Charlize

Charlize Theron will have to pay - perhaps eight figures - for wearing the wrong watch, a Manhattan judge has ruled.

Watchmaker Raymond Weil has already won summary judgment in a federal civil complaint that Theron broke their deal by failing to exclusively wear the pricey timekeeper in public.

Theron and her production company, Denver & Delilah Films Inc., were listed as defendants. The "Monster" star begged out of penalties, but US District Court Judge Colleen McMahon denied the Oscar winner.

"It is obvious that Theron cannot be dismissed . . . she was not an unwary agent," McMahon wrote, noting that Theron's initials appeared 10 times on the 10-page contract the actress broke.

Damages will be awarded at a jury trial. The watchmaker is seeking $20 million.

They should look the other way after she signed a contract? You're obviously not a business person.

Oh that's fair. WTF? That judge must be a woman with beauty issues. THAT'S what's she's paying for. Charley is the best thing to come out of S. Africa since Nelson and they're going all stupid on her. Crazy U.S.A.

Barack/Joe (goes good with a nice pizza :)

Fair is what then? Taking money from someone and then not doing what they paid you for?
USA is irrelevant.

Seems fair to me. Celebrities get paid a ridicoulous amount for endorsements and get so much swag. Another case where they seem to think they are above the law (or a contract).

you don't say how much she was paid initially by weil to wear the watch.

Now, every time a microphone is in front of her, she should remind people that she was sued by the Raymond Weil watch company. Over and over and over again.

They may not like that publicity.

I never understood the appeal of overpriced watches...you can buy a 69.95 watch that will tell you the exact time within billionths of a second...who needs to spend thousands for a watch?

On the bright side, this will end product placements on actors. No actor in their right mind will ever enter into one of these deals again.

They love the swag...of course if you get the goodies, it comes with a little obligation, don't you think?
That said, Charize is wonderful...sorry she feels she was wronged, but she should have known what she was getting into.

The company is getting more than 20 mil in publicity over this trial but wanting HER to pay 22 mil is a joke.

I agree that the contract money be returned but that's about it. I haven't heard the company went under as a result of that people suddenly stopped wearing their watches because she didn't wear it 24/7.

Talk about corporate greed.

With all the noise about who is signed up or exclusive with different makers of everything we would hope these stars who get paid massive amounts just to show up at openings and wearing the right things would remember which what they signed on to wear. It cannot take so much thought to make the what you are supposed to wear be the only thing in sight so they don't make this million dollar mistake.

Hey celebs this is what happens when you are too much into the 'product placement' bit, ya actually have to do something for the $. Charlize, jeez I expected better of ya. Woulda expected this from Paris or Britney but not you.
If you are a real big rich celeb why do you need a watch anyway, you either have an entourage to let you know what time it is or you don't have to be in a rush to be anywhere, & everyone will wait for you.

Can anyone explain how the watch company was damaged? Did their sales suddenly plummet after she was seen not wearing it? Had their sales perceptively risen when she signed the contract. Yes, she may have broken their agreement. We aren't told the circumstances. But, all in all, I love it when the rich and famous tangle with the greedy corporations that create them.

They got the publicity that they were going to get from her. Now they get the publicity of a lawsuit, and will recoup some of the money they paid her (which was significantly less than the lawsuit asks). It could well have been their intent all along, or it could've just seemed like a good move to make when they happened to catch a paparazzi photo with a different watch. It's better for them if she breaks the contract after a while, after all.
