Governor Sarah Palin launched a harsh, frontal attack against Barack Obama on Saturday for the Senator's position on abortion rights.

Appearing in Pennsylvania, the Alaska Republican claimed that Obama had "unconditional support for unlimited abortion," was "vague and evasive on the subject," and held extreme views when it came to life. On several occasions, she took past Obama statements and positions greatly out of context.

Speaking before a generally rowdy Saturday morning crowd, Palin eagerly resurfaced one of the Democratic nominee's most memorable rhetorical flubs from this campaign, only to twist his intent and language.

"[Obama] said that a women shouldn't be quote, punished with a baby," declared Palin.

In actuality, Obama said that he did not want his nine and six year old daughters to be "punished with a baby" should they make a mistake. "I don't want them punished with an STD at the age of 16," he added. "You know, so it doesn't make sense to not give them information."

Later in her campaign rally, Palin accused Obama of supporting partial birth abortion.

"Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan said partial birth abortion was too close to infanticide," she said. "Sen Obama thinks it is a constitutional right, but he is wrong."

Truth be told, Obama has argued on the campaign trail that, "the state can properly restrict late-term abortions," as long as there are provisions "to protect the health of the mother." In the Illinois State Senate Obama voted against a bill that would criminalize the practice of doctors performing partial birth abortions.

In the days after Tuesday's presidential debate there was some complaining among conservatives that so little of the campaign dialogue had focused on social issues. Palin's appearance on Saturday suggests that - in addition to reprising Obama's association with Bill Ayers - the McCain ticket will be renewing the cultural wars through focus on issues like abortion. For its part the crowd in Johnston, Pennsylvania, responded to the red meat the Alaska Governor provided them.

Ironically due to their immoral and inhumane economic and social policies abortions are always highest under Republican administrations...!

It seems as th0ugh it's always those prea ching the m0ral high grou nd that are the most blatan t and common perpetrat0rs.

Why don't we talk abo ut how she flew from Texas to Alaska (on 2 planes) while in labor with her baby. I consider that way more irresp0nsible. Don't tell me she wa sn't trying to not-so-pas sively have a neg ative affect on her less than perfect b aby.

Abortion is about the only issue they have that will resonate with some voters. It is an issue that is dividing those of us in the churches as well.

If I may get personal here. I am a Catholic, secular Franciscan who is voting for Obama but has struggled. But for a roadmap, I also look to the charisms of St. Francis, vulnerable and humble, who during the time of the Crusades walked and rode to meet the Sultan, the "enemy". The Sultan did not change his stance, but he did say that if all Christians were like Francis, they would not be warring.

Too many Christians look at anyone who is for abortion rights as "the enemy". Other "enemies" are Planned Parenthood, etc. I am just wondering if we made a commitment not to treat those who disagree with us as the enemy and give them our graciousness along with our concern. What if we offered those who come in contact with women considering abortions to open our OWN homes to mothers/families contemplating abortion and who are vascillating, especially due to economic circumstances?

I'll take Obama who is willing to speak to the "enemy".

McCain/Palin want to obliterate anyone in their path that does not agree with them and portray us as unsavory and suspect, while they use those of us who want abortion to end to further their larger agenda that is not pro-life. They deny the living breathing Holy Spirit to change hearts.

Beautifully said. I have a special love and respect for St. Francis, for the Franciscans and the Jesuits. I love that they value critical thought, education, compassion and tolerance.

Since abortion will never be abolished (just driven underground if illegal) doesn't it make sense to support policies that enable a woman to choose life because she has medical insurance, because she can afford a college education for her children, because she has a living wage? Isn't the goal to reduce the number of abortions? If so, then the choice is obvious--Obama.

If the GOP doesn't shut these two idiots down and make them stop spouting lies, then the GOP deserves the stomping it's going to get in this election. McCain and Palin are so reckless, they don't even CARE what they say! They just open their mouths and start spewing. It's beneath contempt.

The election is lost. The GOP needs to shut these two down if they want a future after the election. They're allowing this horror show from alaska to drag them into a sewer they won't be able to crawl out of. The Gov. was obviously brought in to appeal to thier base, but with each day it seams clearer that she's appealing to her own base...which is something the GOP will regret.

I keep trying to post this.....

McCain is out on the trail now saying Oba.ma is "decent", while Sara is calling him a ba by ki lle r . I kind of assumed she'd go there. The only question is how ugly she will get in making this argument.

Third trimes ter abortions are not so common. Yet, she knows full well that it is inflamatory and calling it inf antic ide only makes it worse. She knows that people don't think or apply reason - they only react in a violently visceral way.

Contrary to what many Evangelicals believe, abortion is not rampant, nor has it been during the 35 years since its passing. It's a matter of CHOICE, one that millions of women did not nor will make. It would be a very hard choice for ANY woman. There are no easy answers.

Here we go again, Gov.! Why don't you accept responsibilities for your own shortfalls, and stop the lies and innuendos.

Thanks for the link. Seeing that it, I think it is hard for the media to say that race isn't an issue in this election. But I have hope... in my own rural Ohio home town there is a good, healthy dialog. Some racial bias ans slurs, yes, but many more people who are letting go of the old, hardened prejudice of their parents/grandparents.

Despite their best efforts to reignite the culture wars, I just don't think it's gonna fly this election cycle. There are too many real problems. People are scared to death of the economy, not of anyone's stand on abortion. The only choice in this election that will be an issue was John McCain's choice of this woman as his running mate.
