Bloomberg:

John McCain is circling the wagons.

The Republican presidential candidate, with few prospects in Democratic-leaning states, is struggling to hold on to the states George W. Bush won in 2004.

Iowa and New Mexico, where Bush got the narrowest of victories in the last election, are moving into Obama's column. That would shave 12 electoral votes from Bush's 2004 total of 286 -- 270 are needed to claim the White House.

While McCain is forming his wagons in a circle, he's still painfully unaware that the approaching enemy isn't going to be firing arrows.
Their weapon of choice...text messages and emails.

John McCain, it would be just another example of your erratic temparement if you shift course again for the umpteenth time. You probably pay good money to pay your campaign lobbyists, I mean strategists, so you really should listen to them. Stay the course, focus on the character non-issue, and stop talking about things you know nothing about, such as decency and the economy. And scare us all with Obama's taxes. Oooooooh!

This article is pretty useful. If McCain is no longer trying to win, but to circle the wagons to prevent a rout, then this election could get a lot more nasty. He can call for a ceasefire on the personal attacks to try to protect Palin, who has been damaged by the Branchflower findings, if he is going for a win. The attacks on him and Obama probably cancel each other out, but the official finding that Palin is irresponsible should be a problem for undecided voters to dismiss. If he is not trying to reach additional voters but to secure his base then it makes sense to get even dirtier in his attacks to further demonise Obama and so innoculate the existing supporters. The mad dog attacks will repel the fence sitters, the media and anyone who is not a die-hard Republican, but will probably work. He has an interesting choice to make and probably by the debate on Wednesday we will see which way he pivots. McCain is a wily old dog and you have to give him credit for putting up a stiff fight on very adverse terrain. My guess is that he will go for the win.

Team Obama is on offense in Indiana! It's a beautiful fall day here in Northern IN, unseasonably warm with an above average high of 80 degrees predicted. Could be our last warm weekend of the year. I am at work at the moment - had to put in extra time to make sure I don't get laid off, you know -- working harder and harder only to see my real income shrinking day by day it seems. My coworkers are worried about how they will pay to heat their homes this winter. I am a college-educated white woman in a white-collar profession. I will be going out to canvass for Obama-Biden in about an hour. Devoting 4-5 hours of my precious leisure time for OUR campaign on such a beautiful day is not something I do lightly, however, given the stakes of this election, it is something I cannot afford NOT to do. Keep up the great work, everyone! We will prevail!

His problems go back many years. A true maverick would have refused to drop bombs on a country that had never threatened the US and was no threat to the US.

The GOP has been wildly successful in the past in getting middle class and working class voters to vote against their own best interests. Let's hope this year it won't work for them.

McCain is always on the defense.. it will only be like that for four more weeks or so before he is done. I can't wait for this circus to be over with.

This story is old news. RCP gives Obama a solid lead of >5% in every "Kerry" state, plus double digit leads in IA and NM. He is up by over 5 points now in VA, so that gives Obama 277 EVs where he is ahead by 5+ points. When you force the remaining states, Obama ranges between 354 and 386 EVs, which is somewhere between a rout and a blowout.

Unless McCain dramatically improves his national number, the states won't matter. If Obama is solidly ahead with 277 EVs, then McCain has already lost before the "battleground" states have a say.

Meanwhile, Obama has been trending upwards in the national polling since he win on Tuesday, and his lead may be closer to 10 points than to 6 points, which is where the above state polling took place. State polls always lag national polls, so look to see Obama pull further ahead on the EVs, or at least solidify is leads like he is in PA and NH, which now look +12 points for Obama, or Michigan where is heads +16.
