Former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating, a McCain campaign co-chairman, edged up to an explicitly racial attack on Barack Obama on Thursday, describing the Illinois Senator as a "guy of the street" before raising his youthful drug use.

Appearing on Dennis Miller's radio show, Keating charged that the Democratic nominee was covering up his "very extreme" record, and urged Obama to be more honest with Americans. "He ought to admit," Keating said, "'You know, I've got to be honest with you. I was a guy of the street. I was way to the left. I used cocaine. I voted liberally, but I'm back at the center.'"

Keating began to address Obama's former pastor Jeremiah Wright -- a topic that John McCain himself has said should be off-limits -- but Miller interrupted him to return to the discussion of cocaine.

Listen to the audio here.

The criticism is the latest in a spate of increasingly aggressive attacks from the McCain-Palin camp.

It's unclear what Keating meant by "a guy of the street," but his assertion that Obama should "admit" his brief drug use in high school makes little sense, since it was Obama himself who did disclose it in his memoir published 12 years ago.

Keating was one of McCain's earlier supporters, endorsing the Arizona Senator even before he officially launched his 2008 presidential bid. Keating is a member of McCain's National Campaign Committee, and serves as co-chair for various campaign groups, such as Catholics for McCain and Sportsmen for McCain.

Here's the transcript from Miller's program today:

MILLER: It's the most liberal, let's just say that. We're talking to Frank Keating, former Oklahoma Governor, John McCain supporter. Frank, let's just say, it's the most liberal. The thing that bothers me the most about all this with Barack Obama is not the -- I know he's the most liberal guy. You know, I know he's gotten this close to the White House and I know most people don't realize he's probably the most liberal senator we have. The thing that bothers me the most is I recognize the obfuscation and the smoke and mirrors as Clinton-esque. When I hear him reduce Ayers to "this is a guy who lives in my neighborhood" or Rev. Wright, "I was there 500 times and never saw him." The acts themselves don't bother me as he's starting to treat me like an idiot too when he's blowing this smoke my way. He ought to just come clean and say, "listen, I came up through Chicago, you make some errors there." I'd almost be able to absolve it more easily then.

KEATING: Well, and that's what concerns me, Dennis, because when I was in the State Senate and statehouse of my state, if someone had voted against the entire state budget because it had too much money for corrections, all of us would have, you know, strained our necks to find out who is this because that would have been a very extreme position, basically saying to a law enforcement officer as I was or my son was a state trooper, "you know, you make an arrest, you risk your life, for nothing" because we're going to make sure that person doesn't go to prison even though the laws of the state require it. So, that puzzles me. Just he ought to admit, "you know, I've got to be honest with you. I was a guy of the street. I was way to the left. I used cocaine. I voted liberally, but I'm back at the center." I mean, I understand the big picture of America. But he hasn't done that...

MILLER: He's copped to that...

KEATING: Jeremiah Wright is...

MILLER: Wait, I've got to jump in Frank. He has copped to the blow use, right? I mean, he did so in his own book he said he did blow.

KEATING: Oh yes, he did.

MILLER: Well, I'm just saying that doesn't enter this to me.

This isn't all lies. Obama admitted to drug use. That's why Dennis is saying "It doesn't enter this for me." He's already copped to it. We've got to run on truth. Obama has used drugs. He even admitted inhaling. Obama isn't some piece of perfection. He's a man running for president.

I don't even agree with everything he says or does. I don't have to, he's just my candidate for president. But I support him for what he is. And it's so easy to see right through these recent attacks...if you have eyes in your head and IQ above your ankles.

and we're listening to Dennis Miller, comic turned sports announcer turned conservative pundit when he couldn't make jokes about them any more, talk to a guy named KEATING (although not THAT keating) about Obama being a man of the streets, who equates being a left leaning liberal to cocaine use?

1) Joke commentator
2) interviewee that draws the equation: left/liberal vote = cocaine user

Does anyone else see something wrong with this picture?

Well, let's make a couple of points about these conservatives. One, aren't most supposed to be "christians"? If so, what happened to the direction to "forgive" your brother. After all, Obama IS a fellow Christian. Two, using Keating's and other's words, I guess the Apostle Paul would have been denigrated by them as well. Those of us who know the Bible know that Paul was once a persecutor of the Christians. To them, he would be considered a "terrorists" by today's standards! Three, during the 60's, many people were against the war, used drugs, and were "flower children". What happened to those people? Many are now in their 60's and 70's and are Republican! Wonder if they're trying to hide THEIR own bad habits way back then?! Fourth, by denigrating someone for behavior in their youth is a dangerous message to today's youth, in that those who are presently engaged in negative behavior may just hear the negativity of McCain's campaign and simply "give up" trying to 'get clean'! I mean, the logic might be that they might as well continue doing what they're doing since they'll STILL be denigrated later on in life if they try to get into public service. America is all about being able to pull yourself out of the gutter and live a productive, successful life! THESE pitiful conservatives would have too many remain in the gutter by their words and present deeds in this campaign!

Cindy McCain didn't use recreational drugs. Her drug use was the result of mismanaged pain control, brought about by a back condition that was eventually corrected by surgery. Obama used recreational drugs. One of the things that should be of interest to voters is who paid for Obama's drugs? According to Obama, he was already heavily in the hole for his tuition money. Did he get the money for drugs from his grandmother?

HAHAHAHAHAHA

The term "recreational drug" is a scapegoat for those "well-to-do's" who want to separate their abuse of prescription meds from those who get their fix on the streets.

A narcotic is a narcotic. There is no differentiation in definition.

LMAO@Mismanaged pain control....LMAOOOOOO

I'm gonna mismanage my glaucoma next month and prescribe myself some of Jamaica's Best under the Cindy McCain definition of "drug abuse"

Just sayin'.

Let's see... Drug Use... Ummm... Cindy McCain was not only addicted to Pain Killers... she used her position with a Charity... yes a charity to illegally accquire her drugs.

They need to take a good look in the mirror... from Associations to Anti-American organizations (AIP for Sarah Palin and her Husband Todd who was a card-carrying member), Anti-Lobbiest (McCains entire campaign is run and staffed by the very people he claims to hate), Anti-Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae (again McCain's staff were lobbiest for these organizations), Anti-Earmarks (he better talk to Palin about all her earmarks this year alone they were astronimical) and it just goes on and on...

How stupid to they think we all are???

Change??? the only "Change" that McCain could talk about is the pocket-"Change" he'll leave most Americans with after he's further destroyed our economy.

This conversation is all jibberish and makes no sense to me. What exactly are they trying to say? Has Sarah Palin been coaching them ? : )

Seriously guys, give it up. You're toast.

Obama admitted this use and said it was probably the greatest mistake he ever made. Hey, my views are liberal but anyone looking at me would maybe think I was more on the conservative sides these days. I've always tried to stay within the law. But did I experiment with drugs when I was younger? You betcha! Did I like it? Not so much. Do I do it now? No. There are probably millions of us who could cop to the same thing.

So, GOP , move back to the issues. Oh, that's right! You haven't been there because you can't win on the issues! Well, bud, you can't win on smears, either.

Cindy's drug abuse led to committing felony acts and was done as an adult, not as a teenager.

McCain's gambling is current and ongoing.

Palin's connection to the AIP is current, as well, as is her abuse-of-power investigation, and her terrible (let's face it) parenting to her second child.

We are all aware, desperate Republicans, why you are searching for such tenuous wrong-doings on Obama's part, but please humbly acknowledge the grace and dignity Obama has displayed in not shattering your glass houses.

Obama's drug use lasted at least into his twenties -- by his own account.

Okay and he admitted his mistakes, so what. How many of us have done things in our twenties that we wish we wouldn't have, but he turned his life around for the better. They can't say anything else about this man so they are just grabbing at anything they can.

I'm going to need a reference to that. I don't recall him mentioning using drugs at Columbia (in his twenties).

SO he is no longer elitist?

How refreshing.

All McCain's men and women he surrounds himself with in this campaign come from the same place:
THE GUTTER!

To quote him from previous years: "There is a place in hell reserved just for people like them"!

I AGREE! And now McCain will be joining them there.

It is well documented that Cindy's father was very much associated with gangsters -- which would mean that by association Cindy has got to be a member of the mafia.
