John Lewis

Georgia congressman and Civil Rights leader John Lewis, reacting to the increasingly incendiary atmosphere at McCain-Palin campaign rallies, condemned the GOP for using tactics that are creating a mood not unlike the one created by George Wallace, the former segregationist governor and presidential candidate. Lewis accused the Republicans of "sowing the seeds of hatred and division," and warned the McCain campaign that they are "playing with fire:"

"As one who was a victim of violence and hate during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, I am deeply disturbed by the negative tone of the McCain-Palin campaign," Lewis said in a statement. "Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse."

The veteran Democrat even invoked one of the most divisive figures in recent U.S. history. "During another period, in the not too distant past, there was a governor of the state of Alabama named George Wallace who also became a presidential candidate. George Wallace never threw a bomb. He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who were simply trying to exercise their constitutional rights. Because of this atmosphere of hate, four little girls were killed on Sunday morning when a church was bombed in Birmingham, Alabama," said Lewis.

He warned, "As public figures with the power to influence and persuade, Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are playing with fire, and if they are not careful, that fire will consume us all. They are playing a very dangerous game that disregards the value of the political process and cheapens our entire democracy. We can do better. The American people deserve better."

The McCain campaign reacted quickly to push back against Lewis' statement:

Congressman John Lewis' comments represent a character attack against Governor Sarah Palin and me that is shocking and beyond the pale. The notion that legitimate criticism of Senator Obama's record and positions could be compared to Governor George Wallace, his segregationist policies and the violence he provoked is unacceptable and has no place in this campaign. I am saddened that John Lewis, a man I've always admired, would make such a brazen and baseless attack on my character and the character of the thousands of hardworking Americans who come to our events to cheer for the kind of reform that will put America on the right track.

I call on Senator Obama to immediately and personally repudiate these outrageous and divisive comments that are so clearly designed to shut down debate 24 days before the election. Our country must return to the important debate about the path forward for America.

The Obama campaign declined to compare McCain's campaign with that of Wallace's, but backed Lewis' warning against the "hateful rhetoric" being used at some McCain-Palin campaign rallies:

Senator Obama does not believe that John McCain or his policy criticism is in any way comparable to George Wallace or his segregationist policies. But John Lewis was right to condemn some of the hateful rhetoric that John McCain himself personally rebuked just last night, as well as the baseless and profoundly irresponsible charges from his own running mate that the Democratic nominee for President of the United States 'pals around with terrorists.' As Barack Obama has said himself, the last thing we need from either party is the kind of angry, divisive rhetoric that tears us apart at a time of crisis when we desperately need to come together. That is the kind of campaign Senator Obama will continue to run in the weeks ahead.

The criticism from Lewis is especially sharp considering McCain has called him one of the "wisest" men he knows, one whose advice he would seek should he win the presidency.

The ball is now in McCain's court. Recent events seem to indicate that even he has come to realize how reprehensible some of the emotions and words of some of his followers are and he has tried to tamp them down. His actions contradict his message. I'm beginning to think that even he is unsure what he believes. Hopefully, he still believes in America and will end this folly.

McCain is shocked and hurt by Lewis' comments while McCain continues to run adds connecting Obama to a former domestic terrorist. Too much.

I agree John McCain/ Sarah Palin are instigating HATE in white America. This is the psychological warfare that HATE GROUPS need tin order demolish the minorities. McCain is George Wallace and Sarah Palin is The female version Of David Duke. I bet if you ask Palin who is George Wallace, she will say I don't know or she might even call him a great American.

McCain Stop It Now, Palin Just Doesn't Know any Better

Even the most prejudiced people in America know that the "N" word is out-of-bounds, so they have to have a new code word...terrorist! This has got to be one of the most overused, banal terms of the last 8 years. But like "commie" as used in the 50's and 60's to successfully repress free speech in our country (until the civil rights movement won through), "terrorist" is the mating call of the bigot. Racism caused the South to turn Republican, and it is still as strong today as it was then.

I find it really strange that john mccain feels his character had been attack. Thats just what they have been doing to obama. With this " pals around with terrorist " . ITS LIKE HAVING A BULLY PUNCH YOU, AND WHEN YOU PUNCH BACK. EVERYONE ASK YOU, WHY DID YOU HIT THE BULLY BACK. Barack is about bringing America together. Lewis is right when he says, mccain/palin are spreading HATE AND FEAR.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:19 AM on 10/12/2008

I actually think it is more like a bully beating the tar out of you day after day, several times a day. Then when you finally punch back they declare "both of them are attacking each other." This happened over and over in the primaries and it's happening now with the MSM.

BGDiNLV posted this video link earlier.

When did it become wrong to feel good about the candidate you're voting for? Why is it bad to be inspired to do more for your country because the President says, "Yes we can."?

This is what the GOP wants. "He may be inspirational, but we don't know anything about him."

Ask yourself(ves), when's the last time my vote felt this important?

Finally, I won't be voting for "the lesser of two evils." The guy we chose IS the right guy. Change IS the right message.

"We are the change We have been waiting for."

WOW.

Lewis, keep your mouth quiet! You are not helping Obama who we want to win. He has enough to contend with. The people who want to hear the ravages and idiocy of the right wingers will not hear you. You may persuade those who are teetering to go to McCain. Obama doesn't need anymore black pastors and politicians to complain about anything. Please for the sake of this country keep quiet. You have nothing to say that hasn't been said.

I think Fremon has a point. McCain would love to start a fight about this. It changes the subject regarding the economy and has the "bonus" of making some folks circle their racial wagons. It's exactly why Obama is being so "cool" and not taking the bait. They are destroying themselves. Why stop them? Every time they have another rally that is becoming more and more like a klan rally it is turning people off.

I disagree with you. He has the right to say this and I think those 'on the fence', the independents will cross over- you see he is flaming the seeds of hate since McCain does not have a 'pot to piss in'-excuse the analogy. With the economy, in 'the same pot', maybe those who would never vote for a black man, especially in Georgia, would. I am from Georgia and my sister says it is VERY close there-don't listen to the polls

I agree John Lewis has more than earned the right to call it like it is! He lived through that period of history first hand, he knows "hate talk" when he hears it.

My second point, for those that can't see yourself voting for the black half of Obama, just remember he is half white. You can just tell yourself and friends you voted for the white half if it makes you feel better.

Wow! Finally somebody gets up to tell the truth and you get upset?
The fact that McCain has reacted so strongly proves he was hit by the comment. And as he has no more connection to his own conscience -it seems. - he needs someone from outside.
And I did not even register it was a black man who was talking - truth is truth, so what if yellow pink or green skin? -. However, from many reactions here which I consider to be racist I want to tell you, Sir John Lewis, that I am even more greatful to you and I have even more respect for you and your courage! You are a great, honorable man. Thank you!

Fremon, you are showing your fear and uncertainty and as a woman of color who may move to Canada if Barack is NOT elected for that very reason, I understand your comments. Please understand though that John Lewis out of ALL the "black politicians" to speak out, his remarks are the most relevant. Mc Cain knows this and knows he's been called out by a man he greatly admires! This was needed to put him on notice and quell this madness before we have an incident we can't turn back from.

He is not complaining by the way, he's LIVED this and knows the history and if YOU and others don't know or don't find out the history then we are doomed to repeat it!. Check out Wikipedia and Google on the subjects of John Lewis and the climate in the country around the time of George Wallace. Do your research and it will qwell your concerns.

Sarah Palin palling around with 60's radical David Horowitz at a fundraiser in Philadelphia where people, according to news reports, paid $25,000 to attend? Is this true?

Did the campaign take his money? What's the story?

No kidding! My husband and I have lived pretty peacefully these eleven years with our differing political views, but this election is taking a toll! Palin, Iraq, and health care have been my biggest gripes against McCain, although the zenophobic rhetoric being used in the Palin/McCain campaign has now been added to that list. My husband's biggest gripe against Obama has been and remains taxes. We make over $250,000 a year, so we will be paying more taxes, and my husband doesn't believe he should have to, considering that we live well below our means and give a large amount of money to charity.

DAVID HOROWITZ is a nationally known author and lifelong civil rights activist. He was one of the founders of the New Left in the 1960s and editor of its largest magazine, Ramparts. In the 1970s he created the Oakland Community Learning Center, an inner city school for disadvantaged children that was run by the Black Panther Party. In the 1990s he created the Individual Rights Foundation, which led the battle against speech codes on college campuses, and compelled the entire “president’s cabinet” of the University of Minnesota to undergo five hours of sensitivity training in the First Amendment for violating the free speech rights of its students. In 1996 he was a spokesman for the California Civil Rights Initiative, which barred government from discriminating against “or granting preferential treatment to any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin.” This year he has joined Ward Connerly’s campaign to pass a Racial Privacy Initiative. This is an anti-racial profiling initiative that would prevent government agencies from asking citizens about their race. David Horowitz is an outspoken opponent of censorship and racial preferences, and a defender of the rights of minorities and other groups under attack -- including the rights of blacks, gays, women, Jews, Muslims, Christians and white males.

My questions are: How did this man get through the door of a rally with a monkey that had an Obama sticker on its forehead? How long had he been standing there without anyone taking it from him?

My husband is a Republican and infuriated that this kind of behavior is going unchecked at Republican rallies. Until Republicans stand up to people like this, there are going to be a lot of people on the outside, looking in at the party, wondering what the hell is going on.

How about having Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott, located in Ft. Myers Florida come on stage in full uniform with his gun and spout out "Barack Hussein Obama" to reinforce the lie that Barack is a Muslim (when in fact he was born a Christian, born into a Christian family, raised a Christian and anyone who has spent any time with him, old friends, classmates, knows he's a Christian). That this sheriff is up for re-election, and, his office has not punished him at all. Everything I know about elected officials in certain positions, they are supposed to stay away from politics because it confuses the publics trusts "well if HE'S for that guy, he won't be fair to ME." I cannot believe and have never seen a sheriff come out to a politic campaign in full uniform with a gun--he is trying to intimate and be threatening. I will never ever vacation anywhere near or in Florida, and, people should call Mike Scott's office (internal affairs, whoever is his superiorS) call that office or write letters of complaints--but note that Florida's policy is that if you email them, their law states your emails will not remain private. So call and write, I sure am. Remember this IS the very state that was stolen from Gore, right? America! WE HAVE TO STAND STRONG TOGETHER! Or divided they will defeat us.

My first questions is: Who in the 60s was not ignited and angry at our government for a failed policy in Vietnam. Ayers took action (albeit too radical), he was imprisoned, he served his time, and after his release, he got a college education. QUICK JUDGING PEOPLE ON THEIR PAST.

Second, George W. Bush can be classified as a terrorist as he has allowed our armed forces to reduce countries to rubble in pursuit of a terrorist leader he has had so many chances to capture, but for some reason decided to steer us into Iraq based on half-truths....THAT, to me is more of a terrorist than anything I've ever seen. Because of Bush and his puppy McCain, we are now the LEAST respected country in the world...THE WORLD, GET IT???

I will call all these angry, name-calling rePIGlicans what they really are - RACIST & UNINFORMED. They have taking Palin's predjuciced truth-omitting statements and helped her sow the seed of hatred. You call Obama a terrorist, I call you veiled with racism and I think people should take responsibility for their OWN feelings instead of trying to make themselves better by portraying someone as evil and an America-hater.....

Obama is the embodiment of the American dream, rising from nothing but the undying love of his mother and support of family to become something more than he probably ever thought possible. He has inspired me and so many others that America can be GREAT again.
