Snl Thursday

Last night SNL debuted the first of its election-season prime-time programs, "Saturday Night Live Thursday Weekend Update," featuring an opening sketch and an expanded "Weekend Update." The opening sketch spoofed Tuesday night's presidential debate, featuring former cast-member Chris Parnell returning as a stopwatch-happy Tom Brokaw, Darrell Hammond as a wandering, semi-senile John McCain and Fred Armisen as Barack Obama (including a cheap shot about Bill Ayers that rang a weird note, but more on that below). Special guest star Bill Murray — introduced and chyroned as "William Murray" as a questioner from the audience — got a special round of applause (Murray, as most are aware, is a former SNL cast member).

The "Weekend Update" section featured Amy Poehler and Seth Myers in their traditional anchor roles, along with a financial expert played by Kenan Thompson and, in a wackier turn, lovably loopy castmember Will Forte and Armisen again as 80s super-duo Hall & Oates. Videos below; some light commentary/analysis below that.

(1) Presidential Debate, featuring Bill Murray and Chris Parnell:

(2) Update Thursday: "Really?! with Seth and Amy" and "Fix It!!"

(3) Update Thursday: Hall and Oates, "You Make Me Feel Brand New"

*************

Here's my takeaway: Overall the show was solid, but not special — that is to say, it was just a cut from the SNL formula plopped into prime time. Which worked, but didn't kill as it could have if it had felt more like a show planned specifically for the half-hour format. Also, you can afford a weaker bit like "Fix It!" (based on a one-note joke) within a longer show, but it sticks out much more within a spare half-hour. This is something that the Daily Show and Colbert Report have perfected, the joke-per-increment-of-airtime ratio (and, in a different way, actual half-hour news programs, which cram ridiculous amounts of information into the broadcast). I think the half-hour format for SNL could be a killer show, and perhaps when they're not reeling from four live shows in a row with news breaking right up until airtime, they'll have time to fine-tune the formula.

On the substance: I gasped in the opening sketch when Bill Ayers came up. Here's how Armisen-as-Obama referred to Ayers:

"My best friend and my mentor, former Weather Underground leader and unrepentant terrorist William Ayers."

It couldn't have been written better by Michelle Malkin. Or Sarah Palin. Look, I recognize that mocking McCain means needing a counterpart for Obama. The problem is, the McCain jokes worked because they rang true. McCain referred to Obama as "that one" during the debate, so they riffed on that. McCain just referred oddly to a crowd as "my fellow prisoners," so they riffed lightly on the old-man-senility thing by having him address people with blatantly different names. McCain wandered all over the townhall, so they spoofed that (that was also spoofed by Conan O'Brien, Jay Leno, and Jon Stewart). So all of these are things that rang true.

But the Ayers thing did not — mostly because it's not. If it had been phrased as a question by someone in the audience, or stated by McCain or Brokaw, and Obama's denials had been comically overstepped (like, say, if he denied a relationship with Ayers and the chyron read "Obama: Ayers is my best friend"), then that would have rang true. But in this case, the impulse to 'fairness' in the form of balance led to a joke that was not only unfair in its untruth, but unfunny for the same reason. As Andy Borowitz said at last weekend's New Yorker panel, "the idea of balance in satire is the opposite of satire."

Otherwise, it was a fun and brisk show. Here are a few notes:

  • I liked the simultaneous question ask-and-answer bit in the debate sketch (especially how all you could really hear between Obama and McCain were the words "change" and "maverick")

  • I wasn't sure what they'd do with the opening "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!" but I thought they'd tweak it somehow. They didn't, and I wish they had — it was just one of the things that made the special un-special.

  • Some great lines from "Weekend Update": Seth: "As stocks dropped sharply on Monday, President Bush urged patience with the government's new $700 billion plan, saying 'It's going to take a while.' Of course, the good news is, he's never been right."

  • "6 in 10 Americans think a new Great Depression is likely — but half of those people say they look forward to homeless people wearing fedoras again."

  • Amy: "The second presidential debate was held Tuesday night, and the town hall format featured an audience comprised of a diverse cross-section of eighty undecided bald dudes."

  • "At a rally on Saturday, Sarah Palin attempted to recite a quote from Madeline Albright that she read off a Starbucks cup. She then summed up her views on energy by claiming, "America runs on Dunkin." AWESOME.

  • Seth: "A friend of OJ Simpson's said that before the start of his trial he broke up with his girlfriend Christine Prody, his girlfriend of ten years. Well, he didn't OJ break up with her, he just regular broke up with her." OUCH.

  • Re: Kenan Thompson's financial expert joke — "they need to FIX it!" — not sure if this is a take on McCain's "I can fix it" or just expressing the fact that no one actually understands how to stop the financial crisis, but the audience was laughing.

  • LOVE "Really! With Seth & Amy." Best lines: "Even the MAFIA knows not to spend money that quick after a heist" and "You had to go there for team building? Here's a cheaper way to do team building: You know all those empty sacks that used to be filled with money? Get in those and race."

  • Also ratcheting it up to "OH MY GOD, ARE YOU SERIOUS?" was great.

  • Highlight, as anyone who knows me will know: HALL & OATES. What underrated artists. Loved Forte's hair, Armisen's mustache. "What I want you've got, a choice in this election, Gotta make the right selection, Obama or McCain..." I think I actually liked Armisen's two-word "Ooh-ooh" contributions best. Though "Well I heard McCain once built his own sex dungeon" was pretty good.

  • Goodbyes music: I recognize it's an aural cue, and a branding thing, but it doesn't fit at the end of a quickie half-hour show — it's meant as a release after an adrenaline-fueled 90-minute odyssey. Or at least bring Bill Murray back up.

    Hello to all commentators,

All the commercials, pundits, gaffes, personal attacks, and the MSM will not dictate the outcome of this election. THE GROUND GAME IS WHERE ELECTIONS ARE WON, AND LOST!

Before you go to the next left leaning article to comment on, or right leaning article to start an argument with a repug (which will no doubt end with them calling you an unpatriotic socialist wimp) I suggest that you get in the game.

Omygod, I laughed out loud through that whole debate.
They are totally spot on with those impersonations.
Right down to that "an*al" Brokaw who tried to put a stop anything "interesting".
Okay, now I will look forward to Thursdays for sure.

you guys need to lighten up about Will Ayers. Even "working class" whites arent buying this crap. Why flipout at SNL?

It sounded to me they were just saying nobody cares about it.

There's an actor that used to be on the Jamie Foxx show named Christopher B. Duncan that does a spot on Obama impression.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8N_VAdYOgU

^^ video of him answering questions.

Either he didnt try out or they didnt want him. But the guy playing Obama now SUCKSSSS and him being white/hispanic is very noticable. Obma isnt so mixed that you cant tell he's black.

Added on to the fact that this guy's impression sucks just makes it worse.

    Thanks so much.
That was hilarious; the Donald Duck making love part is just awesome.
SNL should contact Christopher B. Duncan.

See, I took the William Ayers thing to be mocking of the stupid claims from the right. But that's just me.

I am tired of SNL being in the tank for McCain and Hillary. How can these actors perform some sketches that are outright lies about Obama. I hate that Bill Ayers comment.

Darrell Hammond's McCain impression sounded more like his old Bill Clinton impression, but the way he held the mic and the wandering all over the stage were spot on.

Fred Armisen needs to work on his Obama. And the Ayers line wasn't funny.

Chris Parnell as Tom Brokaw was hilarious.

    Loved the simultaneous q&a.

Loved, loved, loved "Really!?! With Seth & Amy" and "Oh my god, are you serious !?!"

I think that Armisen sucks, he doesn't sound like obama at all. And why is SNL always making Obama scenes worse than mcCain's. I did hear that Lorne Michaels is GOP. Then Lorne should not be in NY, go to alabama or some ultraconservtive place like that.

They need Tina Fey as writer as well as Palin channeler: you can tell she's writing her own stuff, because it's pointed, finding its humor in the actual illogical structure of her "verbage". The rest of the show declines rapidly, which is a shame considering the strength of performers like Amy Poehler.

The Debate writers let themselves off easy with their one-note joke about timing: instead of lampooning actual content, they were able to dodge it by cutting off the candidates' answers. That's not the kind of satire we need! Unfortunately for Lorne Michaels, the Daily Show and Colbert demonstrate what's possible and make SNL seem even more lame.

The sight gags were written by Wandering John McCain himself at the debate. Easy pickings. The Ayres joke was out-of-sync, the way the New Yorker cover had been: not well-observed, not insightful, just a straightforward depiction of known prejudices that could easily enhance them.

They had a guy doing a better Obama sunday during football. The guy they had opposite Frank Caliendo was on point. The guy SNL has blows.

    A letter to John McCain,

Mr. McCain, you have been weighed in the balances and your time is up. The decisions you have made regarding your campaign have been without regard to the American people. You have put yourself first and country last. Your once respected campaign rallies have now become hate rallies. You have allowed Sarah Palin to hi-jack your campaign rallies and turn them into forums for hate. This has opened the old wounds of racism and fear that continues to plaque the south. The south is one part of the country where you are above 50% in the polls. You nor your running mate are talking about real issues for the American people. The more you push division and hate you will be pushed down in the polls. The hands of God will not let you pass. The American people in this time of our history are not looking for messages filled with hate. Since you are not willing to take back the control you have given to Sarah Palin, you are heading for a political disaster that will be in the history books. Your time is up.

The only good thing about the debate skit was the T0m Br0kaw character, he was money. Other than that, the Hall & Oates thing was chuckle worthy and Amy is hilarious. So ok...
