I Like ItI Don’t Like It
John Lewis

Georgia congressman and Civil Rights leader John Lewis, reacting to the increasingly incendiary atmosphere at McCain-Palin campaign rallies, condemned the GOP for using tactics that are creating a mood not unlike the one created by George Wallace, the former segregationist governor and presidential candidate. Lewis accused the Republicans of "sowing the seeds of hatred and division," and warned the McCain campaign that they are "playing with fire:"

"As one who was a victim of violence and hate during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, I am deeply disturbed by the negative tone of the McCain-Palin campaign," Lewis said in a statement. "Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are sowing the seeds of hatred and division, and there is no need for this hostility in our political discourse."

The veteran Democrat even invoked one of the most divisive figures in recent U.S. history. "During another period, in the not too distant past, there was a governor of the state of Alabama named George Wallace who also became a presidential candidate. George Wallace never threw a bomb. He never fired a gun, but he created the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans who were simply trying to exercise their constitutional rights. Because of this atmosphere of hate, four little girls were killed on Sunday morning when a church was bombed in Birmingham, Alabama," said Lewis.

He warned, "As public figures with the power to influence and persuade, Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin are playing with fire, and if they are not careful, that fire will consume us all. They are playing a very dangerous game that disregards the value of the political process and cheapens our entire democracy. We can do better. The American people deserve better."

The McCain campaign reacted quickly to push back against Lewis' statement:

Congressman John Lewis' comments represent a character attack against Governor Sarah Palin and me that is shocking and beyond the pale. The notion that legitimate criticism of Senator Obama's record and positions could be compared to Governor George Wallace, his segregationist policies and the violence he provoked is unacceptable and has no place in this campaign. I am saddened that John Lewis, a man I've always admired, would make such a brazen and baseless attack on my character and the character of the thousands of hardworking Americans who come to our events to cheer for the kind of reform that will put America on the right track.

I call on Senator Obama to immediately and personally repudiate these outrageous and divisive comments that are so clearly designed to shut down debate 24 days before the election. Our country must return to the important debate about the path forward for America.

The Obama campaign declined to compare McCain's campaign with that of Wallace's, but backed Lewis' warning against the "hateful rhetoric" being used at some McCain-Palin campaign rallies:

Senator Obama does not believe that John McCain or his policy criticism is in any way comparable to George Wallace or his segregationist policies. But John Lewis was right to condemn some of the hateful rhetoric that John McCain himself personally rebuked just last night, as well as the baseless and profoundly irresponsible charges from his own running mate that the Democratic nominee for President of the United States 'pals around with terrorists.' As Barack Obama has said himself, the last thing we need from either party is the kind of angry, divisive rhetoric that tears us apart at a time of crisis when we desperately need to come together. That is the kind of campaign Senator Obama will continue to run in the weeks ahead.

The criticism from Lewis is especially sharp considering McCain has called him one of the "wisest" men he knows, one whose advice he would seek should he win the presidency.

Georgia congressman and Civil Rights leader John Lewis, reacting to the increasingly incendiary atmosphere at McCain-Palin campaign rallies, condemned the GOP for using tactics that are creating a moo...

I am absolutely ashamed of what America is exhibiting right now. Racial hatred, intolerance and divisiveness haven't been this apparent in my lifetime. I never dreamed we'd go back in time but it seems as if we have.

One racist parking lot owner in North Carolina forbids Obama supporters from parking their cars.

The Bush-McCain campaign is grasping at straws- after we've just lost $ 9 trillion of national wealth they are talking about Ayers?

Listen up, my friends -
Comments by Georgia's Rep. John Lewis threatening Sen. McCain with fiery consequences are so obviously disingenuous as to be laughable. Lewis wants to silence McCain so that more of the facts
about the real Obama and his agenda for America do not come to light. This can be called aiding and abetting and in some instances could be unlawful..

Not apparent or true that Senator McCain and the governor have gone too far in critcizing Obama. They've not yet gone far enough. According to reliable sources (Jerome Corsi, PhD, Harvard, for one - The Obama Nation) there are many Obama secrets from the past still trying to make their way into public discussion before our presidential election. Obvious that Democrat John Lewis' comments are designed to be a preemptive strike against the Republican candidates, with little or no basis in probability. Regrettably this old civil rights warrior wants to stifle truthful and legitimate discourse about the real Obama in the interest of personal and political solidarity. Can anyone candidly " say ain't so?"

Actually McCain wants to stifle any truthful and legitimate conversation. If his accusations were to actually drift beyond the shadowy enclave of innuendo, he'd be exposed as a man who has been insanely trying to bring forth fire from wisps of smoke.
His hope lays in people who take thread as whole clothe and define truth as what they believe as opposed to believing what is true; who don't believe in Corsi because of credibility, but because of preconceived conceptions.

The story is always "We don't know what it is, but there's something else and it will be exposed". And the result is always nothing. How long can a person be lead around by his nose like that?

Apparently, a long time. These are the same wonderful folks who are still waiting for the (non-existant) "whitey" video. Somehow, they hope against hope that after all the time Obama has been on the national radar (since his speech at the 2004 DNC), through the primaries when Clinton brought up Ayers, and all the Rev Wright hype, that there's some hidden, definitive, destructive dirt that nobody has yet found.

He's black, isn't he? There's got to be something!

But it's 'not about race'. I'm beyond disgusted with McCain-Palin. Nov 4 can't come soon enough.

Vote!

you're really clueless. jerome Corsi was declared unreliable by pretty much anybody who took the time to research the facts behind his assertions about Obama. Much, if not all of the book he wrote have been debunked a very long time ago. I'm not against talking about Obama's record but let's be serious. They raised the Ayers issue knowing that there was nothing of substance between the 2 men. They know that, and so far they have no proof but keep pushing the issue. I think if Obama had been a terrorist he wouldn't be running for the presidency. GET YOUR BRAIN TO WORK!

Irisda and likeminded others -
Trying to get the old brain working and follow your logic.. Are you saying in a like manner that the 9/11 middle easterners were not terroists or they would not have crashed planes into the World Trade Center? Help me with this.

The book I referred to (Obama Nation by Jerome Corsi, PhD) was released in August
2008 by publisher Simon and Shuster, not a long time ago. Not aware of any debunking,
not even by the Obama people even though it's No. 1 on NY Times best seller list. It's
worth reading though you may not accept all the information and thinking provided.

Dr. Corsi is a well educated and seasoned political scientist and author, with a 1972 doctorate from Harvard. Some reportedly don't like some of his writings. So what else is new? But my sense is that he loves this American homeland as much as you and I, and does not want to see it destroyed. The book is well resourced. My prayer is that it will be helpful to us as we try and make wise and informed decisions when we go to the polls on Nov. 4th, Rep. John Lewis and his fire this time notwithstanding. I found it in hardcover at one of my favorite bookstores in California at $19.95 plus tax.

Oh, my God! Referring to that amateurish tissue of lies, innuendo, and filth that Corsi came out with in an attempt to swift-boat Obama is really beyond belief! The fact that it sold a lot of copies proves Henry Mencken's insistence that no one ever went broke by underestimating the intelligence or taste of the American Public.

The McCain-Palin campaign has gone too far.

Unfortunately, we are being told again that Senator Obama doesn't see America as we do. To persuade us McCain is channeling another Senator named Joseph McCarthy. Just replace the word "communist" with "terrorist". McCain-Palin are saying that they're only questioning Senator Obama's "judgement and truthfulness" regarding his association with Ayers.

Sadly, a lot of individuals and media outlets have taken the bait. It is disturbing that anybody would entertain the idea that a United States Senator would condone terrorism or be a sleeper agent himself.

Since 9/11 we've been waging a global war on terror. As Americans it has become our patriotic duty to shed terrorist blood. For Senator McCain and Governor Palin to wrecklessly use the word "terrorist" and in any way, shape, or form tie it to Senator Obama is not only politically wrong, but morally wrong.
It's disappointing that the media and others have dissmissed these attacks as just the same ol' dirty politics.

Finally, someone has spoken out strongly against them. John Lewis is right, the American people deserve better.

McCain keeps reminding all of us that he was cleared of all charges dealing with the Keating Five, but he is quick to point out Obama’s lack of character and judgment as it relates to his relationship with Bill Ayers. Here are a couple of points of interest to consider when questioning Obama’s character and judgment:

Bill Ayers was cleared on charges from an incident that happened over 40 years ago when Obama was 8 years old!
Obama had absolutely nothing to do with the Weatherman organization.

Charles Keating was found guilty from an incident that happened 17 years ago when McCain was 55 years old!
John McCain had plenty to do with the Keating Five.

Moral of the story! John McCain wasn’t found guilty, but his associate was!

So do you really want to talk about guilt by association?

Can you say Hypocrisy?

Is it her ability to articulate her views? Is it her stylish glasses? Her ability to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help her god? Is it her knowledge of Soviet/American relationships? Her nice ass? Her extensive reading list of periodicals? Her ability to bring out the worst in those with an intelligence quotient below 65?
How was it that you were able to spell hilarious correctly?

Never in my life have I been so aware of how poorly a campaign for POTUS has been run. Even if it was clear their message wasn't hitting or they were going to lose it was never apparent that any other candidate's campaign itself was so totally disfunctional.

How a campaign is run seems the only true indicator of how a President will run the country. It seems a mercy that we discovered that McCain has no ability whatsoever to lead and strategize before he really had a chance to run the country.

If we should consider listening to Lewis because McCain has called him the wisest man he knows, then consider the comments made by Senator Biden regarding how he would rather run with McCain than Obama....funning how quotes go full circle.

Biden never said that...before he was chosen VP he said that he would run with McCain if he had the opportunity to do so...of course that was before this NEW John McCain showed up...you know the one who wants to win at any cost...Biden said he would run with the John McCain who put COUNTRY first!!! Two different John McCains...but the main point is Biden never said he would rather run with McCain than Obama...again, somebody twisting WORDS!!!

My best guess is the GOP, recognizing that McCain cannot possibly win regardless of what they do, will throw McCain/Palin under the bus and try to distance themselves from the hatemongers and hope they can survive some of the other political races,

While Mr McCain obviously does not endorse the views of some of these racists that attend his rallies he does have a responsibility to have some semblance of decorum at his rallies! When his own crowds boo him for mentioning anything positive about Mr Obama what kind of message does that send? When crowds at his rallies last week were screaming "Terrorist", "Traitor", "Treason", "Kill Him" where was John McCain? Even If he did not hear the remarks when they were made he had an obligation at his next rally to address the issue & let his supporters know how he felt about some of their conduct. Dissapointingly but not surprisingly John McCain did nothing his silence amounted to tacit support which emboldened the crowds to become more vocal, more negative & nastier. He did not address the issue until it confronted him but by then it was the proverbial "snowball rolling downhill" This is what happens when you have two presenters at your rallies on successive days using Mr Obama's middle name Hussein as a racial epithet, This is what happens when your VP candidate is trying to connect the word terrorist to an african-american candidate with a middle eastern sounding name in a deliberate attempt to stoke fear, division, stereotypes, prejudices & hate, Lastly this is what happens when your whole campaign strategy regresses to painting your rival as "different" in a blatant attempt to make them seem un-american, un-patriotic & foreign instead of focusing on policy differences.

What do you stand for or the “Black” conservative

I have a seat at the table; that proves all is fair.
Of poverty and struggle, I do not care.
I got mine, get yours is the meme.
Some folks forget how they got theirs it seems.

A man once describe those who grovel at a masters feet and dwell in the house.
He said they identified with everything that came out of an enslavers’ mouth.
He talked about the spirit of those who toiled and languished in the field.
If the masters’ house was burning, these people righteously prayed for a wind of ill will.
He went on to say that if the dreadful, hateful, and murderous master were to become ill or sick.
House inhabitants thought that I meant “we”, their brainwashing was so complete, their ignorance so thick.
Who are the house dwellers -- Those defending not upper room mentalities, but those of rat-infested cellars?
Who are these weak-minded sellouts of principles and morals?
They are a type perhaps as diverse in appearance and plentiful in number as sea coral.
They are of the mind that it is all about self.
They do not care about anyone else.
They are of the mind that they must be blind to what is painfully clear.
They so badly want to “make it” that sellout serves to quell their failure fears.

Vacuity of mind and heart is the problem.
The heroin of sellout has The “Black Conservative” scratchin’ and noddin’.

You're trying to compare apples and oranges. There's a difference between a minority occasionally complaining about how they've been treated by the majority and someone from the majority trying to incite a riot amongst others of the same majority.

Trinity is not a hate-filled church. Parts of America however, form a cathedral or sanctuary of hate. Reverend Wright is a man of love with the courage to serve up the bitter medicine of truth. Do not confuse truth with hate. Do not confuse a message that points out hate with hate itself.

Hate cares not for country. Hate is selfish. Wright spoke out for purposes of healing the country he loves. Racists speak out for purposes of destroying the country they happen to be in.
