PHILADELPHIA — His backers feeling increasingly confident, Democrat Barack Obama made a slight nod to his Republican rival on Saturday and asked voters to have faith in him as the next president.

Even as he criticized John McCain's economic policies, Obama acknowledged that the GOP nominee has asked his supporters to temper their attacks on him.

"I appreciated his reminder that we can disagree while still being respectful of each other," Obama told thousands of supporters at the first of four outdoor rallies in Philadelphia.

"Sen. McCain has served this country with honor," he said two hours later, in the city's Germantown neighborhood. "He deserves our thanks for that."

At a town-hall event Friday in Minnesota, McCain took the microphone from a woman who said Obama is an Arab. McCain said, "No, ma'am," and he called Obama "a decent, family man."

McCain drew boos at the same event when he told a supporter who expressed fear at the prospect of Obama's election that the Democrat is a "person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States."

Those reassurances aside, McCain's TV ads continue to attack Obama sharply. Some hit his ties to a former radical who co-founded a violent anti-war group in the 1960s. Yet on Saturday at an event in Iowa, McCain didn't mention the past association and focused on their policy disagreements.

Obama referred to the ads Saturday. "We've seen rough stuff on the TV from them," he said. "I can take it for four more weeks," but the nation cannot take "four more years of Bush-McCain economics."

Story continues below

"I will be a president who puts you first," he said, asking voters not to lose hope in the economy before President Bush can be replaced.

Polls show Obama leading in several battleground states, and some of his top surrogates feel victory is nearly in reach.

"The one thing we can't let happen is for us to be overconfident," Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell told donors at a Friday fundraiser, where he introduced Obama.

Although Obama says anything can happen in the campaign's final 24 days, hints of his optimism are creeping into his unscripted remarks.

"In some ways this is a celebratory event" as "we're now coming to the end of what has been a two-year process, an extraordinary journey," Obama said at a second Philadelphia fundraiser Friday night. The host, Comcast executive David L. Cohen, said the two events raised more than $5 million.

As 250 major donors ate beet salad and mahi-mahi under a huge tent, Obama seemed to look ahead to his first term as president.

"We're going to have to make some priorities, we're going to have to cut some things out," he said, referring to expensive goals such as improving health care, schools and college affordability.

"I'm going to be in some fights with my own Democratic Party in getting some of that done," he said.

Defying tradition in GOP-leaning states, he said, he is leading McCain in Montana and North Carolina. His lead in Virginia, which Democrats last carried in 1964, is 6 or 7 percentage points, he told the donors.

Obama added, however: "Who knows what can happen in the next 25 days?"

Democrats have carried Pennsylvania in recent presidential elections, although sometimes narrowly. McCain has campaigned aggressively in the state, but polls show Obama leading.

Democrats usually win huge margins in Philadelphia and try to minimize their losses in the state's smaller cities and more rural areas. Obama's barnstorming of Philadelphia was designed to drive his base's vote as high as possible.

Under a brilliant blue sky, Obama's four events here drew 60,000 people according to Philadelphia police, but it was impossible to verify the estimates. At some sites, thousands of people were unable to get through the gates. They stood on cars and craned their necks for a glimpse, sometimes blocks away. Crowds cheered Obama's motorcade as it arrived and left each site.

Obama read the same speech each time, but he ad-libbed a bit and seemed increasingly buoyant as the day progressed. Telling his favorite new story about buying pie from a Republican-leaning Ohio diner owner, he joked with a woman who called out from the Germantown crowd.

"You will make me some pie?" he asked. "What kind of pie do you make? Sweet potato pie?"

As the crowd roared, he poured it on. "We're going to have to have a sweet potato pie contest," he said. "I'll be the judge, because I want my sweet potato pie."

It would now be a brilliant move for Obama to send somone to each Palin/Mccain rally to yell out something devisive . The coverage is great by the media and it drowns out their message on Ayers etc.

Even more brilliant, play it straight, and march into the election with a landslide that buries the GOP for 20 years

And serves as a national repudiation to the Republican Party and it's supporters. A repudiation of their stilted platform and refusal to engage the majority of Americans in a meaningful discussion on how we might compromise the differences between us. A repudiation of the politics of hate and divisiveness which have characterized this and other recent elections. A repudiation of their claim to own a monopoly on "patriotrism" and "family values," when Democrats have as great a claim to those ideals. It is time to destroy them ideologically, in order that they may rebuild themselves into an honorable party that can be part of the solution to America's problems, not one of the causes.

Decent people would feel too uncomfortable being in the mist of those Mccain supporter because of the fear of them and the fear of being on camera with the ignorance...I think Mccain crowd handles this bravery of hate well all by themselves, they don't need nor could they get any Obama supporter to feel that comfortable

I'm starting to feel sorry for McCain. Eight years ago, he could not stand being around those "agents of intolerance" types. Now, after sucking up to them, in this go-around, he sees the type of people that they are. After the election, he'll sleep like a baby (wake up-cry-go to sleep-wake up-cry-go to sleep). He said he slept like a baby (like this) after getting beaten by Bush, he'll sleep like a baby not for the fact that he was beaten by Obama, but for the fact that he lost with the support (and campaign management) of these losers. There is only one thing worse, in sacrificing principles to get what you want. It's not getting what you you want, after sacrificing your principles..

Do NOT feel sorry, sir, for he has brought it on himself, been an adovate of it, and would have used it to the detriment of the vast majority of Americans, even those in his own party. Do not feel sorry at all, at least not until after November 4th.

I don't feel sorry for him. He's a big boy. He has free will. He has chosen to staff his campaign with people trained by the ones who smeared him in 2000. He has let his ambition to be President and his genuine disregard of Obama blind him to everything else.

I'm sick and tired of all this talk about Obama raising taxes.

The right-wingers used that mantra on Bill Clinton.... Ha! I would gladly take Clinton's economy over Bush's any day.

What really ticks me off, however, is how Obama doesn't really cram it back down on 'em, responding specifically to what it is they say. He responds, but by saying that 95% won't be taxed. That's not enough, sir.

Why don't you say, "It's not so much that I'm raising taxes, but that I'm no longer going to allow a TAX CUT for the companies that take our jobs overseas!!" THis is the approach we know you're using, Senator Obama. we know you're not an avid tax raiser.... So tell them about it a little more specifaclly, please!

When Obama is elected, they will spread hate rumors and whisper attacks like they did about Clinton: whitewater, Vance, all the rest

You can be sure that Obama will put his job, country, and reputation first.

The GOP places all of those things in the president, dead last

Check out McCain's plan for taking over bad mortgages. It will raise all of our taxes. While an element is already in the current package, there are far more restrictions around it, thus costing us less. McCain's plan means each and everyone of us will carry a very heavy burden. Even his advisors don't back it. It is important to learn about issues (don't follow McCain's plan of "we are not CNBC and we don't need to talk about the market because there is nothing we can do"), before you start posting. Read about what you can do. Listen to experts outside the political arena. Most agree that the only thing to do in a stalling economy is start spending by investing in infrastructure (to create jobs) and give a stimulus package that provides consumers with gas prices.. While it goes against Rebublican ideology, the only way to revive this economy is to let banks make deals with one another (you should like it, the government is out) and invest in infrastructure to give people jobs. Be informed, not insulting. For it is the shiniest example that you are letting others/ideology think for you.

I am an ardent Obama supporter. I realize that he is also a politician who is prone to making decisions because of political expediency.

However, there is no doubt about Obama’s sense of decency. His ability to look for the good in even those that question his very integrity is something very unusual in politics.

The unfortunate thing is that the voters are the ones who are short-changed when the candidates – McCain and Obama – talk about issues that have little bearing on their livelihood.

When the McCain campaign begins to focus on whether or not Obama is “American enough” instead of how his economic policies differ from O, it is “Joe six-pack” who looses out. The very middle-class folks McCain and Palin claim to speak out for are the same people who are adversely affected by the focus on “social issues”.

Someone said that the McCain campaign has “let the hatred genie” out of the bottle. I agree with that statement. Some of the folks who were televised going off on Obama at the McCain/Palin campaigns are scary….and remind me of the ilk of McVeigh and his right wing zealots.

McCain trying to cool the hatred is yet another Gimmick. If he really wants to clean up his campaign, then he should dump the hatemonger Palin, and fire his entire staff. Sure it would be political suicide, but at least he could regain the respect that most of the country has lost for him.

He could start to salvage his dignity and repair his reputation by dumping Palin, adding Romney or Pawlenty as his running mate, and purchasing fifteen minutes of TV time to apologize to the American electorate for the way he's allowed his campaign to run amuck and make a solemn vow to run an issues-based campaign. Of course, he'd have to fire most of his staff or they would undo any rehab effort....

It was time for McCain to put a stop to what his campaign was doing but I don't agree that he is returning to his Maverick style. This is another attempt to save his a**. He was looking pretty bad and I have no doubt that he was being called out by many of his peers and it might have finally occurred to him that if something were to happen (heaven forbid) he would be directly tied to it. This is another attempt to save himself. For all the talk about Obama and Chicago politics, his campaign is the one that has employed the most ruthless staff. At the same time he has also managed to employ some of the most inept staff. To me, he has shown what a McCain White House would look like and it isn't pretty.

One thing that is reassuring is that, despite the fact that the McCain-Plain Campaign is creating an increased security risk for the Obama family, the Obamas are remaining calm and positive. This indicates to me that they have confidence in the Secret Service people assigned to protect them.

Whoever is a praying person, say prayers for the safety of the Obama family and say prayers for the Secret Service people protecting the candidates.
