If Gov. Sarah Palin, by John McCain's estimation, "knows more about energy than probably anyone in the United States of America," then why is she getting such basic facts about our nation's energy production wrong?

At a townhall event in Wisconsin on Thursday, Palin was asked by a concerned questioner whether it was true that the United States was shipping 75 percent of its Alaskan oil overseas. She responded by proclaiming it impossible, since Congress had put strict bans on the amount of oil and gas that America could export.

Not so. As the Associated Press reported:

No Alaska oil has been exported since 2004, and little if any since 2000, according to the Energy Information Administration and the Congressional Research Service.

And Congress has never imposed outright bans on oil exports. Congress prohibited exports of Alaska oil in 1973 when the Alaska oil pipeline was built. But that ban was lifted in 1996 when there were large volumes of Alaska oil coming down from the North Slope and U.S. demand was soft.

The Alaska ban has never been reinstated.

Unfortunately, for Palin, this was not merely an inconsequential misstatement but rather another in a series of errors when it comes to discussing what is supposed to be her policy strength. For a while on the trail, the Alaska Governor was fond of declaring that her job - as head of state - "has been to oversee nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of oil and gas."

That too was incorrect. As the Washington Post's Fact Checker noted:

Alaska is the ninth largest energy supplier in the United States, accounting for a modest 3.5 percent share of the nation's total energy production...

... After the non-partisan Factcheck.org pointed out Palin's error in her interview with Gibson, the Alaska governor revised her claim somewhat, limiting it to oil and gas. But data compiled by the Energy Information Administration contradict her claim that she oversees "nearly 20 percent" of oil and gas production in the country. According to authoritative EIA data, Alaska accounted for just 7.4 percent of total U.S. oil and gas production in 2005.

One thing Palin did get right was her assertion that the U.S. does not ship three-quarters of its Alaska-drilled oil to other countries. The amount, in actuality, is quite minimal (523 million barrels of petroleum product), especially compared with the amount that the country imports (roughly 4 billion barrels).

If Gov. Sarah Palin, by John McCain's estimation, "knows more about energy than probably anyone in the United States of America," then why is she getting such basic facts about our nation's energy pro...

Why would any of our natural resources be exported for any reason... oh, I get it... money. Somebody is willing to pay more than we are willing to pay.

We have no natural resource I know of that is exportable, save American ingenuity.

Perhaps we need to consider enforcing the Monroe Doctrine, or reconsidering isolationism.

Palin's energy thesis is based on the premise the earth's center is a creamy crude oil nougat.

What's discouraging about all this is that serious adults feel compelled to spend time and energy rebutting an airhead like Palin.

It is the only style worn by a pentacostal bible church woman. I remember thinking how odd it looked on her the day McSame announced her saying, "She's not from these parts" .When I found out she was a pentacostal it all made sense.

And she dyes it that color...artifical intelligence! Ya Betcha! What kind of gel does Palin use on her hair?? Moose, of course! What did Palin say to Cheney when asked to go rabbit hunting?? Your plane or mine? Did you hear that Palin is pro-life?? Only until they turn 18, then they can be cannon fodder. Why is Palin so fond of the term "joe Six-pack'? That's the only way she can get Toddster in the sack.

The Ultimate Challenge:

Sarah Palin on "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?"

What are the chances she will ask to see the questions ahead of time?

Wait.... we will make it easier...

We will give her the answers and turn off the mics of the 5th graders.

What are the chances she will still get the answers right?

hmmm.... okay, nevermind....

Lets just book her on Sesame Street.

Big Bird: "ID"
Bert: "IOT"
Sarah: "IDIOT"

what a load... I mean seriously, even myself, that knows as much about oil as putting gas in my tank knows that the majority of the oil from Alaska is shipped to Japan.

My 18 year old son last month stated that he knew the majority of the oil is shipped to Japan. I asked where he learned this, and he said "School".

This woman is a meatball.

There were legitimate ENVIRONMENT concerns which he might have felt unmet.......especially given the serious earthquake Alaska experience in 1969!

Without context "dadd"s factoid is merely a flacid attempt at an attack phrase???

This may indeed be nitpicking, but I do fail to see how she could be an "expert" on energy and energy policy after only 18 months on the job. Surely there is more to energy than that, and surely there are people who have been dealing with it longer than she has.

Sarah's a "fast study." Few questions regarding policy, but quick to repeat the McCain talking points. And she likes to use "zingers," even if they're out-of-context and awkwardly inappropriate.

I never thought I'd say it, but I'm beginning to feel sad for McCain. I don't believe his campaign has gone in the direction he wanted, and now he cannot control it.

Nitpicking: to criticize by focusing on inconsequential details.

Sen. McCain, Sen. Obama, and Sen. Biden have made confident assertions and been wrong - sometimes very wrong and sometimes only a little wrong.

For instance:

McCain misstated his own health care plan, saying he’d give a $5,000 tax credit to “every American” His plan actually would provide only $2,500 per individual, or $5,000 for couples and families. He also misstated Obama’s health care plan, claiming it would levy fines on “small businesses” that fail to provide health insurance. Actually, Obama’s plan exempts “small businesses.”

Obama moved the invention of the computer up by more than a century:

Obama: The same way the computer was originally invented by a bunch of government scientists who were trying to figure out, for defense purposes, how to communicate, we've got to understand that this is a national security issue, as well. But ENIAC was not actually the first computer. That distinction belongs to the difference engine, a mechanical computer invented in 1822 by the British mathematician Charles Babbage. And even Babbage was drawing on earlier work, such as the calculating machine built in 1671 by the German philosopher Gottfried Liebniz.

Biden wrongly claimed that McCain “voted the exact same way” as Obama on the budget bill that contained an increase on singles making as little as $42,000 a year. McCain voted against it. Biden was referring to an amendment that didn't address taxes at that income level.

Mistakes from FactCheck.org

Educated Derelict,

I very much appreciate FactCheck.org as well, and want everyone to stick to real, 'truthy' facts. However, I saw/heard the same 'computer' comment and immediately recognized it for mis-speak. Not trying to explain it away, mind you! I figure on Obama making far fewer mis-speaks than Biden, and certainly fewer than the queen of obfuscation and outright gobblety-gook, Palin. But it is quite clear from the context of the quote that in the rush of the moment, being urged to move on, computer slipped out instead of 'internet'. I am surprised he did make the correction and FactCheck did not also. That being said, I am perfectly willing to give Palin or anyone a few mis-speaks made in the rush of the moment. Willfully, speaking mis-truths is a little different.

There I go mis-speaking myself. My sentence should read "I am surprised he did NOT make the correction".

PBS has an online poll posted asking if Sarah Palin is
qualified. Apparently the right wing knew about this
in advance and are flooding the voting with YES votes.

The poll will be reported on PBS and picked up by
mainstream media. It can influence undecided voters
in swing states.

Please do two things -- takes 20 seconds.

1) Click on link and vote yourself.

Here's the link:
http://www.pbs.org/now/polls/poll-435.html

2) Then send this to every single Obama-Biden voter
you know, and urge them to vote and pass it on.

The last thing we need is PBS saying their viewers
think Sarah Palin is qualified.

Thank you - I voted and the pop up screen revealed that it is 49%/49%. That cannot possibly be correct? Otherwise, Bill has a whole slew of right wingnuts watching. It boggles the mind.
