Mob

John Weaver, John McCain's former top strategist, says the Republican candidate is making both a moral and a a tactical mistake by letting abusive hecklers have free rein at rallies:

"People need to understand, for moral reasons and the protection of our civil society, the differences with Senator Obama are ideological, based on clear differences on policy and a lack of experience compared to Senator McCain," Weaver said. "And from a purely practical political vantage point, please find me a swing voter, an undecided independent, or a torn female voter that finds an angry mob mentality attractive."

One of Washington's longest serving political hands expressed bewilderment and fright over the vitriol coming from McCain-Palin rallies, saying that the anger of the crowds could lead to violence.

"One of the most striking things we've seen in the last few day, we have seen it at the Palin rallies and we saw it at the McCain rally today," said David Gergen, appearing on Anderson Cooper 360 Thursday evening. "And we saw it to a considerable degree during the rescue package legislation. There is a free-floating sort of whipping-around anger that could really lead to some violence. And I think we're not far from that."

Gergen's remark came hours after John McCain and Sarah Palin held a rally in Wisconsin that saw attendees pleading with them to go on the attack against Barack Obama over his past associations and "socialistic" behavior. Earlier in the week crowd members at other McCain-Palin events have screamed out that Obama is a terrorist, has committed treason, and should be killed.

Watch:

Questioner: I'm mad. I'm really mad. And what's gonna surprise you, it's not the economy. It's the socialists taking over our country. [applause] Sit down, I'm not done! Thank you. Let me finish, please. [laughter]

McCain: Excuse me. [laughter]

Questioner: Thank you. I think its so important in today's country to see what we are missing and what's really going on. When you have an Obama, Pelosi, and the rest of the hooligans up there gonna run this country, we gotta have our head examined. It's time that you two are representing us, and we are mad! So go get em! [applause, chants of USA!]

McCain: Well, I think I got the message. [laughter] Could I just say, the gentleman is right.

"I really worry when we get people -- when you get the kind of rhetoric that you're getting at these rallies now," said Gergen. "I think it's really imperative the candidates try to calm people down."

Former McCain supporter Frank Schaeffer, writing Friday in the Baltimore Sun, concurred:

John McCain: In 2000, as a lifelong Republican, I worked to get you elected instead of George W. Bush. In return, you wrote an endorsement of one of my books about military service. You seemed to be a man who put principle ahead of mere political gain.

You have changed. You have a choice: Go down in history as a decent senator and an honorable military man with many successes, or go down in history as the latest abettor of right-wing extremist hate.

The Washington Post's Dan Balz warned that McCain is headed down the same dirty path George W. Bush took in the 2000 South Carolina primary.

"McCain's tactics are over the line, with no restraint in sight, and threaten to provoke reactions among partisans on both sides that will continue to escalate."

...

I was in contact over the last 24 hours with another veteran of recent Republican presidential campaigns and asked, on a not-for-attribution basis, whether he believed McCain's campaign is taking a big risk with its negative turn. "Yes," this strategist replied. "Big mistake. If this stuff mattered, then why didn't they raise it five months ago. Sad."

John Weaver, John McCain's former top strategist, says the Republican candidate is making both a moral and a a tactical mistake by letting abusive hecklers have free rein at rallies: "People need to...

We cannot afford to lose Obama for our better future. I really hope that angry mob doesn't have any chance to do anything bad to Obama. I am scared of it.

I really agree with you ! I don’t understand how the McCain Campaign can preach so much (HATE) at there rallies !
It was the BUSH/CHENEY/ROVE Administration that put us in this mess !
If the McCain/Palin/GOP/Republicans want to win. Do it with the issues about the economy !
Why is the McCain/Palin Campaign doing this and should stop it ?!! Do not scare us anymore ! Show us a plan for the Future??
As Americans we are scared of what is happening to US !

Im just curious...which bad policies are you talking about specifically? I know which ones I dont like from McCain. The nuclear power plants is one that is a little unsettling. Plus the repetitive "win the war" is getting old. There is no war going on to win; anyone can see that. We are jusy occupying the country and spending billions while Iraq has billions of surplus. We don't need to spend anymore money there, they have their own and probably won't pay anything back to us. I know firsthand that we are just throwing money away now because I'm a military spouse and my husband was there for a year. All he and his crew were doing is driving convoys around sending supplies...basically being target practice for Al Queda. We need to spend those billions on security and finding alternate fuel!!

What bad policies are you talking about? Do you honestly think that McCain has better ideas? At least, Obama is smart enough to consult the experts or subject matter experts when he's in doubt. McCain shoots from the hip without consulting anybody, then ends up backtracking when he finds that his first thought was wrong.

It is sad that McCain has stooped so low to try to win this election. I have never seen so much hate coming from the Republican Party or any party. This is the nasty of all nasty. How could any person vote for John McCain. John McCain is not fit to be a cizen of the USA much less the President because of the way he treated his wife. God help my Grandchildren

Let's be proactive people of America!

Today I sent emails to my state Senators and Congressman (search Google "emailing [insert your state] senators" and "emailing [insert your state] congressman" and you will go directly to websites for your Senators and Congressman). I pleaded and begged them to talk to McCain and Palin to stop the hateful madness before it causes the death of one American on American soil!

I also sent a personal email to John McCain at johnmccain.comn.com. I respectfully begged him to stop the hate campaign before it's too late. I forwarded my email to all my friends and asked them to send emails.

Please, my fellow Americans, do all the good acts that you can to stop this madness!

Isn't it illegal to "incite to violence?" Isn't that what Palin and McCain and their strategists been doing all week? Were those questions planted?

It is just past noon on 20 January 2009, and the Chief Justice says: Senator Obama, are you ready to take the oath....and he does and he becomes the 44th President of the United States and the whole world is deleriously happy.

The mccain/palin team is blaming the global economic failure on minorities defaulting on loans. Reminds me of the na-zis in 1930s Germany. And will the moderator stop deleting this valid comment or at least give me a legitimate reason why this comparison can't be made.

I'd like to ask that man, does he know that his party has been in power for 8 years and they are the ones responsible for creating this situation that;s made it necessary for us become a "socialist society" ?????

I feel like I've lived in this nightmare for 8 years and now that I see hope, I have to listen that ahold spout off like it's the Democrats who've been in power!

The Democrats have controlled Congress since 2001? Or are you saying that we were doing just fine until after 6 years of Bush, and a Republican controlled Congress, the Dems took control; less than 2 years ago? lol

I am a white woman and am embarrassed to be so while I'm watching a McCain or Palin clip from their rallies. What is this? Mississippi in the 40's?? I feel like at any moment I am going to see someone in a white hood. McCain and Palin should be ashamed of the hatred they are spreading. GO OBAMA!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:33 PM on 10/10/2008

I am a white woman also from West Virginia and I too am appalled at the blatant racism and the fact that this horrific conduct is being encourage by mccain/palin. I know that racism exists but I didn't think it was at these levels. You couldn't pay me to vote for them. I have supported Obama from day one, he will be the first black president of the USA and thank GOd! He is the one to lead us into the light!

Black guy that attended that undercover Klan Rally should be proof to all that our famous uncle is alive and well just like his MA STER

I know it's cringe inducing. Haven't we learned anything? And frightening, too. I hope Obama's Secret Service detail is looking out for him VERY carefully. And Michelle's also.

The only silver lining is that McCain is hemorhaging support from former independants. I used to respect him as the "Loyal Opposition." Someone I could respect as a decent man whether or not I agreed with him politically. But if what we're seeing now is the REAL John McCain, thank goodness we found out BEFORE the election that in truth, he's a bigot.

sharonrj50 - have you been listening to rush limbaugh??

Barack Obama has been vetted for several years now, has written two best-sellers - went to Columbia and Harvard -has been - elected to the State Senate and US Senate - from Chicago, Illinois.

He is also a truly inspiring personality - a leader that bring out the best in people surrounding him.

Why don't you start listing all of Palin and McCain's associations - are they clean as driven snow??

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:26 PM on 10/10/2008

Have you listened to his best sellers? Very eye opening on how he realizes the poor blacks and the games they have to play to be accepted and to fool the white elitists! Give me a break. He actually has an audio tape in his own words. All you Obama followers, be careful what you ask for. Change is coming but I don't think it is what you really want. Not in the form of socialism. You think our privacies have been invaded with the Bush, wait until our freedoms are gone because of the socialistic views of Barry and Michelle. Can't you see this is all a fake to get voted into office. Neither one of them can do anything by themselves, but Barry had the backing of some very evil men. Think! We provided our terrorists of 9/11 not only the training on American soil but the tools (the planes) to do almost destroy our country. Ok let us just do it again. Oh yeah the best people, Rev. Wright, Louis Ferracon, Acorn, Ayres, etc.

Its these lessons that must be learned, or we will be doomed to repeat them.

I have Republicans as family, friends and co-workers and it is astounding that when Bush has been in charge 8 years and he and Paulson suggest this Corporate Welfare bailout that they don't hear the words "we need this bailout" coming out of Bush and McCain's mouths . It's like that should be playing over, and over, and over again until where the Corporate Welfare came from gets through their heads.

(And they'd want to kill Pelosi and Obama if they refused to go ahead with it.) We need to set up a different country and let the angry Republicans take their own people down the road to perdition.
