Mob

John Weaver, John McCain's former top strategist, says the Republican candidate is making both a moral and a a tactical mistake by letting abusive hecklers have free rein at rallies:

"People need to understand, for moral reasons and the protection of our civil society, the differences with Senator Obama are ideological, based on clear differences on policy and a lack of experience compared to Senator McCain," Weaver said. "And from a purely practical political vantage point, please find me a swing voter, an undecided independent, or a torn female voter that finds an angry mob mentality attractive."

One of Washington's longest serving political hands expressed bewilderment and fright over the vitriol coming from McCain-Palin rallies, saying that the anger of the crowds could lead to violence.

"One of the most striking things we've seen in the last few day, we have seen it at the Palin rallies and we saw it at the McCain rally today," said David Gergen, appearing on Anderson Cooper 360 Thursday evening. "And we saw it to a considerable degree during the rescue package legislation. There is a free-floating sort of whipping-around anger that could really lead to some violence. And I think we're not far from that."

Gergen's remark came hours after John McCain and Sarah Palin held a rally in Wisconsin that saw attendees pleading with them to go on the attack against Barack Obama over his past associations and "socialistic" behavior. Earlier in the week crowd members at other McCain-Palin events have screamed out that Obama is a terrorist, has committed treason, and should be killed.

Watch:

Questioner: I'm mad. I'm really mad. And what's gonna surprise you, it's not the economy. It's the socialists taking over our country. [applause] Sit down, I'm not done! Thank you. Let me finish, please. [laughter]

McCain: Excuse me. [laughter]

Questioner: Thank you. I think its so important in today's country to see what we are missing and what's really going on. When you have an Obama, Pelosi, and the rest of the hooligans up there gonna run this country, we gotta have our head examined. It's time that you two are representing us, and we are mad! So go get em! [applause, chants of USA!]

McCain: Well, I think I got the message. [laughter] Could I just say, the gentleman is right.

"I really worry when we get people -- when you get the kind of rhetoric that you're getting at these rallies now," said Gergen. "I think it's really imperative the candidates try to calm people down."

Former McCain supporter Frank Schaeffer, writing Friday in the Baltimore Sun, concurred:

John McCain: In 2000, as a lifelong Republican, I worked to get you elected instead of George W. Bush. In return, you wrote an endorsement of one of my books about military service. You seemed to be a man who put principle ahead of mere political gain.

You have changed. You have a choice: Go down in history as a decent senator and an honorable military man with many successes, or go down in history as the latest abettor of right-wing extremist hate.

The Washington Post's Dan Balz warned that McCain is headed down the same dirty path George W. Bush took in the 2000 South Carolina primary.

"McCain's tactics are over the line, with no restraint in sight, and threaten to provoke reactions among partisans on both sides that will continue to escalate."

...

I was in contact over the last 24 hours with another veteran of recent Republican presidential campaigns and asked, on a not-for-attribution basis, whether he believed McCain's campaign is taking a big risk with its negative turn. "Yes," this strategist replied. "Big mistake. If this stuff mattered, then why didn't they raise it five months ago. Sad."

John Weaver, John McCain's former top strategist, says the Republican candidate is making both a moral and a a tactical mistake by letting abusive hecklers have free rein at rallies: "People need to...

It felt like I was watching an audience from a David Duke rally of a couple of decades ago. On second thought, I don't think they sounded this angry.

This sort of tactic the Mc Cain Palin are employing is hideous and destrutive.

There is a big danger in what Mc Cain Palin are doing and the extreme right wing that they are attracting are being baited by them.

Mc Cain is a coward there is no doubt in my mind that he is not a true American.

I know many many Republicans that would never go this far and find it dangerous as i do.

Mc Cain is showing he is not stable and Palin is showing everyone that she is a FOOL and very imature also unAmerican as anyone i can remember.

There is a real danger here with the people that are attracted to Palin please write your senator , congressman and tell them to investagate Palin and Mc Cain and to write them a warning letters that this begavior and baiting will not be accepted . Yes we are a free country but when you are stirring up the pot and hoping that something happens to your opposition there are laws that will deal with it. Germany knows those laws and so do other countries.

I guess the Secret Service is to busy scaring High School Students for protesting Bush's Invasion/ Occupation, to deal with McCain/ Palin trying to Rally more potentially violent "adult" (?) people....

Seems McCain has adopted the Palin strategy of destroy the competition and those you don't like... Reagan had Voodo Economics that McCain agrees with and now it's Palin Witch Doctor purging...

I guess that's an indication of what's trickling down all over us...

Republican crowds really do look like angry mobs. Is it the inherent racism buried under the entire Republican ideology (white guys first)?? Or is that Repubs so like winning they don't care what they unleash in their psychological manipulation of the public. It's soo Rovian.

McCain and Palin are stoking this rage for political advantage. The cynicism is nauseating. The very real possibility of very real tragic consequences should be apparent to every decent responsible citizen in this country. By adding Palin to the ticket McCain hit bottom. They are terrifying. That there is even the remotest chance of these two people running the United States should spring all reasonable persons into action to do what they can to make sure IT DOES NOT HAPPEN.

McCain's best quality was his "honor." That is now gone with his lies, his anger, his contempt and the angry mob mentality he is promoting. His father must be rolling over in his grave, as is Ronald Reagan.

With our economy and our foreign policy (e.g., Afghanistan) spiraling downward and with most people thinking that the country is headed in the wrong direction, the die hard republicans should not be surprised that Obama is leading in the polls.

Naomi Wolf: We would be naive given the historical patterns to have hope that there's going to be a transparent, accountable election in 2008. There are various ways the blueprint indicates how events are much more likely to play out. Historically, the months leading up to the national election are likely to be unstable.

What classically happens is either there will be a period of provocation, and we have a history of this in the United States -- agitators who are dressed as or act like activist voter registration workers, anti-war marchers ... but who engage in actual violence, torch property, assault police officers. And that scares people. People are much less likely to vote for change when they're scared, and it gives them the excuse to crack down.

In addition, I'm concerned about the 2007 Defense Authorization Act, which makes it much easier for the president to declare martial law.

I'm 85% sure this is going to happen. I've been watching them set it up for over 2 years now. And it's not like their prep work isn't making it to mainstream news.

I'm hoping they just give it up when they see Obama positioned for a landslide. That being said, they could arrest him or worse, which is what Naomi has been warning. It's really very VERY frightening.

I remain convinced that, having built up this fascist state, Cheney and Bush are not going to just relinquish it.

I have voted nothing but Republicans since I have been old enough to cast a ballot. Reagan twice, 3 Bush's and a Dole. I am appalled by what I see now at these rallies. It breaks my heart to know these individuals claim the legacy of a truely great American, Ronald Reagan, to justify their words. Barak Obama professess hope to America and the world. I will for the first time vote Democrat, something I never felt possilbe. The Republican party has become an embarrassment to our nation.

You should check out the Newsbusters site. They are claiming that there is no such thing as a 'lifelong Republican' who is voting for Sen. Obama, and if they see such claims in the press, they know it is a lie. I think the rightwingers have truly rounded the bend; if they don't like what they see or hear, they just insist it doesn't exist. They're even claiming that the people yelling 'kill him' at their rallies are planted by the Democrats. Even if that were true, would it explain why their candidates don't ask those people to stop it and engage in civil discourse? I am praying for Sen. Obama and his electoral victory. Praying.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:16 PM on 10/10/2008

How about instead of praying, you do some volunteering? Unlike prayer, it has statistically verifiable effects. Praying isn't really doing anything - this election isn't a case of "it's the thought that counts".

I'm with you there. I also was a Republican, born and raised; my father and I sent jelly beans to Ronald Reagan at the White House.
These folks are not Ron Reagan. They are power-hungry, blinded by ignorance, big spenders, and full of entitlement.

Heard about this on Thom Hartman this morning:

http://www.7-election.com/

In 2000 Bush outsold Gore by only 1%

The 2004 coffee poll tracked exactly with the official results -Bush 51%, Kerry 49%

Today Obama is ahead by59.32% to 40.68%

McCain is only ahead in New Hampshire and West Virginia.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:02 PM on 10/10/2008

If I'm not mistaken, Gore won the popular vote in 2000. I also doubt Obama is ahead by nearly 19 points. You must be referring to a particular state and not the nation.

As somebody who grew up in Germany where people have a certain heightened awareness, I am shocked at these reports: These are the first signs of true fascism. It isn't far from proclaiming a desire for political violence and from actual acts of violence. There's no two ways about it: political violence is fascism and calling for political violence is condoning and fostering fascism.

I think the latest McCain-Palin attacks ARE stirring up an ugliness that could easily get out of control. People are scared to death and angry about the economy. But instead of telling people how they will get them out of this mess, they are creating a bogeyman to point them toward. I used to respect McCain, but to me, he stopped putting "country first" with his pick of Palin. But this new "tactic" (so as not to confuse "tactics" and "strategy") is a dangerous Rove-like low.

John McCain and Sarah Palin's demogogic appeals to the people who suffer most under the policies he has supported throughout his career, is really the full measure of the man. His lust for power is such that he is willing to undermine America.

One way or another, on November 5 he will have to look himself in the mirror.
