"Kath And Kim" Get Panned: Unfunny And Detestable

KATH & Kim," NBC's unfunny adaptation of the wildly funny Australian sitcom, is arguably the worst idea for an import from the Land Down Under since Vegemite.

"Kath & Kim," like the yeast-extract spread and its offspring, the Vegemite sandwich and the Cheesymite scroll, is just not something that suits the American palette.

The big difference between the show in Australia and its dish-water copy here is that (at least as far as entertainment goes), Australian producers know how to make fun of themselves. American TV people prefer to make fun of everybody else.

While the characters in the Aussie version are, by all accounts, squirm-worthy, they are still likeable. In the American version, they are merely detestable. In the Aussie version, they strive for more. Here, they just exist.

Starring Molly Shannon as repulsive mom Kath Day and Selma Blair as her bratty, pouty, soulless daughter Kim, the plot revolves around their mall crawling and complete and utter stupidity.
