WASHINGTON — When Bill and Hillary Clinton take the stage Sunday at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, it will be the launch of an active campaign for their former nemesis Barack Obama in the home stretch of the 2008 presidential race.

The nation's best known and most powerful Democrats for nearly two decades, the former first couple is getting used to a new role: cheerleaders for Obama, who vanquished Hillary Clinton last spring in a Democratic primary contest for the ages.

Whatever recriminations the Clintons may still harbor from that long battle seem to have been nudged aside as they campaign in earnest for the Democratic ticket.

The New York senator and the former president will appear with Obama's running mate, Joe Biden, at a rally Sunday in Scranton, a working class town that has assumed something of an outsize role in the presidential race.

Biden was born in Scranton and lived there for several years as a child, while Hillary Clinton's father grew up in the town and is buried there. Both Biden and Clinton have emphasized their Scranton roots to illustrate their connection to blue collar voters.

After the rally, the Clintons will follow separate itineraries through presidential battleground states. They will also campaign on behalf of Democratic House and Senate candidates across the country.

Bill Clinton, who worked tirelessly for his wife during the primaries, seemed to take her loss more personally. Nonetheless, he gave Obama his full-throated endorsement at the Democratic convention in August. But he began stumping for the Illinois senator only recently, appearing at fundraisers and headlining two major events in Florida earlier this month.

After the Scranton rally, the former president was headed to Richmond and Roanoke, Virginia. He also planned events in the next few days in Ohio and Nevada, battleground states he won in 1992 and again in 1996.

Hillary Clinton was scheduled to hold a fundraiser for Obama on Sunday night in Philadelphia and planned a rally for him Monday in Montgomery County, a Philadelphia suburb rich in swing voters.

Clinton trounced Obama by 10 points in last spring's Pennsylvania primary, largely due to her strength among white working class voters. Sensing opportunity, Republican John McCain has campaigned actively in Pennsylvania but recent polls show Obama opening up a comfortable lead.

Hillary Clinton also planned return visits to Ohio and Florida in the next few days and has scheduled trips to Omaha, Neb., and Minnesota.

She traveled Friday to Arkansas, her husband's home state and where she served 12 years as first lady, in hopes of making it more competitive for the Democratic ticket. A swing through Western battleground states is in the works as well.

Clinton did radio interviews this week in North Carolina, a reliably Republican state that has become a battleground in this presidential election. She also spoke to a Hispanic station in Florida and launched a women's canvass in Wisconsin Saturday by phone.

Aides said Hillary Clinton has been remarkably stoic about taking on the role of an Obama cheerleader following the close and often bitter primary in which she raised questions about his electability and readiness to govern.

Clinton's long and often bumpy career in public life has taught her to compartmentalize her feelings, her aides said, and by nature she does not dwell on the past.

In campaign appearances, she has pressed the need for a Democratic president to take on the nation's sour economy and crippling financial crisis. Polls during the Democratic primaries found voters gave her a clear edge over Obama when asked who would be a better economic steward.

"I think it is safe to say we have not seen more troubles at one time since World War Two," Clinton told a rally in Little Rock, Ark., Friday. "Probably no president will inherit more challenges that President Obama will, since Harry Truman had to take over from Franklin Roosevelt."

Aides said Clinton has headlined more than 50 events for Obama and has raised $10 million for his campaign since suspending her own presidential effort in June.

That was the BEST speech I EVER heard Hillary make-EVER! She didn't look or sound pre-packaged and it was Hilllary as I'Ve never seen or heard her before-her greatness is STILL ahead of her,not behind her.

I am an Obama supporter and I just what to say Thank You Hillary Clinton.

I watched the Scranton Rally today and was totally amazed by Hillary. Her speech today, in my opinion, was better than her speech at the convention. I have never seen her the way she was today. She campaigned for Obama today in a way I never saw her campaign for herself. She was on fire for him and hit the ball into outer space.

Ted Kennedy is known as the Lion of the Senate and today Hillary became the Lioness of the Senate.

It will be an AMAZEING transformation to watch 3,000 CORRUPTED administration officials LEAVE when Bush does. As McCain will NOT TRANSFORM nor REFORM Washington ,he can't because almost ALL of his campaign people ARE the SAME PEOPLE who have worked for BUSH !! In reality some of the Bush administration MIGHT remain, such as janitors, maids, kitchen help, ect. But hopefully it WILL be a reborn CLEAN ,FRESH and UNCORRUPTED legislative White House staff !!

A VERY GOOD article. So true and bold ,the Journalist / Editors show that FINALLY the main source of information for some people is STANDING up and stateing the TRUE FACTS ,without fear !The plight of MIDDLECLASS Americans are being used as political platforms,BY ALL partys.I want a President who has worked for MIDDLECLASS /POOR Americans LONG BEFORE he/she decided to become a professional politican, and I have found one in this race ,OBAMA. He was for US ,BEFORE he was for running for President !His community activist work shows that .That's the MAIN reason I will vote FOR Obama ,he HAS been FOR US ,before Himself ! He gave of himself BEFORE he became a Senator .I don't care who may have sat on those community action boards when he did or when he didn't or if they sat beside him or down from him ,they got SOMETHING DONE ,that's what matters.HE was FOR helping people BEFORE they started helping him with campaign funding, not afterwards...Barack Obama ,I hope you relize the JOB you will be takeing on,I hope you can KEEP just a few of your promises, and if you doubt that you can ,don't make those promises ! But do the BEST DAMN JOB YOU CAN, and with HONESTY ,INTEGRITY AND ETHICLY AND MORALLY !!

President Clinto is also coming to Texas to campaign on behalf of Rick Noriega, who is campaigning to replace Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas). The national media has consistently ignored Rick Noriega's campaign because it is underfunded. However, we all know that President Clinton would not come to Texas if there was not a reasonable chance that John Cornyn could be defeated!!

John Corny has repeatedly voted against benefits for veterans (my personal passion). He also routinely ignores the needs of seniors, in need of medicare (I'm almost there).

Please, please, please sned any funds you can to Rick Noriega's campaign. I realize that George Bush and his cronies have stolen almost everything you have, but John Cornyn wants to steal everything you have left, to benefit his buddies in Big Oil, big Banking and Big Insurance!!

If you're from Texas or have friends here, please call them to get out the vote!!

Here, Here "OldLeatherNeck"..............

Rep. Cornyn follows in the footsteps of some other "leading lights" of the Texas Republican party
Dick Armey, Phill Gramm,..and, of course, the "Grand Imperial Wizard" of corruption and chicanary
....Tom Delay...

...And I for one hope Texas voters expidite his retirement forthwith...

Regards,
TM

The smaller rural towns of Texas have been ignored by the democrats far to long ,when they should have been out in full force in our rural towns years ago .John Cornyn is not well thought of in Rural towns ,with good reasons, one is his dis-interest in the drug problems Rural Texas faces and the other was when Cornyn was a state attorney general, he gave an award to the infamous police officer who started the Tulia scandal, one of the WORST incidences of racial injustice in the United States. But many Texas rural towns ARE starting to get back into the 'swing' of HONEST POLITICS.Rural America has been hit hard in these past EIGHT years. And Texans ,who for so long have been loyal to their 'Good 0 Boys' when one runs for office are wakeing up and are trying to break the Republican hold on Rural http://www.txdemocrats.org/s.org/ and http://stopthedrugwar.org/

HopeGirl and renatam = Obama first, which is why they can't get over hating the Clintons for ANY reason

Lemme spell it out for you simpletons, Obama can't govern without the support of Hillary, Bill, and their supporters.

Just keep attacking the Clintons, your attacks do nothing but divide, just like the attacks from John McCain and Sarah Palin, your kind should not be allowed to exist.

I was able to overcome my h a t e of the Clintons from the primary season and I respect and thank them for all their hard work for Barack Obama and the Democratic Party.

HopeGirl and renatam you are beyond being rational and it's sad that you would rather continue the divide among Clinton and Obama supporters rather than working to unite and reach the goal of Obama being elected.

The ONLY reason I KNOW we're gonna get outta this is because the Clinton's are involved. They already proved they could do it before & it's even worst now. Hillary should be in there, but since she did'nt market herself as well as Barack, now she is still hanging in there because she is FOR THE PEOPLE as is Bill. You are everything that's wrong with people. You are precisely the reason Obama could lose.

Those "Obama First" people you are talking about will find it very hard to get past the insults in order to glean the positive message underneath.

There are likely to be those who are of the "lost cause" variety, so it's best not to join that "attack" mindset. Just spread a positive message of hope, unity, and prosperity. We're going to need it if our great nation is to survive the economic turmoil ahead.

That is what I am saying, we ALL have to unite as one party and more importantly one NATION to get Obama elected.

The stakes are too high in this election and HopeGirl and renatam would rather waste time attacking the Clintons for ANY reason and get distracted other than being productive and being rational? There's no hope for their kind.

We need unity, not distractions, and attacking the Clintons is just as much a distraction as the negative attacks from John McCain and Sarah Palin.

With that in mind, I've been following his career and was ecstatic when he decided to run for President.....but come on EVERYONE! Hillary is doing what needs to be done to get Obama elected.

The continued partisanship is rather entertaining, all this spitting and rancor amusing.

The Clinton's aren't out on the trail to please the Obama supporters, they are out there to persuade the undecided voters and Independents. They are heading into the areas where Hillary was strong and where Bill won (and some places he didn't) to appeal to those not sold as yet. You want them to come out strongly and @tt@ck the McPalin ticket full on, but there is nothing persuasive in that - in fact they would risk turning folks away from Obama if they did that.

Perhaps, since they are so odious to some of you, it would be better if they weren't campaigning at all for the Obama/Biden ticket?

New Yorkers won't be held hostage for Hillary Clinton to do what WE WANT. This is precisely the point. She SERVES at our pleasure, not the other way around. To that end, as with any other Senator -- she has no choice, if she is to keep her job and not be recalled as Senator Lieberman probably will be.

We fired a Governor this year. Alaska should do the same.

Wouldn't you want people to first give him the benefit of the doubt and then, if all evidence to the contrary says he was in the wrong, then allow him the opportunity to redeem himself? And if he were to make positive, redeeming strides, would you not afford him due praise?

It's not a matter of "hatred." It's a matter of doing what New Yorkers want. Period.

Just like ANY other Senator, Congressman/woman, Mayor (and Mayor Mike Bloomberg GETS this), Governor -- etc.

Don't vote for WARS we don't want...for personal ambition or side deals. Do what your constituents want. End of story. Why should we compromise OUR interests to serve Hillary and Bill Clinton? This is exactly what Senator Moynihan told us would happen -- on his deathbed. We didn't listen. Now we will have our JUNIOR Senator go out and do what we want -- or, she can join Senator Lieberman wherever he ends up.

"Clinton" seems to have become a d'irty word for some Obama supporters and vice versa.

Unity. Please.

Obama needs a mandate to get things done. Can we not let bygones be bygones? Can we stop reading negative things into EVERY thing the Clintons do and say? So what if they aren't frothing at the mouth with enthusiasm for Obama. That is what happens in a hard fought primary! It's a quite natural thing in politics. But I think it's evident that the Clintons are showing support for Obama and that is what matters.

Remember: Obama needs a mandate in order to get things done in those crucial first 100 days. That means EVERY vote counts. It would be good of us to examine our own grudges and consider putting them aside for the good of this country. We have ENORMOUS obstacles that need to be tackled. We need support from the majority of Americans so that we can pull together in order to rise up against these odds.

New Yorkers have a SITTING JUNIOR SENATOR who is our immediate future represenative and required SERIOUS PRESSURE to get on board -- over the last two weeks. We do not trust the Clintons and will not relent until Nov. 4th.

This isn't a personal Clinton DRAMA, nor do we intend for our State to continue to be leveraged as their platform for their agenda(s).

Pushing back on us doesn't help HRC -- at all. Believe it. Nor does ignorance of the facts of what some of us have had to do since the UN General Assembly two weeks ago -- help Senators Obama and Biden manage the Clintons. They know what we know. Constant PRESSURE is required. To the extent you are satisfied with what you are seeing, New Yorkers are owed a debt of gratitude and respect. With that said, we don't seek or expect it -- because the Clintons' performance is meant to impart they are the calvary. We get it...if you don't.

I'm hoping she puts her personal agenda aside for betterment of the country. She is getting the word out and that is good...

HopeGirl you're just a bitter Clinton hater that just can't get over the primary season

Would you prefer that Hill and Bill sit this one out and have a repeat of 2004 when they didnt campaign for John Kerry?

it's sad that people like you create the division that McCain desperately wants to gain the upper hand

Enough with the Clinton hating posts, its time to unite, remember united we stand, divided we fall

I am just being rational, something the Obama d i e-h ards Hopegirl and her BF renatam can't comprehend

While I support Obama fully, I realize it's not going to be Obama all the time with Bill and Hillary on the campaign trail, and I respect their contributions not only for the Obama campaign, but for the Dem party.

For HopeGirl and renatam it's Obama first and Obama only, something we can't have once Obama is elected. Obama can't govern without the respect of Hillary, Bill, and their supporters.

(the HP censors are in full effect on this thread!)

Please, please, let's stop hurling things like "b'itter" and "h'ater" and "people like you". If we are to encourage unity, we should use unifying language. Let's keep in mind that text makes it hard for people to understand the intent of the message when certain words are used.

I agree with your general sentiment though -- UNITED WE STAND!!

It's time for a progressive America!

No I stick by my posts, HopeGirl is a bitter Clinton hater that can't get over hating Bill and Hillary.

For her kind, Bill and Hillary can NEVER do enough for Obama, it's like theres an extra mile they have to cross.

HopeGirl doesn't understand it's not going to be Obama all the time once he is elected, he can't govern without the support of Hillary, Bill, and their supporters.

At a time when the Dem party needs unity, HopeGirl is just another Obama d i e hard that is about Obama first when it's really America first, and she is not doing any favors for the Dem Party, much less the Obama campaign.
