John Lewis

Georgia congressman and Civil Rights leader John Lewis, reacting to the increasingly incendiary atmosphere at McCain-Palin campaign rallies, condemned the GOP for using tactics that are creating a mood not unlike the one created by George Wallace, the former segregationist governor and presidential candidate. Lewis accused the Republicans of "sowing the seeds of hatred and division," and warned the McCain campaign that they are "playing with fire:"

"As one who was a victim of violence and hate during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, I am deeply disturbed by the negative tone of the McCain-Palin campaign," Lewis said in a statement. "Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse."

The veteran Democrat even invoked one of the most divisive figures in recent U.S. history. "During another period, in the not too distant past, there was a governor of the state of Alabama named George Wallace who also became a presidential candidate. George Wallace never threw a bomb. He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who were simply trying to exercise their constitutional rights. Because of this atmosphere of hate, four little girls were killed on Sunday morning when a church was bombed in Birmingham, Alabama," said Lewis.

He warned, "As public figures with the power to influence and persuade, Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are playing with fire, and if they are not careful, that fire will consume us all. They are playing a very dangerous game that disregards the value of the political process and cheapens our entire democracy. We can do better. The American people deserve better."

The McCain campaign reacted quickly to push back against Lewis' statement:

Congressman John Lewis' comments represent a character attack against Governor Sarah Palin and me that is shocking and beyond the pale. The notion that legitimate criticism of Senator Obama's record and positions could be compared to Governor George Wallace, his segregationist policies and the violence he provoked is unacceptable and has no place in this campaign. I am saddened that John Lewis, a man I've always admired, would make such a brazen and baseless attack on my character and the character of the thousands of hardworking Americans who come to our events to cheer for the kind of reform that will put America on the right track.

I call on Senator Obama to immediately and personally repudiate these outrageous and divisive comments that are so clearly designed to shut down debate 24 days before the election. Our country must return to the important debate about the path forward for America.

The Obama campaign declined to compare McCain's campaign with that of Wallace's, but backed Lewis' warning against the "hateful rhetoric" being used at some McCain-Palin campaign rallies:

Senator Obama does not believe that John McCain or his policy criticism is in any way comparable to George Wallace or his segregationist policies. But John Lewis was right to condemn some of the hateful rhetoric that John McCain himself personally rebuked just last night, as well as the baseless and profoundly irresponsible charges from his own running mate that the Democratic nominee for President of the United States 'pals around with terrorists.' As Barack Obama has said himself, the last thing we need from either party is the kind of angry, divisive rhetoric that tears us apart at a time of crisis when we desperately need to come together. That is the kind of campaign Senator Obama will continue to run in the weeks ahead.

The criticism from Lewis is especially sharp considering McCain has called him one of the "wisest" men he knows, one whose advice he would seek should he win the presidency.

Just caught this article in the London Times! Funny I think that UK and Canadian news outlets are covering the US prez race better than US ones are. This article basically says that McCain is a better human being than his campaign. Palin and half his staff want to go down the hate route but McCain and the other have want to run a respectful candidacy! The man has lost control of his own campaign, doesnt say much for the kind of prez he would make! Checkout the article! Worrying to say the least!

When I saw McCain telling that woman that Obama was a "decent family man", I wondered if he was embarrassed by and ashamed of Palin's attacks. It's possible; I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm sure he regrets putting that vicious little hellraiser on his ticket.

The statement from the McCain campaign is pure theater. And as despicable as the campaign's tactics.

I am, however, always impressed by the ability of the Obama campaign to state a harsh truth while maintaining dignity.

And, of course, the courage of John Lewis is unassailable. We needed a wise and experienced voice like his to lend some perspective to this situation. His statement is strong and his warning has context. I doubt the McCain campaign will pay attention. But hopefully, the majority of Americans will.

nellie, I was thinking the same thing...that it was just so Rovian -- the way they simply deny the obvious and accuse the opposition of doing the very same things that they are being accused of. It is disgusting and America will be renewed when such toxic and fraudulent campaign tactics are recognized and rejected.

How ironic, I had said almost the exact same thing the day before. I had just called my son and told him, welcome to the 60s! I lived through them and what I am seeing in response, primarily to Palin, is the exact same atmosphere that existed then.

Kennedy and King weren't shot because the sun was out on those days; someone had stirred the pot to boiling. Fear and loathing was everywhere. Of course, he/she/they never faced a single charge for any of it.

Lewis~ " ... George Wallace who also became a presidential candidate. George Wallace never threw a bomb. He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans ... "

Lewis is very clear that the climate Wallace help create is similar to the type of attitudes being stimulated by McCain and Palin ! This is true and the more we recognize the stereotypes being thrown around by the GOP for what they are ... racist ... the better to stop this negative campaigning! Get to the issues!!!

You know full well what he's saying,McCain could have said something right away and nipped it in the bud.Now that public outrage has forced him to say something, he still allows these same attacks with his own surrogates. He's responsible for the tenor of his campaign and he didn't think there was anything wrong or it was important to stop the character assassination as long as he was up in the polls. You can't start this kind of behavior then tell everyone to just stop and expect that freight train to come to a dead stop,it's called momentum, and anyone with "experience" knows that.

What's racist about what Mr. Lewis said. I why is the senator refereing to this a charater attack. Senator McCain is a little naive. He seems to underestimate the "nature" of a mob mentalities. He knows, that if Obama was to show up at one of those events just after he and Palin' rhetoric, that those people would try to harm him. You can not say the same for McCain showing up after a Obama/Binden stump.

This is not an attack on the character of McCain. This is an attack of McCains judgment to insight instead of enlight. This is what happens when you get people all wriled up.

THIS IS NOT CLAIMING THAT MCCAIN IS RACIST.

McCain is again, just out of touch. He is out of touch with deep seated anger that some of these people have. He is playing with fire, just like Clinton. She was playing with fire. She and he spoke to crowds of people that even they had to be surprised about. That's why they were so convinced that Obama could win.

MDAZES. RACISM WILL END WHEN ALL GOOD AMERICANS DECIDE TO END IT. We are almost there. If we werent, McCain and Palin's filth would have turned the polls for them. Instead, it's burying them.

What does this say? it says to this military veteran that most Americans are too smart AND TOO TOLERANT these days for this kind of trash talk.
God bless the decent folks who turn their hearts from this evil attempt to regurgitate our worst days.

The McC camp can take their pho*ny, righteous indignation and sanctimony and sh*ove it! Just minutes after saying this in their repudiation of Mr. Le wis,

"I call on Senator Obama to immediately and personally repudiate these outrageous and divisive comments that are so clearly designed to shut down debate 24 days before the election. Our country must return to the important debate about the path forward for America,"

one of his campaign surrogates was on MS NB C with Schuster claiming that Pa lin and Mc C have every right to spew their hat*e filled rhetoric, that O is indeed a terr orist collaborator, etc. etc. He was as strident, if not more so, than P alin. Schuster gave him 3 opportunities to walk back his comments, which seemed to contradict the McC camp, but instead he chose to repeat the claims claims again, with impunity, unapologetically.

We are seeing for ourselves how a country can be turned into what German became. We need to push back against this type of rhetoric. Politicians need to push back. The media needs to push back. And of course, the public is the most important force in shutting down this kind of hatred.

To anyone who can possibly still be undecided at this time, please think about how each of the candidates is running his campaign.

I have a lot of respect for David Gergen -- he's intelligent, analytical and has a ton of experience in both GOP and Dem administrations (Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Clinton). He is now professor of public service and director of the Center for Public Leadership at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and senior political analyst for CNN.

He recently said on CNN that people can get a lot of insight about how a candidate will govern by how their campaigns operate in the last month leading up to the election. I think that is really important and that the evidence is clear: McCain is flailing around wildly, lurching from one tactic to the next with no clear direction, relying on negative campaigning instead of focusing on issues. Obama is steady, focused, calm and full of energy and passion for helping this country regain its confidence and leadership. I really believe if a person looks at the campaigns objectively, there is only one choice for who can get us moving to where we need to be.

Avoiding the issues as usual, GOP seeks to turn the blame for it's own tone back on Obama by demanding that he denounce those who denounce McCain. Obama's response was pitch-perfect.

Agree, GIBill. The GOP is responsible for the hate message it put out there and the venom it whipped up. Now they want to deal with the blowback of that by saying it's Obama's responsibility to "repudiate" people for calling them on their hate and fear mongering? They are worse than children when it comes to blaming others for their inappropriate behavior and reprehensible tactics. Their whole campaign is out of control.

Even McCain's "admonishing" of some crowd members the other day is half-backed and insincere. He wants it both ways.

The woman who called Obama "an arab" to Mccain's face? Mccain said, "no, ma'am, he's decent..." BUT, he never said emphatically, 'all these rumors about obama being a muslim are not true,' etc. so, he sort of helps perpetuate that lie while also trying to appear as if he's trying to damp down the anger in his crowds. no matter what, it's taking precious time away from his message, whatever that is, and he looked even more sad and feeble in those exchanges.

John Lewis is absolutely right!! He should be applauded for saying the truth. I believe the statement from the Obama camp is measured and intelligent. McCain may not be as bad as Wallace was, but a lot of people are,and he has done nothing but encourage them. If McCain is offended by John Lewis's remarks, just too bad..he should be giving them some serious thought, and try to understand the consequences of his thoughtless actions..we have had a president who is totally unaware and careless of consequences for eight years...we do not need another one.

Lewis is more aware of the makeup and mindset of the McCain-Palin organization than, apparently, McCain is. Perhaps he should have offered more examples to support his opinion.

Remember the Peglar quote from Palin's acceptance speech? Frank Rich wrote a particularly telling op-ed piece:
