I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Smiling but showing the wear of the past twenty months of campaigning, Michelle Obama made an appearance on The Daily Show last night, where Jon Stewart immediately remarked on how strange it was that after such a long campaign and such thorough public vetting, "This woman from Alaska, Sarah Palin, wants to know who you are."

Stewart asked, "Do you ever think to yourself...who are you?" "That does cross your mind," replied Obama.

The two discussed the growing intensity of the campaign rhetoric, centering on Barack Obama's past. Michelle Obama noted that the grueling primary process had already brought thorough scrutiny, and more or less confirmed that they would not be going on "family ski vacation" with Bill Ayers. Though who knows, maybe if Bill Ayers had gotten involved in some healthy activities as a young man, no one would be worried about this stuff today.

Obama confessed that she's tuned out some of the media conversation, saying, "I've stopped reading and watching a lot of stuff." "So you are a lot like Sarah Palin," Stewart joked. But Sarah Palin reads everything! All the newspapers! Crazy McCain oppo! Starbucks coffee cups! She's like a Roomba for the "verbage."

Actually, in Palin's defense, Michelle Obama mispronounces the word "pundit," as well.

Obama went on to say that she enjoyed the debate, despite the pressure of having to make a Daily Show appearance. "He very clearly believes you observe him with an objective eye," Stewart prompted. Obama replied, "I put myself in the position of a voter, and I tell him, if I don't believe you, I'm not voting for you, buddy." But, lest you think there's some fence-sitting, she did declare herself to be an "Obama momma."

Michelle Obama also tamped down the notion that there's any sort of personal friction between the candidates and their families. "I think some of that gets overanalyzed...we don't have time for long conversations, but [Cindy McCain is] very cordial...we have to be careful about all of this, because some of it is theater. And the reality is, Barack has tremendous respect for Senator McCain."

# of interviews Michelle Obama has done with the media in the last 2 days: 2

# of interviews Sarah Palin has done with the media in the last 5 weeks: 3 (ABC, CBS, FOX... - did I miss any?)

Michelle Obama handled both interveiws with such class & grace - that is the woman she is.

I guess McCain is doing his part for the environment - he & Palin & Cindy travel to all engagement & speak together.... Even I trust my 4th grade students to go to the restroom on their own....

I just read a Google article about her Larry King show appearance. What an intelligent, grounded, graceful, loving, and sharp woman! She'll be an excellent role model for girls and young women throughout America. I'm an older mother (now grandmother) who chose a young black pediatrician for my three children's care 30 years ago because she was skilled, kind, approachable, and provided a double-whammy of a role model: black and female! I got a "twofer", and I've always been happy that I chose her to care for my most valuable treasures.

I was an early contributor to Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign and she had my primary election vote, but I had no trouble supporting Senator Obama by contributing to his campaign when he became the Democratic candidate. I got my "absentee" ballot in the mail yesterday, and I'm going to vote it on Saturday and send it right in. I want my vote to count for Obama/Biden '08! My kids and their spouses will be voting for Obama/Biden too; five of us in California and two in Florida. I plan to wake up a very happy woman ready to greet a new era on November 5th!

I agree with you on everything. I hope you are right about Nov. 5th because if the unthinkable happens, I may be suicidal.

Yes, Barack , I'll say it to your face. You have shown true class, dignity and strength.

You have kept focus on the issues that concern most of us. You have demonstrated that politics need not always be petty and vindictive. Thank you.

I didn't see this show but saw her on Larry King. What a contract in the media yesterday; a composed, coherent Michelle Obama versus a shrill, trembling Cindy McCain.

No trophy wife for Barack! Michelle has shown herself to be everything that needed in a First Lady. She can do so much than stand there and look pretty (which she is!).

I first heard Ms. Obama speak about a year ago during a television interview (sorry, forget which one). She came across as very bright, but hostile. In the intervening time she has become more gracious, while at the same time still exuding her individuality. I do think she would be a good first-lady if Obama is elected.

I agree that she will be a great First Lady when Obama is elected, but wonder if perhaps you have become more perceptive/more open in your assessment because to many of us she has always been both bright and gracious.

Correct. I was voicing my impression of her, not yours.

Michelle Obama has such grace and composure a wonderful woman, wife and mother. Just to note here as I think back over the course of this campaign I have never seen the McCains exchange the sweetness and affection that I've seen from Sen. Obama and Michelle. What's up with that and they look strained when they have to touch each other for a hug and for John McCain it appears almost as an after thought.

A lower middle income beauty as First Lady? I don't recall THAT happening in the last ... wait... ever!
What a decent change from the aristocracy that rules now.
