Sarah Palin

If Gov. Sarah Palin, by John McCain's estimation, "knows more about energy than probably anyone in the United States of America," then why is she getting such basic facts about our nation's energy production wrong?

At a townhall event in Wisconsin on Thursday, Palin was asked by a concerned questioner whether it was true that the United States was shipping 75 percent of its Alaskan oil overseas. She responded by proclaiming it impossible, since Congress had put strict bans on the amount of oil and gas that America could export.

Not so. As the Associated Press reported:

No Alaska oil has been exported since 2004, and little if any since 2000, according to the Energy Information Administration and the Congressional Research Service.

And Congress has never imposed outright bans on oil exports. Congress prohibited exports of Alaska oil in 1973 when the Alaska oil pipeline was built. But that ban was lifted in 1996 when there were large volumes of Alaska oil coming down from the North Slope and U.S. demand was soft.

The Alaska ban has never been reinstated.

Unfortunately, for Palin, this was not merely an inconsequential misstatement but rather another in a series of errors when it comes to discussing what is supposed to be her policy strength. For a while on the trail, the Alaska Governor was fond of declaring that her job - as head of state - "has been to oversee nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of oil and gas."

That too was incorrect. As the Washington Post's Fact Checker noted:

Alaska is the ninth largest energy supplier in the United States, accounting for a modest 3.5 percent share of the nation's total energy production...

... After the non-partisan Factcheck.org pointed out Palin's error in her interview with Gibson, the Alaska governor revised her claim somewhat, limiting it to oil and gas. But data compiled by the Energy Information Administration contradict her claim that she oversees "nearly 20 percent" of oil and gas production in the country. According to authoritative EIA data, Alaska accounted for just 7.4 percent of total U.S. oil and gas production in 2005.

One thing Palin did get right was her assertion that the U.S. does not ship three-quarters of its Alaska-drilled oil to other countries. The amount, in actuality, is quite minimal (523 million barrels of petroleum product), especially compared with the amount that the country imports (roughly 4 billion barrels).

If Gov. Sarah Palin, by John McCain's estimation, "knows more about energy than probably anyone in the United States of America," then why is she getting such basic facts about our nation's energy pro...

Exactly, if she is top of the field in oil, why has she not already been swept up to lead the field. Wouldn't you want the best and brightest for the committees? We would have heard of her prior to 5 - 6 weeks ago if she truly were THAT knowledgeable in the oil industry. If she's the best we have to offer, we're screwed.

Sam -- Dude:

these numbers do not add up this requires better investigation -- where is Alaska's oil going if less than 75% of it makes it's was to the lower 48?

also that last statement "The amount, in actuality, is quite minimal (523 million barrels of petroleum product), " "especially compared with the amount that the country imports (roughly 4 billion barrels)." THIS IS COMPARING APPLES TO BANNANAS - because 523 million barrels are exported from
Alaska it is considered minimal because there is 4 billion being imported -- WHY THE HECK IS ANY OF THE ALASKAN OIL BEING EXPORTED?

this rebuttal was done by someone at fact-check who does not deal with energy issues as a career

Most of Alaska's oil is exported to Canada, refined there and shipped back as gasoline.

She knows NOTHING.

Nah, it's going to Japan.
Oil is on the WORLD market. We sell it as an export.
Also, the quantity of the oil means NOTHING. Refineries are at 100% of capacity. If a refinery can only process a million barrels 100 more barrels means nothing.

It's not a matter of DRILL BABY DRILL. It's REFINE BABY REFINE. There is plenty of oil, we just don't have the capacity to refine it.

My husband works for a refinery and he says they have stopped buying Alaskan oil as it is too expensive. Believe it or not, pre 9/11 most of the oil came from Iraq with the oil for food program. Now none of it comes from Iraq and it was cheap oil.

I am wondering what qualifies her to be a so called "expert" in energy. She signed contracts that were put in front of her to sign, evidently. They ought to expose her energy qualifications like they did her foreign policy experience, which consisted to giving tours of the ice sculptures to a handful of foreign folks at the winter carnival. A total of 12 hours of foreign policy experience.

Really, what makes her an expert. Is she a geologist? Is she a petroleum engineer? Does she have a background in finance? Noooo. She ran a small town in Alaska into 20 million in debt for a sports stadium. That doesn't account for much expertise. I wonder who she ran against. Was he a serial killer?

Setting aside politics for a brief second, Palin's claim, supported by McCain, That Palin "knows more about energy than probably anyone in the United States of America," is breathtakingly false. The type of mentality that would make such a blanketly false statement is beyond my comprehension. This isn't mere resume pufferey, but a lie so obvious that surely they cannot expect any body that has graduated from high school to believe. I can only imagine the legions of oil and gas geologists, geology professors, oil and gas drillers, oil and gas CEO's, not to mention T Boone Pickens and his peers, and people that have served on government energy committees for decades, think aboutthis total falsehood. Gee, I even bet that Larry Hagmen, just from the scripts of "Dallas" has absorbed more about oil and gas business than Palin knows from her 2 years stint as Govenor of AK. This incredible statement should have orever destroyed any trust or credibilty of any voter re: McCain and Palin.

I am working towards a PhD in Energy and Mineral Engineering. To be honest, it is a very humbling experience. My face cringes every time I hear someone call her an "Expert on Energy". How can people be so stupid?!!

Sarah Palin: a traitor to the United States. Why? Let's ask her husband why he was a member of AIP until recently. AIP is an organization dedicated to the indepence of Alaska and its breaking away from the US. Its organizer and originator hated the United States with a passion and even said the the fires of hell were glacial in their comparision to his hatred for the United States. Where does Sarah Palin fit in? She goes to the conventions of this truly patriotic party and guess what? Although her husband was a member of AIP until recently she has attended the last two conventions and will be giving a taped cheerleading speech for all her fellow traitors for 2008. This is the women that may inherit the nuclear football if McCain becomes president. Every man, woman and child of the US must stand up and block the radical and traitorous ambitions of this woman. The very integrity and survival of our country depends on it. McCain may have thought this women was going to help him but even I cannot think that he realized the depth of subversion that exists in this woman and her husband. America beware: a clear and present danger exists to the integrity of America at this moment.

I used to joke with my students that someone was "Dumb as a bag of hammers. Not even those fancy, smart hammers, either. These are really dumb hammers."

I used the line when describing a story that I had heard on the news or something. This wasn't directed at any of them. LOL.

Unfortunately, Palin should never have been in public office. She is ignorant in the matters of intellect but pathologically motivated when it comes to seeking power at any cost. She is a good student of the past almost 8 years when this sort of dynamic seemed institutionalized. She is, in a word, dangerous for the United States and the world during a time of tremendous complexity that requires enormous intelligence, native insight and humanity: all which this Palin creature lacks. Is she a mere product of our Bushian dysfunction in government? I think so. Still, I believe that if you love this country and take a few steps back to look at the big picture, you will work feverishly to insure Obama and Biden's timely election. Our national heart, body, and soul will be broken if not.

Ironic. Her program of paying royalties to the Alaskan population for oil production borders on SOCIALISM! Would she advocate that for the entire US population if elected? I think not.

It doens't border on socialism, it is socialism. Just what the Republicans have said about anybody that gets a handout frorm the Government without earning it; just like Bush's stimulous check (even though EVERYBODY kept saying it was a "tax refund", which it was not). So....then what, who are the REAL socialists ??
