ABC:

Despite pledges by President George W. Bush and American intelligence officials to the contrary, hundreds of US citizens overseas have been eavesdropped on as they called friends and family back home, according to two former military intercept operators who worked at the giant National Security Agency (NSA) center in Fort Gordon, Georgia.
Intercept operators allege the NSA is listening to citizens' phone calls.

"These were just really everyday, average, ordinary Americans who happened to be in the Middle East, in our area of intercept and happened to be making these phone calls on satellite phones," said Adrienne Kinne, a 31-year old US Army Reserves Arab linguist assigned to a special military program at the NSA's Back Hall at Fort Gordon from November 2001 to 2003.

Kinne described the contents of the calls as "personal, private things with Americans who are not in any way, shape or form associated with anything to do with terrorism."

C'mon all--we know the GOP has --.shall we say issues-- with other people's private lives. They want to wiretap and spy on us not because of security--but because it's a leg up on people politically. And in that WH it's not about running the country, it's all about politics.

I've always been of the mind they managed to keep a lot of house and senate members in check because they had wires on them . . . . It would make sense out of some of the weenie behavior of the Democrats and the psychotic, bull headed behavior of some Republicans.

Actually, it's the left wing which plays the politically correct game of worrying about people's private lives and thoughts. I know of no significant intrusion of the right wing into privacy, but the left is darn nosy.

You find me ONE average liberal who doesn't turn Red and blow smoke out of their ears at the very mention of the "Patriot" Act. One.
You know of no significant intrusion of the right wing???
Gay marriage
Abortion
Prayer in Schools
teaching of Creationism in schools
How about the pundits on Jamie Lynn Spears' pregnancy..(of course the same rules don't apply to Bristol palin)
How about abstinence only sex ed?
how about all the protesters at abortion clinics?
How about the people who have planted bombs and shot doctors at abortion clinics?
How about the pharmacists refusing to fill prescriptions for Birth Control?
I'd call every one of these significant intrusions.
All you guys ever want to do is boss people around so everyone will be as boring as you.

Really? Shouldn't a free society be free to travel as we please? Why can't we vacation in Cuba? Because the left won't allow it? I don't think so.

Read Shock Doctrine. Taking away civil rights is a byproduct of shock capitalism. Americans should be very scared but not of foreign terrorists. Americans should be scared about the policies of the Bush administration.

I am astonished by the idiocy of people who say, "Spy on me, I have nothing to hide, please keep me safe from terrorists". Chumps don't realize they were already being spied on, and there was no one to save them from 911, because the corruption, the cancer, was already far too advanced. It erupted into 911, and metastasized into the banking failures we have today.

If you are a commenter on blogs, you can be sure you are on the list of 8 million terror suspects.

Bravo!

It never ceases to amaze me how the "I have nothing to hide" crowd are clueless about how invasive fear-driven government can be. These are the same folks who rant on about 'Big Government', all without realizing how big, wasteful and dangerous this one has become.

Big government is code for progressive taxation. It never means any other restriction on government powers. Just dont tax our incomes and government should have any other power it wants.

As we know, or perhaps more accurately as we have been told by various televangelists, God is punishing the USA in a variety of ways (natural disasters, financial disasters, terrorist attacks) for our imagined sins.

So on that basis, this is perfectly understandable national security initiative.

Earlier this week, Tom Brokaw asked the candidates what sacrifices they would ask the American people to make for our nation.

Of course in a democracy there can be citizens' initiatives.

I'm asking all of you out there to stop thinking any positive thoughts about evolution or science for the good of our country.

Country First!

Big Brother Bush wants to know everything about you. Next step is the knock on he door in the middle of the night and rendition to a secret prison for saying unflattering things about those in power. Can't happen here? It has started.

I can't fathom that people think this is ok in order to "protect" the US. Those people over there who are supposedly trying to protect America's freedoms are forfeiting theirs to the government they are supposed to be fighting for.

It's just mind-boggling.

Hoover did the same thing, to ensure his position. If was legal to listen in on JFK and MLK getting it on, it should be good enough for average Americans.

How many congresscritters visiting the Middle East are now on tape having phone sex? Perhaps that's why they were so hot to rubber-stamp the $700 billion corporate criminal heist.

An interesting comparison.

In Saudi Arabia - which is portrayed as an extremely conservative society - what one does in one's house is private - between the person and his God. Unless of course one makes enough noise to raise a public ruckus.

It seems we have something to teach our staunch ally, perhaps.
