PHILADELPHIA — His backers feeling increasingly confident, Democrat Barack Obama made a slight nod to his Republican rival on Saturday and asked voters to have faith in him as the next president.

Even as he criticized John McCain's economic policies, Obama acknowledged that the GOP nominee has asked his supporters to temper their attacks on him.

"I appreciated his reminder that we can disagree while still being respectful of each other," Obama told thousands of supporters at the first of four outdoor rallies in Philadelphia.

"Sen. McCain has served this country with honor," he said two hours later, in the city's Germantown neighborhood. "He deserves our thanks for that."

At a town-hall event Friday in Minnesota, McCain took the microphone from a woman who said Obama is an Arab. McCain said, "No, ma'am," and he called Obama "a decent, family man."

McCain drew boos at the same event when he told a supporter who expressed fear at the prospect of Obama's election that the Democrat is a "person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States."

Those reassurances aside, McCain's TV ads continue to attack Obama sharply. Some hit his ties to a former radical who co-founded a violent anti-war group in the 1960s. Yet on Saturday at an event in Iowa, McCain didn't mention the past association and focused on their policy disagreements.

Obama referred to the ads Saturday. "We've seen rough stuff on the TV from them," he said. "I can take it for four more weeks," but the nation cannot take "four more years of Bush-McCain economics."

"I will be a president who puts you first," he said, asking voters not to lose hope in the economy before President Bush can be replaced.

Polls show Obama leading in several battleground states, and some of his top surrogates feel victory is nearly in reach.

"The one thing we can't let happen is for us to be overconfident," Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell told donors at a Friday fundraiser, where he introduced Obama.

Although Obama says anything can happen in the campaign's final 24 days, hints of his optimism are creeping into his unscripted remarks.

"In some ways this is a celebratory event" as "we're now coming to the end of what has been a two-year process, an extraordinary journey," Obama said at a second Philadelphia fundraiser Friday night. The host, Comcast executive David L. Cohen, said the two events raised more than $5 million.

As 250 major donors ate beet salad and mahi-mahi under a huge tent, Obama seemed to look ahead to his first term as president.

"We're going to have to make some priorities, we're going to have to cut some things out," he said, referring to expensive goals such as improving health care, schools and college affordability.

"I'm going to be in some fights with my own Democratic Party in getting some of that done," he said.

Defying tradition in GOP-leaning states, he said, he is leading McCain in Montana and North Carolina. His lead in Virginia, which Democrats last carried in 1964, is 6 or 7 percentage points, he told the donors.

Obama added, however: "Who knows what can happen in the next 25 days?"

Democrats have carried Pennsylvania in recent presidential elections, although sometimes narrowly. McCain has campaigned aggressively in the state, but polls show Obama leading.

Democrats usually win huge margins in Philadelphia and try to minimize their losses in the state's smaller cities and more rural areas. Obama's barnstorming of Philadelphia was designed to drive his base's vote as high as possible.

Under a brilliant blue sky, Obama's four events here drew 60,000 people according to Philadelphia police, but it was impossible to verify the estimates. At some sites, thousands of people were unable to get through the gates. They stood on cars and craned their necks for a glimpse, sometimes blocks away. Crowds cheered Obama's motorcade as it arrived and left each site.

Obama read the same speech each time, but he ad-libbed a bit and seemed increasingly buoyant as the day progressed. Telling his favorite new story about buying pie from a Republican-leaning Ohio diner owner, he joked with a woman who called out from the Germantown crowd.

"You will make me some pie?" he asked. "What kind of pie do you make? Sweet potato pie?"

As the crowd roared, he poured it on. "We're going to have to have a sweet potato pie contest," he said. "I'll be the judge, because I want my sweet potato pie."

Don't get suckered in, they're as dirty as they ever were. Look at their surrogates & commercials

Will more Republicans denounce these tactics? Or is this it?

But who knows maybe next week he will be back at it.

Check to see if your voter registation is in order. Dont wait until election day when eveybody will be busy. Check now with your local office. Vote early if your state allows it. Take a friend or two the polling station. Volunteer at least one day to the Obama campaign .

Acorn is a non-partisan organisation that has been registering thousands of voters ,Democrats and Republicans over the years. They are not connected to any political party ,nor are they connected to the Obama campaign. A few employees short cut the system and registered voters that probably should not have been registered. THEIR BEHAVIOR HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ORGANISATION ITSELF.

Obama {paraphrased}: "They take pride in their ignorance".

If you knew anything about ACORN, 31Alpha, you'd see for yourself how baseless and outright WRONG your right-wing rhetoric really is.

ACORN is bound by rules to present ALL filled out application for registration forms collected to the election officials and not discriminate among them even when they know some are filled out by jokesters . THEY DO NOT APPROVE OR DENY WHICH FORMS ARE LEGITIMATE AND WHICH ARE NOT.

The process of APPROVING AND DENYING voter application for registration forms lies with the election officials, understand?

Sheesh.

The supporters of the president handed out machetes just before the Rwandan genocide. We know what happened after that. Is McCain starting some kind of riot that he can then blame on Obama?

McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds said "Some voters are using strong language because they are frustrated knowing that Barack Obama's plans to raise taxes during a down economy, and his spending plans, are the wrong answers to our economic crisis."

There he goes again with his senseless remarks. How can Tucker Bounds even suggest that McBlame's supporters recent outrageous outbursts are a result of Barack's policies unless he too believes that BO will be the next POTUS.

Why does Obama keep paying respect to McCain?
Doe he actually thinkMcCain was sincere in asking his supporters to be respectful?

McCain is racist and disgraceful. I cannot believe Obama is willing to overlook it!
Why is he so gullible? I am voting for Obama, but this has made me wonder if he will just believe anything and everything an enemy country's leader tells him! He has to be more discerning.

The only reason McCain backtracked is that he took notice that it was not working and the polls were reflecting this very fact. The only people energized by this rhetoric were the Conservative Base, when he already had! Independents and moderates are turned off by this and the ‘mob’ like behavior displayed to the entire nation this week... These folks are stuck in the 1950’s with their thinking...McCain has simply shown the rest of the Nation what many people already knew about him behind closed doors...he's a A---- Hole....

I wish Obama didn't feel that he has to comment on every move McCain makes good or bad. Why does he have to praise him for saying what he should have been saying all along? McCain only did it because he was getting heat for stirring up the crowd, getting it from all sides.

I adore Obama and think he will be a great president, but I just feel that this habit of doing a running day-by-day commentary on the day-by-day moves of the opposition, isn't always helpful. Let McCain sink in the polls and in the b@attleground states, as he is doing now, don't give him any help.

Obama doesn't need to keep on proving that he's a good man, that has been established; there is such a thing as taking politeness and accomodation too far.

Obama is speaking every day to different crowds. It would be a little unusual if he didn't talk about what's going on. He's just keeping it real. The point is not to praise McCain. The point is to emphasize the differences in their policies.

I just don't agree. Saying that he is appreciative of McCain's words is, in essence, praising an action of McCain's. And I think it's a mistake.

I said the same thing this morning. I would not have mentioned it . First of all I dont think its sincere on McCain's part, secondly this may let some of the independents say " oh ,you see McCain is not part of this mob behavior". Best to have just remain silent.

I would agree with your assessment if the average voter had a curiosity beyond the boob-tube and right-wing "hate-radio":

Doesn't it surprise you that there are those that still believe that Obama is Muslim...that he is "Arab"....that he is a "terrist"?

Ah, but abby, most Americans have willful ADD and together with corporate MSM, can quickly forget who Obama has proven himself to be, over and over again.

Just imagine what the tr0//s here would say if Obama kept silent about McCain's "defense" of him. The MSM *immediately* stood on watch to tape what Obama's initial reaction would be, hoping he'd do just that.

If Obama doesn't address the (sudden) generosity McCain showed, he'd be seen as "uppity", don't you think? The MSM would have a field day with that...over...and...over...and over again.

IMO, Obama did the smart thing, defusing the rabid corporate media simultaneously emphasizing in stark contrast to McPalin, his standing as a statesman and leader.

I am proud of him.

He does this because he has leadership skills and is letting the crowd know that he's aware of everything going on. He called out McCain for stirring hate, so why wouldn't he acknowledge something good? Barack cannot just be talked about, he has to take part in the political discourse and help shape the narrative himself. I think it's good what he's saying here.

McCain did the right thing yesterday. I hope that he did it for he sake of his supporters so that he will keep doing it. If he did it just for himself, he may return to inciting hate and violence whenever it seems convenient. I really wonder what finally got through to him.
It is fine and understandable for people to get angry. Especially when they are suffering and don't understand why. But the truth is John McCain doesn't really 'know' how to do all of the things he says he 'knows' how to do... or at least he doesn't seem to 'know how' to run a decent campaign and win. He really chose the wrong people to have on his campaign team. He chose the wrong VP. He has been all over the board with his strategies. He had is wife flat out lie to people on his behalf??!!!
I am sorry to see him sink so low. I hope he can find a way to move forward that has some integrity to it. So he can lose with some dignity.

So after days and days of hearing McCain and Palin talk about how un-American and scary Barack is supposed to be, what are their supporters supposed to think? That McCain and Palin lying before? That they're lying now? That they're being forced to say Barack is a decent guy?

Going down this bad bad road was just wrong-headed and bone-headed. And disrespectful to his opponent and office they both hope to fill.

For those of you who remember the 60's, as an adult or child as I, it was a horrible time in US history. Lives lost and hope diminished as a result of hatred.

This campaign has awaked the dosed haters of race. Times have changed since then and we need to be very aware of those changing times while awaking the hate. This time the outcome will be quite different. I want the Republican campaign to know that his time around please don’t expect decent people both black and white to just sit back and become merely observers, while you two (McCain/Palin single handedly try to destroy American. There is no honor or patriotism in hatred for anyone. As for you Sara you do not represent the itelligent women that are in America you are merely a pawn in The Republican game....Wake up, you need to get your family matters together . When Ed Rollins says McCain is on the verge of destroying his own party, people listen. Ed said the immediate problem is losing up to ten Senate seats, and McCain doesn't want that around his neck either. So, some of the adults in the party have TOLD the children to shut up, and go back to the card table and finish their broccoli. The knuckle-draggers will continue to ruin any chances he may have left, because of their lack of gray matter and civility. It's not conservative vs. liberal anymore. It's obscurant vs. enlightened. And that will be a greater battle because you never, ever pick a fight with an idiot. Can't win.....CFF
