Mob

John Weaver, John McCain's former top strategist, says the Republican candidate is making both a moral and a a tactical mistake by letting abusive hecklers have free rein at rallies:

"People need to understand, for moral reasons and the protection of our civil society, the differences with Senator Obama are ideological, based on clear differences on policy and a lack of experience compared to Senator McCain," Weaver said. "And from a purely practical political vantage point, please find me a swing voter, an undecided independent, or a torn female voter that finds an angry mob mentality attractive."

One of Washington's longest serving political hands expressed bewilderment and fright over the vitriol coming from McCain-Palin rallies, saying that the anger of the crowds could lead to violence.

"One of the most striking things we've seen in the last few day, we have seen it at the Palin rallies and we saw it at the McCain rally today," said David Gergen, appearing on Anderson Cooper 360 Thursday evening. "And we saw it to a considerable degree during the rescue package legislation. There is a free-floating sort of whipping-around anger that could really lead to some violence. And I think we're not far from that."

Gergen's remark came hours after John McCain and Sarah Palin held a rally in Wisconsin that saw attendees pleading with them to go on the attack against Barack Obama over his past associations and "socialistic" behavior. Earlier in the week crowd members at other McCain-Palin events have screamed out that Obama is a terrorist, has committed treason, and should be killed.

Watch:

Questioner: I'm mad. I'm really mad. And what's gonna surprise you, it's not the economy. It's the socialists taking over our country. [applause] Sit down, I'm not done! Thank you. Let me finish, please. [laughter]

McCain: Excuse me. [laughter]

Questioner: Thank you. I think its so important in today's country to see what we are missing and what's really going on. When you have an Obama, Pelosi, and the rest of the hooligans up there gonna run this country, we gotta have our head examined. It's time that you two are representing us, and we are mad! So go get em! [applause, chants of USA!]

McCain: Well, I think I got the message. [laughter] Could I just say, the gentleman is right.

"I really worry when we get people -- when you get the kind of rhetoric that you're getting at these rallies now," said Gergen. "I think it's really imperative the candidates try to calm people down."

Former McCain supporter Frank Schaeffer, writing Friday in the Baltimore Sun, concurred:

John McCain: In 2000, as a lifelong Republican, I worked to get you elected instead of George W. Bush. In return, you wrote an endorsement of one of my books about military service. You seemed to be a man who put principle ahead of mere political gain.

You have changed. You have a choice: Go down in history as a decent senator and an honorable military man with many successes, or go down in history as the latest abettor of right-wing extremist hate.

The Washington Post's Dan Balz warned that McCain is headed down the same dirty path George W. Bush took in the 2000 South Carolina primary.

"McCain's tactics are over the line, with no restraint in sight, and threaten to provoke reactions among partisans on both sides that will continue to escalate."

...

I was in contact over the last 24 hours with another veteran of recent Republican presidential campaigns and asked, on a not-for-attribution basis, whether he believed McCain's campaign is taking a big risk with its negative turn. "Yes," this strategist replied. "Big mistake. If this stuff mattered, then why didn't they raise it five months ago. Sad."

It's no wonder this is going on what with nutters like Rush stoking hatred in the red staters. I listened to his show today and he is coming off the rails, did everything but call Obama the n- word. Went on a rant about blacks rioting if Obama loses. I'll tell you who will riot, it won't be African Americans. It'll be white right wingers if McCain loses due to the hate mongers like Druggie Rush, Sean Klannity, Savage and that ilk. I live in a red state, and let me tell you, these folks are scary. I have an Obama sticker on my car and have had it vandalized. The hate and racism are palpable, I can easily see it, (I am white by the way).

It's time folks realized this is a democracy, and that the demographics are changing. This will not be a majority white nation in 30 years. We better dismiss the racism and learn to live together. Obama is the future, McCain is a reflection of the past.

Pity poor old me, I live in WEst Virginia but to tell you the truth I have been so pleasantly surprised by the support here for Obama not that the unenlightened, cave man mentality still doesn't exist, it does, but more and more people are becoming enlightened here. And if it is happening here it can happen anywhere. This country is going through a cleansing period.

As a black woman from the deep south I wept at those 440 miners who staged a one day strike on behalf as a show of force to their company for trying to undermine Senator Obama. UNIONS unite and those coal miners showed what solidarity means. I shall never forget that. West Virginia miners are strong and have integrity.

Union member here.

The problem is that the more gullible among us were fooled to begin with McCain's "integrity" act.
1 He was never a maverick...
2 He was never a unifier...
3 He's NOT gonna be president...

If anything happens to Obama I want McCain held accountable. He is off his nut. I can't believe that this man that I once believed to be the most upstanding Repub. could fall so low. To incite hate is something that proves he doesn't care about this country, it's win at all cost, and is a high cost that he is stirring up!!!!

I use to think John McCain was an okay fellow. Not anymore. He is spewing hate. He needs to stop this right now. In 2000 the GOP did this same nasty stuff to him. How can he do this? I felt bad for him then, but now I can't stand the sight of him. How low can he go? I probably shoudn't ask that.

It has become apparent that McCain has left all reason, rationale and morality behind in his quest for the prize. He has sold his soul and what is left of his pride. He has squandered his once 'heroic' reputation and it will be interesting to see how history judges his pathetic, low life, insidious tactics. Personally, I think he will be remembered as a man who would sacrifice his family, his reputation and the future of the U.S., to try and attain the office to which he is no longer fit to visit, let alone reside in.

Did this former top strategist get fired or what....

Sounds like a very bitter man....kind of like McClellan who went on to write a tell all book.

Seems like a lot of people are getting their 15 minutes of fame...(or is that blame)

A danger in rousing the rabble is that they can only be aimed for a short period of time. Eventually they will strike out in all directions, unless you keep a target dangling in their view (as a war would do).

As a black Obama supporter I see this incitement to riot as purely racist in it's intent. These whites are really angry about what is happeneing to them as far as the economy is concerned but don't have the smarts to blame who is really the cause of their pain. The Republicans! One stupid white man, said he wasn't mad about the economy but how Obama who is associating with terrorists was running for president. As a black person in this country I'm sick too death of these racists. It will serve them right if they lose their homes, stock value, 401ks, jobs etc due to thier racism. It will be poetic justice. They would rather talk about BS than elect a competent, smart man who happens to be black. This terrorist crap is just an excuse to vote white again, no matter who the white persons are. How pathetic this country is.

I think racism is a "fear". It can be overcome once they know there is nothing to "fear but fear itself"...who said that?? Yes, I am W/F and voting for Obama and I have been very disturbed by the past 8 years and what the neocons have done to this country, but it will get better by electing Obama!

The African American gentleman who "Begged" McCain to "Hit Obama hard", citing the "Good Reverend Wright" at a rally in Wisconsin today was a paid motivational speaker.

Slate has already identified him James T Harris, Milwaulkee talk radio host. What they failed to mention is that Mr. Harris's services are for hire through his main business, IllumiNation.

http://jamestharris.com/

From his website:
"The outcomes you want your audience to experience should, whenever possible, determine the length of time to allocate to a subject expert. With IllumiNation, our subject experts will deliver outcomes. Only the constraints of time will determine how far we can or cannot “drill down” into the depth of the topic at your event. Therefore, your assessment of your audience’s needs should occur before final decision is made by the event planners about the available time slot."

Another dirty trick by the McCain campaign. Please don't let them cover up their race-baiting like this.

People this is really a cleansing period for America if seen in a larger context. There are still alot of negative, ignorant, racist people out there and America needs a cleansing of that to move forward and be the great nation she is capable of being. Barack is definitely a rare, one of a kind candidate and we should feel honored he was sent to us at this time.

Yes, racism foundation is based on fear and there isn't anything to be afraid of. We have more to be afraid of bush & company and what they have done the last 8 years and the negative impact they have/had on this country.

This is very dangerous. For people to feel this much hate, and get to share it with so many people, will be the one justification someone will need to do something crazy. I am really afraid. I have never seen so much hate for another candidate. I actually don’t understand where it is coming from. McCain and Palin are starting to look more evil to me that Bush and Cheney. Palin of all people has no right to question Obama's character. She sits and hides from the media and her own state like a coward she is. I can’t wait until they lose. That alone would make the world a better place over night.

The hateful country bumkins from the red states, are going to go on a rampage if Obama wins.

They are too intellectually frail and deficient of character, to control their anger and hostility, even if they are over-ruled by the majority of American voters.
