John Weaver, John McCain's former top strategist, says the Republican candidate is making both a moral and a a tactical mistake by letting abusive hecklers have free rein at rallies:

"People need to understand, for moral reasons and the protection of our civil society, the differences with Senator Obama are ideological, based on clear differences on policy and a lack of experience compared to Senator McCain," Weaver said. "And from a purely practical political vantage point, please find me a swing voter, an undecided independent, or a torn female voter that finds an angry mob mentality attractive."

One of Washington's longest serving political hands expressed bewilderment and fright over the vitriol coming from McCain-Palin rallies, saying that the anger of the crowds could lead to violence.

"One of the most striking things we've seen in the last few day, we have seen it at the Palin rallies and we saw it at the McCain rally today," said David Gergen, appearing on Anderson Cooper 360 Thursday evening. "And we saw it to a considerable degree during the rescue package legislation. There is a free-floating sort of whipping-around anger that could really lead to some violence. And I think we're not far from that."

Gergen's remark came hours after John McCain and Sarah Palin held a rally in Wisconsin that saw attendees pleading with them to go on the attack against Barack Obama over his past associations and "socialistic" behavior. Earlier in the week crowd members at other McCain-Palin events have screamed out that Obama is a terrorist, has committed treason, and should be killed.

Watch:

Questioner: I'm mad. I'm really mad. And what's gonna surprise you, it's not the economy. It's the socialists taking over our country. [applause] Sit down, I'm not done! Thank you. Let me finish, please. [laughter]

McCain: Excuse me. [laughter]

Questioner: Thank you. I think its so important in today's country to see what we are missing and what's really going on. When you have an Obama, Pelosi, and the rest of the hooligans up there gonna run this country, we gotta have our head examined. It's time that you two are representing us, and we are mad! So go get em! [applause, chants of USA!]

McCain: Well, I think I got the message. [laughter] Could I just say, the gentleman is right.

"I really worry when we get people -- when you get the kind of rhetoric that you're getting at these rallies now," said Gergen. "I think it's really imperative the candidates try to calm people down."

Former McCain supporter Frank Schaeffer, writing Friday in the Baltimore Sun, concurred:

John McCain: In 2000, as a lifelong Republican, I worked to get you elected instead of George W. Bush. In return, you wrote an endorsement of one of my books about military service. You seemed to be a man who put principle ahead of mere political gain.

You have changed. You have a choice: Go down in history as a decent senator and an honorable military man with many successes, or go down in history as the latest abettor of right-wing extremist hate.

The Washington Post's Dan Balz warned that McCain is headed down the same dirty path George W. Bush took in the 2000 South Carolina primary.

"McCain's tactics are over the line, with no restraint in sight, and threaten to provoke reactions among partisans on both sides that will continue to escalate."

...

I was in contact over the last 24 hours with another veteran of recent Republican presidential campaigns and asked, on a not-for-attribution basis, whether he believed McCain's campaign is taking a big risk with its negative turn. "Yes," this strategist replied. "Big mistake. If this stuff mattered, then why didn't they raise it five months ago. Sad."

"I'm angry because the people are angry" (JMC) "I am impatient for you"(SP). They ascribe all their own bad tendencies to their messed up constituents. They won't even be responsible for their own character traits.

Let the bigots yell. Only by granting them the same free speech rights we all have can we allow them to expose themselves as intolerant, uneducated, unenlightened, and unAmerican. I think nothing could have done more than these rallies to advance Obama's rationality, and turn moderate, rational people away from McCain, demagoguery, and hate.

Palin blames the MSM and implores the crowd to ask the questions to the MSM.

The truth is that the MSM is begging to talk to Palin, but she refuses.

It is an indication of McCain's poor judgement that he didn't vet his VP pick sufficiently to asertain that she doesn't have the suficient skills to be interviewed by the MSM with out looking bad.

In this video she uses her "frustration" as the excuse of her poor performances in interviews. I guess the excuse of the "gotcha questions" was finally seen by the McCain campian as too ridiculous to fly. The new one is not any better.

I am mad too, ie angry. I am angry at the evangelists who voted for GW Bush and who will vote for McCain because of homosexuality and abortion. You folks have gotten us into an endless war, into torture and into a depression that likely will go on for 20 years. Thanks a lot. Be mad and accuse Obama of being a terrorist, being a socialist, being an arab, etc. You are so far out to lunch I can't even expect you to see reason in this situation. Just get out of the way and let the voters who can see reason, who can see the gravity of the situation, who can see where the morality really is in the situation go to the ballot boxes and save this country.
And to those voters, I am please get to the polls and help our country do the right thing, help our country right it's course with regard to justice and peace and the economy. We had the greatest country on earth, lets bring that back.

I have a question about the whole anti Socialism thing. McCain recently has said ( during the last debate, I believe) that when he is POTUS, he will "Buy up all the bad loans so people can stay in their houses"

Isnt that a form of Socialism?

Yep - & worse : It's total trickery, as the mortgages aren't worth their face value - people will have "better rates" on upside down loans - pure trickery.

So basically what that old wingnut racist did was not even ask a question? He just called Obama and Pelosi 'hooligans' and got all pissy and made his own little stump speech. I can't even figure out what Palin was trying to say, does she blather on like that all the time? WTF? "When will we be asked and when will we get the answers?" Did she really say that? My gawd, that video is pure comedy gold.

Hilarious.

This clip of redneck opinions didn't make me laugh; it just made me sad.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:36 PM on 10/12/2008

Why is this guy a redneck? Because he doesn't agree with you? Do you think European-style socialism, or any socialism for that matter, is the way to go? I don't. Free markets work. Handing people money for nothing does not work. It just demoralizes people to the point that they are no longer motivated and lack of motivation has turned our inner cities into war zones that look eerily like Iraq, which I visited on a tour of duty in 2005. By calling this angry man a redneck, you simply dismiss him without challenging his opinion. Such an elitist attitude is the very definition of divisive hatred. Good work.

Go to BarackObama.com and give money. I give $5.00 a week, yes $5.00 a week. It easy and it helps.

McCain/Palin's privileged treatment by the traditional American values centered Christi/Islamo conservative media is beyond the Pale. Why has no one in the mainstream media questioned McCain's time at "The Plantation" in Vietnam, why has no one questioned McCain's association with Roger Pearson (Fascist) while they were fellows and cohorts at the World Anti-Communist League, why has no one questioned McCain on his relationship with Hate promulgators and antisemitic Reverends, Rod Parsley or John Hagee, why has no one questioned McCain's association with the convicted defrauder Charles Humphrey Keating, Why has no one questioned McCain's association with Raefello Fiorelli (criminal opportunist) and convicted defrauder.

I can tell you why in one simple quote by a very wise man years ago. "When Fascism comes to America it will be draped in the Flag and carrying the cross" Sinclair Lewis. Well ladies and gentleman that day has arrived and it is being heralded by the Christi/Islamo centered Republican Evangelical Party; if you even remotely care about democracy in the US you better seriously reconsider any intention of supporting the McCain/Palin ticket.

P.S. someone in the media needs to do the right thing and seriously question Gov. Palin on her "Abuse of Power" tendencies and her resentment of Supreme Court decision and detestation of women.

for the American media apparatus - consider the following "During times of War the media gives out instruction, not information" Joseph Goebbels - please don't let it happen here

And when Huey Long was asked, "Will Fascism ever come to America?" He replied, "Yes, of course - but we'll call it 'anti-fascism."

Fascism is national socialism. It simply took the Marxist template and applied it to a nationalist movement. Other than its nationalist focus, fascism is a product of the left and has nothing to do with conservatism. It's always nice to see distortions continued.

In recent days, dozens of political leaders of both parties, editorialists, columnists and even conservative commentators have expressed concern over these McCain-Palin tactics.

It is instructive, then, that Senator McCain chose not to respond to these warnings, waiting instead for a black politician to say essentially the same thing.

What should we make of that tactic?

McCain and Palin are running the dirtiest, sleeziest campaign in American History. They have run out of ammunition as if they ever had any and are resorting to no-nonsense trash. Trashy people fall in line with them. If that were a black man screaming out at a rally for Obama saying "kill him" or "treason"he would be arrested on the spot. G O D help america, because the Repugs have destroyed this country. But Bush stole the 2000 election with a vengeance and the stupid Repugs put him back in office in 2004 to take this country to hell. Well I hope those Repugs have been taught a hard lesson. Bush said on the evening news in 2000 that he was going after the man that tried to" kill his diddy"(daddy). By george he did it with the help of greedy selfish Repugs. I hope all of the Repugs are reaping what they've sown.
