can certainly appreciate Obama's openness and intellect as well- and am glad to hear (and read) this from Brooks.

McCain & Palin are the republican 'throw away" candidates. They're looking to 2012 to run an unbruised repugnant.

I sometimes wonder that myself, I mean these to are really just that awful--it makes you wonder if that was the Repub intent all along..... Yet somehow 30-40% of people will vote for this charade of a ticket, just read piggyleg's posts on the site......Pathetic.

Oh, there you go again, talking all nice and everything about me!! What organizations are Senator Obama affiliated with? Acorn, that's right. Hmm, what a great thing to have on his resume, oh, but that's all he has, he has never run as much as a gas station and be expected to turn a profit. (No offense to people who run gas stations). Senator Obama is up the his waist on this fannie mae/freddie mac meltdown. He received the 2nd highest (right behind Chris Dodd-D) of campaign contributions from the organization. Hmm, wonder what he had to do in return, turn his head to the total LOOTING that was running rampet among all the Democratic "Elites". John Kerry and his type, oh, and Kerry was #3 on the list.

Believe me, there are ALOT more than 30-40% of Americans out here like me, more like 52-53%, probably more, but that's all we need and more for a majority.

I diasgree, the ultrafundamnetalists/Neocons feel they were betrayed by Bush and the "country club republicans" .

They believe the only way to push their agenda will be to have a "pure" candidate. Palin is that person. They see her as their "messiah" in 2012.

Like who?

I don't think McCain sees himself as a throwaway. Now, maybe we do (and Palin for sure, though I'm sure she'll live long enough to come back to haunt us in the flesh), but he's been at this attempt for years, which to some may seem admirable or tenacious- I just see his "ambition" as part of his egotistical and aggressive personality. If there's anything nice I could say about McCain it isn't how qualified he is to be president...well maybe a bit more than Bush- but he's twice as angry, and that's simply unnerving and worrisome.

But again, who? Romney? Ghouliani? Perhaps Huckabee?
I think even Huckabee (a bit nutty, but extremely outwardly nice and honest) will be tarnished by all this.

All of you posters really need a start living in the real world, get out of your fantasy world. The Republicans are strongly behind their candidates, and whoever started this rumor did it to give all of you liberals some red meat to try and deflect attention away from what is really going on. That is the MORAL character and judgement of Senator Obama. It is what it is, know it, believeit, live it.

The only problem I have is the Huffposts cowardice in refusing to allow anyone to comment on the truth of McCain's source of power - the AZ mob, that controls every AZ pol, regardless of party! I STILL don't think that ANY AZ Pol should be prez.!

There's an Arizona Mob?

Man, I wasn't considering living or moving out there (Phoenix's Meth reputation precedes it for one...), but that certainly doesn't make me want to move out there, unsubstantiated or not.

I think McCain's personality and more substantial associations and judgments are more damning.

Tedger, even sites like the Huffington Post have to turn a profit. They don't want the postings on their site to sway away HONEST, hard working Americans that invest in them. You need to take that fairy tale to your nearest "dream land" site and post it there, you'll get alot of support there!

Anyone who beleives that we should continue the policies of the last eight years are just closing their eyes to the facts. This is the worst shape the country has been in during my lifetime.

Anyone who believes that Sarah Palin is qualified to be vice president is just kidding themselves. Not only is she unqualified, she seems a bit kooky and mean-spirited to me. Plus, I don't think that Pastor was successful in keeping the witches away. She's is doing a lot of screeching!

There is no excuse for the venomous attacks the McCain/Palin camp are spewing. It seems that they are trying to incite riots. Is this what they need to do to keep their base excited? What does that say about their base? Is this the Christian way to act?

Desr Pitbullsbite, the last time I checked, there was still free speech in this country. Gov. Palin nor Senator McCain are saying anything about Senator Obama that isn't true. Listen to them, you may learn a thing or two.

Finally. Something correct from your keyboard!

You are right-

People do learn a lot when they listen to McSame and his Lipstick:

They learn that these 2 are the wrong choice for this country!

That's first thing learned. Based on their ideas and plans for the future.

Next is that these 2 are flat out l.i.a.r.s. !

Thanks for the pointing out these 2 obvious facts!

Whew! It is such a relief to know that not all republicans fit the caricature of low information voters who are content to be told what to think and to accept others interpretations of facts and information. More power to the republican intellectual and those republicans who choose to think and not allow themselves to be manipulated by fear-mongers. Nevertheless, based upon the clip of the McCain-Palin Mod in Ohio on YouTube, there remains much education for these republicans to do for their particular constituency.

John McCain Loves to Gamble.

The Sarah Palin pick was s huge gamble for McCain. I can't say if it has payed off yet. We will have to see Nov. 4. I personally think that picking Sarah Palin did nothing to get swing voters or independents. This was the voting block McCain is targeting. Based on his views and stances on the issues, McCain should be getting blown out. But McCain is banking on the "RedNeck Vote" to be strong and carry him. So he decided to play to the BASE! THE FAR RIGHT BASE OF THE GOP.

So he gave up on Michigan, (Left Leaning State).

He gave up on disappointed Dems.

He Gave up on the swing voters.

He gave up on the Independents.

By Giving up the way he has he in effect has Gave up the Presidency!!

McCain loves rolling the dice but this time i think he is out of Chips.
