John Weaver, John McCain's former top strategist, says the Republican candidate is making both a moral and a a tactical mistake by letting abusive hecklers have free rein at rallies:

"People need to understand, for moral reasons and the protection of our civil society, the differences with Senator Obama are ideological, based on clear differences on policy and a lack of experience compared to Senator McCain," Weaver said. "And from a purely practical political vantage point, please find me a swing voter, an undecided independent, or a torn female voter that finds an angry mob mentality attractive."

One of Washington's longest serving political hands expressed bewilderment and fright over the vitriol coming from McCain-Palin rallies, saying that the anger of the crowds could lead to violence.

"One of the most striking things we've seen in the last few day, we have seen it at the Palin rallies and we saw it at the McCain rally today," said David Gergen, appearing on Anderson Cooper 360 Thursday evening. "And we saw it to a considerable degree during the rescue package legislation. There is a free-floating sort of whipping-around anger that could really lead to some violence. And I think we're not far from that."

Gergen's remark came hours after John McCain and Sarah Palin held a rally in Wisconsin that saw attendees pleading with them to go on the attack against Barack Obama over his past associations and "socialistic" behavior. Earlier in the week crowd members at other McCain-Palin events have screamed out that Obama is a terrorist, has committed treason, and should be killed.

Watch:

Questioner: I'm mad. I'm really mad. And what's gonna surprise you, it's not the economy. It's the socialists taking over our country. [applause] Sit down, I'm not done! Thank you. Let me finish, please. [laughter]

McCain: Excuse me. [laughter]

Questioner: Thank you. I think its so important in today's country to see what we are missing and what's really going on. When you have an Obama, Pelosi, and the rest of the hooligans up there gonna run this country, we gotta have our head examined. It's time that you two are representing us, and we are mad! So go get em! [applause, chants of USA!]

McCain: Well, I think I got the message. [laughter] Could I just say, the gentleman is right.

"I really worry when we get people -- when you get the kind of rhetoric that you're getting at these rallies now," said Gergen. "I think it's really imperative the candidates try to calm people down."

Former McCain supporter Frank Schaeffer, writing Friday in the Baltimore Sun, concurred:

John McCain: In 2000, as a lifelong Republican, I worked to get you elected instead of George W. Bush. In return, you wrote an endorsement of one of my books about military service. You seemed to be a man who put principle ahead of mere political gain.

You have changed. You have a choice: Go down in history as a decent senator and an honorable military man with many successes, or go down in history as the latest abettor of right-wing extremist hate.

The Washington Post's Dan Balz warned that McCain is headed down the same dirty path George W. Bush took in the 2000 South Carolina primary.

"McCain's tactics are over the line, with no restraint in sight, and threaten to provoke reactions among partisans on both sides that will continue to escalate."

...

I was in contact over the last 24 hours with another veteran of recent Republican presidential campaigns and asked, on a not-for-attribution basis, whether he believed McCain's campaign is taking a big risk with its negative turn. "Yes," this strategist replied. "Big mistake. If this stuff mattered, then why didn't they raise it five months ago. Sad."

AND the Alaskan economy. Citizens of that state receive dividends from the sale of natural resources that they collectively own. What could be more socialistic than that?

I apologize if in any way I offended the moderators. I do not advocate, support or condone the organization documented in the link provided previously. The point that I am trying to make is that I don’t believe young Americans under the age of 50 really know what propaganda is and what it does nor how it is created. The Military Industrial Complex controls what we feel and think. Music and the arts are manipulated to produce opinions which fall in line with the party platform. Angry mobs have been responsible for everything from smashing Beatles records, to burning crosses, to fire hosing people marching peacefully. Angry mobs have shot students in Ohio and wreaked havoc in whatever city wins a championship. Angry mobs burn witches and books, and can murder millions. After the liberation of Auschwitz, General Eisenhower forced German citizens to tour the camps, to clean up the bodies for mass burial. Many vomited. Father was 10 and watched his entire family be murdered. He told me what an angry mob is capable of doing. Fascism did not die with Hitler and Mussolini. Fascism surrounds us. Many of the same corporations, banks and families that supported that horrible mob of angry people still survive. Those of you under 50, and there are millions upon millions of you, need to educate yourselves. Do not let this Great Nation be ruled by the mob.
Thank you for the opportunity to post this follow-up. Good luck, Mel Goetia

I think the comments from this strategist are sage advice for McCain. If he is really able to get back that old McCain-Maverick image he will need to continue telling the crowds that engaging in any behavior that demoralizes Obama is un-American and will not be tolerated. Unfortunately it seems the crowds are understanding of the polls and are very scared to have an African-American as the first President thus looking to say and do anything to prevent that from happening. The inside of McCain's camp must know already that these tactics do not win with independents who are the last undecided individuals left. The only way to have a chance now is to win on the issues and not turn off those who haven't made their minds up yet for whatever reason.

Hello to all commentators,

All the commercials, pundits, gaffes, personal attacks, and the MSM will not dictate the outcome of this election. THE GROUND GAME IS WHERE ELECTIONS ARE WON, AND LOST!

Before you go to the next left leaning article to comment on, or right leaning article to start an argument with a repug (which will no doubt end with them calling you an unpatriotic socialist wimp) I suggest that you get in the game.

Yes you can . Just go into your nearest campaign office. You can find those offices at www.barackobama.com.
I have met at least 2 Europeans who help out . One of them flew into the country SOLELY for the purpose of helping Obama get elected in America!!!!! (very compelling story)
So YES, YOU CAN!!

People react to "fear" in different ways. I am always amazed. The character JM is far more dangerous not only by what he wants to do, but by what he doesn't do!

John McCain wanted to be President in the worst way.......and now he's trying to become President in the worst way. It's actually very, very sad to watch. I haven't often agreed with him, but (other than his Keating involvement) I've found him to be an honorable man. Unfortunately, with the campaign he's running (or allowing to be run for him) he has gone a long ways toward destroying that legacy. He'll be more remembered for the nasty, hate-filled campaign than for anything he worked for as a Senator. However, there's still time......not time for him to win the Presidency, but time for him to take control of his campaign, gag Sarah Palin (if not simply kick her off the ticket) and, at least, lose with a bit of dignity.

Agreed. Somehow, though, I think the absolutely insane fanaticism of the Palinites caught McCain by surprise. They are religious fanatics of the worst kind. With God on their side, they will shoot, bomb, abd beat up without remorse because their "God" authorized it. They are the ones our founding fathers warned us to watch out for, the factionalists.

Okay, this is what I think about these people who are suddenly showing up at the rallies; shouting out hatred, calling Obama an "Arab," man saying he's scared for his unborn child being born here if Obama is President - they are ALL PLANTED.

See, Sarah Palin all but called Obama a Terrorist in her stump speech - to lay the foundation.
Then, McCain jumped on the wagon.

They thought this would fly -- but it backfired. Even their own Republicans are getting scared of what can happen, and are speaking out.

So what do they do?

They PLANT THOSE STUPID, IGNORANT people to "ASK" the questions
Then, McCain will correct them, as he believes waht he is saying.

This way, he still gets his message out -- while looking as if he's trying to calm his RACIST MOBSTERS.

Fair enough--McCain scores no points with his angry, chanting crowds. But how is that an angry crowd of conservatives equals a "mob," and an angry crowd of chanting liberals equals "democracy in action"?

you don't see a bunch of angry faces at a democratic rally, you see a crowd of smiles. You don't hear democrats making bigoted slanderous remarks about their opponents, you hear them talk about policy, and current examples of non-leadership by their opponent at worst. There is just no comparison.

To Whom it May Concern: To most of you who replied to my much earlier post I want to thank you for thoughtful, insiteful, intelligent & articulate posts. In the time I have been on here, most replies I have received have been curt, hostile, & to be honest...just plain dumb. Unfortunately before I had the chance to respond, life happened. In any event, I would like to share this:

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/oct/10/mccain-booed-after-trying-to-calm-anti-obama-cr-1/

"The anger is getting raw at Republican rallies and John McCain is acting to tamp it down. McCain was booed by his own supporters Friday when, in an abrupt switch from raising questions about Barack Obama's character, he described the Democrat as a "decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States."

"If you want a fight, we will fight," McCain said. "But we will be respectful. I admire Sen. Obama and his accomplishments." When people booed, he cut them off. (I would like to add here that as you all know when either side mentions the opposition...the crowd boos)

~What so enraged me about this article is what David G said...in my opinion HE was inciting...warning...his comments were completely irresponsible and helped ignite the anger on this board right now~

Get real. People were already disgusted before Gergen added his opinion. Talk about dumb comments. The only reason McCain is now trying to reverse course, after days of inciting such hositility and rage, is because it has not benefitted him politically. It's yet another example of his erratic responses. Gergen is one of a long list of people who objected to the despicable smear campaign against Obama.

There IS reason to be worried! This must be taken seriously. Jane Wells wrote an excellent article drawing attention to a right-wing talk show host who called Obama a "maggot" -- dangerously similar to the radio-propogated language that stoked hatred against the Tutsis in Rwanda and created an environment where violence on an unthinkable scale occurred. Racial bigotry and violent hatred cannot be given a platform by the Republican nominee for president. Read this article and pass it on.... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jane-wells/from-maggots-to-cockroach_b_131748.html

I wonder how these republican supporters, the same ones who claim they are devout Christians and believe in strong family values, can be so hateful and even shout threats toward the other candidate. If McCain and Palin allow these people to take over their mic just to attack, then they also participants and advocates of hate. We don't need that in the White House.

Cindy McCain Kept Keating Partnership After Scandal ! Guilt by Association !
Sen. John McCain's wife and father-in-law continued a lucrative business partnership with disgraced financier Charles H. Keating Jr. for 11 years after the GOP presidential nominee said he ended his close friendship with Keating in March 1987.
Cindy McCain's business partnership with Keating in a real-estate development between 1986 and 1998 netted her a tidy profit, in addition to years of significant tax benefits. Her father, who died in 2000, earned similar returns.

Few of us liberals are the fun kind lately.

Just an aside about the guns:

My Dad has worked for the Department of Defense for decades and has been a member of the NRA for as far back as I can remember. Staunch Republican all of his life. For months now, we've been having all-out shouting matches over politics. (Once I stormed out of his house and - unfortunately - did not get the chance to eat a piece of my own birthday cake. :)

BUT - Enter Sarah Palin and following the last presidential debate, he called and said, "Okay, you win, I'm pulling that lever for Obama."

Unfortunately, we live in Massachusetts and I can't convince him to move to Ohio.

Hey, even Obama said he doesn't want to take guns away! Liberal, conservative is a political philosophy, not a lifestyle. I don't own a gun, but hell, given a certain situation, I would probably pick up one!
