WASHINGTON — When Bill and Hillary Clinton take the stage Sunday at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, it will be the launch of an active campaign for their former nemesis Barack Obama in the home stretch of the 2008 presidential race.

The nation's best known and most powerful Democrats for nearly two decades, the former first couple is getting used to a new role: cheerleaders for Obama, who vanquished Hillary Clinton last spring in a Democratic primary contest for the ages.

Whatever recriminations the Clintons may still harbor from that long battle seem to have been nudged aside as they campaign in earnest for the Democratic ticket.

The New York senator and the former president will appear with Obama's running mate, Joe Biden, at a rally Sunday in Scranton, a working class town that has assumed something of an outsize role in the presidential race.

Biden was born in Scranton and lived there for several years as a child, while Hillary Clinton's father grew up in the town and is buried there. Both Biden and Clinton have emphasized their Scranton roots to illustrate their connection to blue collar voters.

After the rally, the Clintons will follow separate itineraries through presidential battleground states. They will also campaign on behalf of Democratic House and Senate candidates across the country.

Bill Clinton, who worked tirelessly for his wife during the primaries, seemed to take her loss more personally. Nonetheless, he gave Obama his full-throated endorsement at the Democratic convention in August. But he began stumping for the Illinois senator only recently, appearing at fundraisers and headlining two major events in Florida earlier this month.

After the Scranton rally, the former president was headed to Richmond and Roanoke, Virginia. He also planned events in the next few days in Ohio and Nevada, battleground states he won in 1992 and again in 1996.

Story continues below

Hillary Clinton was scheduled to hold a fundraiser for Obama on Sunday night in Philadelphia and planned a rally for him Monday in Montgomery County, a Philadelphia suburb rich in swing voters.

Clinton trounced Obama by 10 points in last spring's Pennsylvania primary, largely due to her strength among white working class voters. Sensing opportunity, Republican John McCain has campaigned actively in Pennsylvania but recent polls show Obama opening up a comfortable lead.

Hillary Clinton also planned return visits to Ohio and Florida in the next few days and has scheduled trips to Omaha, Neb., and Minnesota.

She traveled Friday to Arkansas, her husband's home state and where she served 12 years as first lady, in hopes of making it more competitive for the Democratic ticket. A swing through Western battleground states is in the works as well.

Clinton did radio interviews this week in North Carolina, a reliably Republican state that has become a battleground in this presidential election. She also spoke to a Hispanic station in Florida and launched a women's canvass in Wisconsin Saturday by phone.

Aides said Hillary Clinton has been remarkably stoic about taking on the role of an Obama cheerleader following the close and often bitter primary in which she raised questions about his electability and readiness to govern.

Clinton's long and often bumpy career in public life has taught her to compartmentalize her feelings, her aides said, and by nature she does not dwell on the past.

In campaign appearances, she has pressed the need for a Democratic president to take on the nation's sour economy and crippling financial crisis. Polls during the Democratic primaries found voters gave her a clear edge over Obama when asked who would be a better economic steward.

"I think it is safe to say we have not seen more troubles at one time since World War Two," Clinton told a rally in Little Rock, Ark., Friday. "Probably no president will inherit more challenges that President Obama will, since Harry Truman had to take over from Franklin Roosevelt."

Aides said Clinton has headlined more than 50 events for Obama and has raised $10 million for his campaign since suspending her own presidential effort in June.

I don't guys,,, it's just hard to trust the Clintons. What do they want this time? Why didn't they go to Florida? Obama and Biden seem to be handling Pensylvania just fine, why didn't the Clingtons go to Ohio or Florida, where it's a lot tighter? I just don't know about the Clintons. They come in last second and want to just get in on a successful state. Clintons should go get Arkansa for Obama, you know,, that would mean a lot,, a whole lot.

Sarah Palin is in PA throwing red meat for the wolves. She's harping on abortion and there are still a lot of social conservatives in rural PA. So, there is still a fight to be had there. I'm sure she will go to Ohio and Florida in the coming days.

Hillary has been to Ohio, Florida, and Arkansas. Read the article... "she told a rally at Little Rock, Ark." She has also been to Michigan, California, Nevada, and West Virginia. The MSM just didn't cover it. Bill has been to Florida as well. I think they were in Scranton because of something to do with their nephew... I'm not sure. But they were in Scranton anyway, so they decided to do a rally for Obama just because they were going to be there anyway.

New Yorkers have to endure 25 more days of PRESSURING our JUNIOR Senator to do what we want -- after the brutal last two years (for us). We have to endure 25 more days of worrying about the SECURITY of NYC -- and whether Mr. "bomb, bomb, bomb..." gets elected.

We have to keep PRESSURING our JUNIOR Senator to represent OUR interests and sideline hers -- and those of her family business interests, leveraging us as the Clinton's PLATFORM.

25 MORE DAYS....of begging OUR REPRESENTATIVES to think of us first...and not last.

We won't let up, because too much is at stake. We are BUYING Clinton Inc. by PRESSURING our JUNIOR Senator to do her job or risk RECALL, which is what is going to happen to Senator Lieberman (already underway).

We can play hardball, too.

After the UN General Assembly two weeks ago -- and the Clinton spectacle all across the media landscape -- in NYC, we decided to take matters in our own hands.

If you like the results..thank NEW YORKERS.

Did you even read the post?? before you go off on your pontificating??
She IS going to Florida, and HAS been in Florida and will be campaigning in Ohio as well....She has campaigned for him at 50 events, but if she makes the news then you say she is doing it for her own benefit, if she lays low then you are questioning her motives alas, you are as biased as Fox News, unable to open your mind and see things for what they are worth and can just speculate on your conspiracy theories....The reason the Clintons come in at the home stretch to campaign may be strategic, and it is up to the Obama campaign to use them as so....besides I don't see any other former democratic presidential candidates campaigning for Obama....where is Richardson? where is Dodd??

Just imagine for a minute if Barack and Michelle Obama had paraded five children out to meet America, one of which was a pregnant unwed teenager. Just imagine if Barack Obama had graduated fifth from the bottom in his class at the naval academy. Just imagine if Barack Obama was in his second marriage after having an extended affair and that his new wife made her money from distributing beer. Imagine if you will, how we tend to see things in a different light when the skin color isn't to our liking.

Just wait until the Latinos have the numbers to run the show,,, they will elect a no English speaking president. The whites will then have no choice but watch the Latino show. This day is coming. I kid you not,,, less than he whites see it. They better learn to be fair now so that the future majority who are the minority today may be lenient. The day is coming,,, it is inevitable.

TrueIndy08: And you knew this to be true and helped nominate a Black man to be the Democratic candidate for President of the United States? What does this say about the "New Democratic Party"?
Is this a new tactic designed to lose the election like the past two times, so we can revel in self pity some more. We can again say, "The Republicans stole the election from us", or "The Republicans are stupid and won't vote for a Black Man", or many of the other things Democrats have been whining about when they lose elections.
Why not try a winning tactic for a change. Even in a year when any Democratic candidate should have been able to beat any Republican candidate, Obama can't win without help from a world disaster caused by the Republican Party and even then, not without help from the Clintons.

The Palins are an example of white privilege in action!

The DUI husband, the criminal son, the ties to secessionists, the lies about the baby (Sarah is NOT the mother of that boy), none of this is questioned except on the blogosphere.

For the MSM and a large percentage of white americans, it is enough that they are white, that gives them instant qualifications.

but if you go to Harvard, and you are black.... you are an elttist

if you have only been married once and your kids are from the same parents.... and they are being raised the right way... thats still not enough

Palin's son is a misfit who got himself into trouble and that is why he joined the National Guard.... his ass should have joined the active duty Army.... get from under mommy!

But hey, he joined and thats what matters right.... when tons of minorities join and they say its bc they wanted the benefits....

You have a good point, H4O. It's calvary time. And the more I think of it, the more I wonder if it were a deliberate, strategic decision by the Clintons and Obamas for HRC to lay low until the last days. Like Fourth of July fireworks, it's grand finale time. Had Hillary been out their campaigning visibly for weeks on end, it would have lessened her impact as voters would almost get "used" to seeing her, you know? Tired, even. She's almost a "fresh face" at this point. Like her or not, she can pull in TONS of votes. And Clintonistas are seeing now more than ever the HUGE differences between McCain/Palin and Obama/Biden.

Bill Clinton TOLD the NY press, two weeks ago during the UN General Assembly -- and, during his "Clinton Global Intiative" activities (which didn't go over so well) -- HE CHOSE to wait until after the Jewish Holidays and his Global Initiative activities in NYC -- to go on the trail.

Translation:

1. They waited until after the UN General Assembly and their agendas, and invited McCain to be a speaker -- and lauded him during the activities that week, everywhere;
2. They wanted to watch the POLLS and wait until after the 2nd Debate;
3. New Yorkers had to step up the PRESSURE -- which we did, while Clinton Inc. looks like the calvary.

Cute.

Sarah Palin was in PA recently to rail about the abortion issue. I guess the theory was, "We'll attract Catholic votes by denouncing abortion rights." But Palin, who was baptized Catholic, left the church in her teens to become an evangelical protestant, which she remains to this day. Is that the example the Catholic Church wants for Catholic youth? A Catholic politician may not support abortion rights on a personal level, but may do so as a matter of public policy because of separation of church and state issues. The Catholic Church may not approve of that approach but still benefits from the person remaining in the Catholic community. Palin's example seems a boon to the evangelical protestant community (which has no great love for Catholics), at the expense of the Catholic Church.

At this point, she's just throwing red meat to the evangelicals who are frustrated by their impending election loss. The Clintons aren't perfect, but they *have* done a lot of good in this world and deserve due credit. Bill Clinton survived and thrived in the face of a relentless eight years of vicious and fictitious attacks from the Right. And yet so many of my fellow HuffPosters are still in the mindset of a 'primaries' fight. I know that some still harbor resentment, but let's not forget that things were said and done by *both sides* that weren't exactly kosher. The damage was done and now it is time to rebuild. If we want true progress, it is essential that we walk the walk and reach out to everyone -- Clintonistas, independents, conservatives alike. Sure, there are some "lost causes" but why belabor them with constant and tired divisive lines of attack?

I don't want to get too kumbaya on everyone, but.... can't we all just get along? :)

I think $1 BILLION DOLLARS from unvetted sources, during two crashes and a downturn -- translates into PAID IN FULL.

Time for the Presidency/Executive Branch to return to the what it was meant for -- PUBLIC SERVICE.

This is the end of the Bush Inc. and Clinton Inc. dynasties, though now that we see the result of their joint deregulation, we can see WHY they wanted to fuse politics/family-friend business interests safely behind the wall of PUBLIC SERVICE -- where it can and remains unvetted and very profitably SAFE.

I hope one of the surrogates (at least) will come to Oregon (especially the rural parts) and help defeat G. Smith. As moderate a repub some people think he is, he's supported G. Bush 90% of the time and needs to be replaced by Mr. Merkely. The race is very close and we could use a boost. Mail in voting starts next week so the sooner the better.

Hmm. Endorsements are nice, but I don't think Powell's endorsement will make a huge impact at this stage. Besides, Obama has this all but sewed up.

I know, this is an opportunity to redeem himself!

It would take a lot more than a late endorsement of Senator Obama to redeem himself. Perhaps, as a state's witness in a war crimes trial of Bush/Cheney/Rumsfield--as a part of his own plea bargain at the Hague.

Secretary Powell announced last month that he absolutely would not be making any endorsements until after all of the debates, if at all - at the World Challenges Forum.

I agree, and I could not be happier to have the Clintons on our side at this moment when not only do we need unity in the Democratic Party, we need the Clintons to be on our side as the McCain campaign turns up the heat and takes the low road against Barack

Sad how some can't come over their hatred from the Clintons during the primary season. I'll admit, I didn't approve of how the Clintons behaved during the primaries, but we aren't in the primaries anymore, we are in a very high stakes election with the pukes desperate to maintain the status quo, and we need all the Dem bigwigs to turn the page from the status quo.

New Yorkers listened carefully to Bill Clinton's comments TWO WEEKS AGO - during the UN General Assembly - and took very proactive action.

Nothing personal...but no more triangulation will be accepted.

You are seeing the results.

Agreed. We want a progressive mandate in order to get the hard work done. The Right Wing will be playing their "socialism" card (are they all stuck in the 50s or what?!) so it would be nice to show a large consensus for serious projects that will get America back on track to peace and prosperity.

Bill Clinton set up The Bridge to the 21st Century. Obama will help us cross it. Both men are equally important to the strength of our nation.
