Former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating, a McCain campaign co-chairman, edged up to an explicitly racial attack on Barack Obama on Thursday, describing the Illinois Senator as a "guy of the street" before raising his youthful drug use.

Appearing on Dennis Miller's radio show, Keating charged that the Democratic nominee was covering up his "very extreme" record, and urged Obama to be more honest with Americans. "He ought to admit," Keating said, "'You know, I've got to be honest with you. I was a guy of the street. I was way to the left. I used cocaine. I voted liberally, but I'm back at the center.'"

Keating began to address Obama's former pastor Jeremiah Wright -- a topic that John McCain himself has said should be off-limits -- but Miller interrupted him to return to the discussion of cocaine.

Listen to the audio here.

The criticism is the latest in a spate of increasingly aggressive attacks from the McCain-Palin camp.

It's unclear what Keating meant by "a guy of the street," but his assertion that Obama should "admit" his brief drug use in high school makes little sense, since it was Obama himself who did disclose it in his memoir published 12 years ago.

Keating was one of McCain's earlier supporters, endorsing the Arizona Senator even before he officially launched his 2008 presidential bid. Keating is a member of McCain's National Campaign Committee, and serves as co-chair for various campaign groups, such as Catholics for McCain and Sportsmen for McCain.

Here's the transcript from Miller's program today:

MILLER: It's the most liberal, let's just say that. We're talking to Frank Keating, former Oklahoma Governor, John McCain supporter. Frank, let's just say, it's the most liberal. The thing that bothers me the most about all this with Barack Obama is not the -- I know he's the most liberal guy. You know, I know he's gotten this close to the White House and I know most people don't realize he's probably the most liberal senator we have. The thing that bothers me the most is I recognize the obfuscation and the smoke and mirrors as Clinton-esque. When I hear him reduce Ayers to "this is a guy who lives in my neighborhood" or Rev. Wright, "I was there 500 times and never saw him." The acts themselves don't bother me as he's starting to treat me like an idiot too when he's blowing this smoke my way. He ought to just come clean and say, "listen, I came up through Chicago, you make some errors there." I'd almost be able to absolve it more easily then.

KEATING: Well, and that's what concerns me, Dennis, because when I was in the State Senate and statehouse of my state, if someone had voted against the entire state budget because it had too much money for corrections, all of us would have, you know, strained our necks to find out who is this because that would have been a very extreme position, basically saying to a law enforcement officer as I was or my son was a state trooper, "you know, you make an arrest, you risk your life, for nothing" because we're going to make sure that person doesn't go to prison even though the laws of the state require it. So, that puzzles me. Just he ought to admit, "you know, I've got to be honest with you. I was a guy of the street. I was way to the left. I used cocaine. I voted liberally, but I'm back at the center." I mean, I understand the big picture of America. But he hasn't done that...

MILLER: He's copped to that...

KEATING: Jeremiah Wright is...

MILLER: Wait, I've got to jump in Frank. He has copped to the blow use, right? I mean, he did so in his own book he said he did blow.

KEATING: Oh yes, he did.

MILLER: Well, I'm just saying that doesn't enter this to me.

I'm a little disappointed that some of us want to cry "racist" so damn much. The fact that Barack wasn't like Sharpton or Jackson was one of reasons I liked him so much and got behind him. It seems that we might be getting hypersensitive and deperately clawing at anything that might pay off in the short term.

All these old men of Yesterday from the republicans seem to have is a campaign of slurs, dirty person attacks to throw against Barack Obama, anything rather than Policy and telling us about the last 8 Bush Republican Years! - what they don't seem to see or want to see at all is that both McCain and Palin both have lots more Skeletons! in their own closet, but that is politics of The Past "My Friends" and that is all that McCain knows - We want CHANGE! and that will never come with McCain.

what makes me laugh is that for every single questionable association McCain/Palin and the republicans raise about Sen. Obama McCain/Palin are revealed to have 5 to 10 times worse associations.

anytime the Mccain campaign has accused Sen. Obama of something the truth comes out and it is not as bad as the republicans have distorted things to have been and McCain/Palin end up having done worse by 10 fold

All of these attacks say more about Republicans and that they'll do anything at all to win than they say about Obama. The Republicans don't seem to understand that these days, one of the main reasons they manage to get elected, when they do, is because people don't know so much about them.

Why are they so afraid of Obama? They didn't treat Kerry or Gore half as badly as they are Obama.

Probably because they realize that Obama is a stronger candidate than Kerry or Gore.

Things have got to be pretty bad when the best McCain can do is call Obama "Street." You know, Barack Obama, the Harvard grad, President of the Harvard Law Review, State Senator, and overall great family guy, all of which, I might add, John McCain is not (except Senator, which he brags about incessantly). McCain had a daddy, who had a daddy who were lifers in the military, so they lived off the country, as has McCain, until he left his wife and married a wealthy one.

Which would I rather have running this broken down country? Let me see, a guy who might have some street sense or a guy who doesn't know how many houses his wife owns, I'll take the guy with the brain, even if he did enrich it at Harvard.

1. If independent voters didn't care about Clinton smoking the doobie and didn't care about Bush's habits with drugs before his being born again, then I doubt this will change many minds in this case...in fact, the record seems to show that whichever campaign/surrogate raises the other candidate's adolescent drug habits is a losing ticket.

2. I'm confused now, though. I thought the McCain campaign didn't like Obama because he is "elitist". But now he's "a guy off the street"?

The density of doublethink spewed from the mouths of Republicans losing is like watching a dog tangling itself on its leash.

This may be a good time to remember that Cindy McCain was addicted to drugs and even stole them from her own charity. The following link is in defence of Michelle Obama, but maybe it should be used to describe Cindy McCain as "A GAL OF THE STREETS" if that label should be applied to all who use drugs.
http://www.236.com/news/2008/06/13/236_remembers_7140.php

I don't recall Barack being accused of stealing drugs. Also, Cindy was charged as required by law, but Cindy is rich and has a husband with influence in the state of Arizona, so she got off without any charges or jail time. "...and the possible manipulation of the criminal justice system by her husband and his cohorts. " http://www.salon.com/news/feature/1999/10/18/drugs/

I'm an Arizona resident and love my state and I'm voting for Senator Obama.

"The economic times are the reason our numbers are down," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, one of Sen. McCain's best friends. "I want John to have a positive approach to solving America's problems, but John has to show that there's nothing mainstream about Sen. Obama."

Enough said, Ameicans are hurting and this is all McCain can do.

HE IS RAISING MCCAINS DRUG USE? Marvelous. When you look at that guys uncontrollable patter of insane behaviour, much of it must be drug induced.
