WASHINGTON — When Bill and Hillary Clinton take the stage Sunday at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, it will be the launch of an active campaign for their former nemesis Barack Obama in the home stretch of the 2008 presidential race.

The nation's best known and most powerful Democrats for nearly two decades, the former first couple is getting used to a new role: cheerleaders for Obama, who vanquished Hillary Clinton last spring in a Democratic primary contest for the ages.

Whatever recriminations the Clintons may still harbor from that long battle seem to have been nudged aside as they campaign in earnest for the Democratic ticket.

The New York senator and the former president will appear with Obama's running mate, Joe Biden, at a rally Sunday in Scranton, a working class town that has assumed something of an outsize role in the presidential race.

Biden was born in Scranton and lived there for several years as a child, while Hillary Clinton's father grew up in the town and is buried there. Both Biden and Clinton have emphasized their Scranton roots to illustrate their connection to blue collar voters.

After the rally, the Clintons will follow separate itineraries through presidential battleground states. They will also campaign on behalf of Democratic House and Senate candidates across the country.

Bill Clinton, who worked tirelessly for his wife during the primaries, seemed to take her loss more personally. Nonetheless, he gave Obama his full-throated endorsement at the Democratic convention in August. But he began stumping for the Illinois senator only recently, appearing at fundraisers and headlining two major events in Florida earlier this month.

After the Scranton rally, the former president was headed to Richmond and Roanoke, Virginia. He also planned events in the next few days in Ohio and Nevada, battleground states he won in 1992 and again in 1996.

Hillary Clinton was scheduled to hold a fundraiser for Obama on Sunday night in Philadelphia and planned a rally for him Monday in Montgomery County, a Philadelphia suburb rich in swing voters.

Clinton trounced Obama by 10 points in last spring's Pennsylvania primary, largely due to her strength among white working class voters. Sensing opportunity, Republican John McCain has campaigned actively in Pennsylvania but recent polls show Obama opening up a comfortable lead.

Hillary Clinton also planned return visits to Ohio and Florida in the next few days and has scheduled trips to Omaha, Neb., and Minnesota.

She traveled Friday to Arkansas, her husband's home state and where she served 12 years as first lady, in hopes of making it more competitive for the Democratic ticket. A swing through Western battleground states is in the works as well.

Clinton did radio interviews this week in North Carolina, a reliably Republican state that has become a battleground in this presidential election. She also spoke to a Hispanic station in Florida and launched a women's canvass in Wisconsin Saturday by phone.

Aides said Hillary Clinton has been remarkably stoic about taking on the role of an Obama cheerleader following the close and often bitter primary in which she raised questions about his electability and readiness to govern.

Clinton's long and often bumpy career in public life has taught her to compartmentalize her feelings, her aides said, and by nature she does not dwell on the past.

In campaign appearances, she has pressed the need for a Democratic president to take on the nation's sour economy and crippling financial crisis. Polls during the Democratic primaries found voters gave her a clear edge over Obama when asked who would be a better economic steward.

"I think it is safe to say we have not seen more troubles at one time since World War Two," Clinton told a rally in Little Rock, Ark., Friday. "Probably no president will inherit more challenges that President Obama will, since Harry Truman had to take over from Franklin Roosevelt."

Aides said Clinton has headlined more than 50 events for Obama and has raised $10 million for his campaign since suspending her own presidential effort in June.

The Clintons appreciate what a disaster it would be if McCain / Palin were elected. They definitely don't want to get any of the blame for that disaster. I haven't been a big fan of the Clintons, but if they help the country avoid the McCain / Palin catastrophe, I will personally drink a toast to Hillary and Bill.

Mark Penn hired Karen Hughes at Burston -- to execute Hillary Clinton's strategy for Sarah Palin.

They still work for Hillary Clinton as well.

I love it...keep on speaking the lies.

I still think the Clintons should have taken maybe a week off after the primaries and then got back on the campaign trail for Obama.

The stakes in this election are historic. Getting a democratic to win the presidency and getting more dems into Congress is so critical. How could they sit still for even one day? If they truly cared, wouldn't they have done that?

If they HAD done this, if they had campaigned their hearts out everyday for Obama then my opinions of them would have changed. But given their behavior in the primaries, and their overall lack of vigor the last two months, my opinion is basically unchanged. I don't trust them.

I am glad they are doing this now. Go for it. I hope it helps, but for the record Obama was headed for a big win without that much help from them. I hope the history books get that one right.

New Yorkers had to exert a tremendous amount of PRESSURE for you to see what you saw today. Believe it.

We realize most Americans don't see/know this. So be it.

We will continue to remind the JUNIOR Senator what her DAY JOB is...and who is BOSS.

It ain't Bill.

Hillary has done over 50 events for Obama and has raised nearly $10 million.

That hardly sounds like sitting still.

New Yorkers voted for her TWICE, when she told us she had no other ambition than to be the Junior Senator from NYS. We funded her Campaign to the tune of almost $100 million, leveraging our State and -- particular -- our City -- as her PLATFORM.

Her job is to do (finally) what New Yorkers want -- irrespective to her FUTURE AMBITION.

Bottom line...the Clintons are cooperating because it is politically expedient to do so.

And to their credit, they do it very well and very convincingly when they want to. Hillary shined today. Bill was adequate.

But it was what it was.

I agree. They have made their position clear. That is the opposite of what New Yorkers want -- and not the first time they have had to choose between their AMBITION/AGENDAS and Hillary Clinton's DAY JOB. Nothing new under the sun, here.

They have to be pressured (by us) to make the motions. It looks good on T.V., but New Yorkers can no longer afford to be (Bosnia) delusional about our Junior Senator and her Republican-lite allegiances. That doesn't serve us.

With that said, the ACT is good enough -- for now.

You need to understand the distinction between "bashing" and New Yorkers who reserve the RIGHT to critique current conduct of their JUNIOR Senator -- and representative. Period.

You need to RESPECT New Yorkers demanding and pressuring Senator Clinton to DO HER JOB -- her DAY JOB -- and that is to do what WE WANT. Hillary Clinton didn't do the job of supporting OUR Candidate for the Presidency -- until we forced her to to do. We will continue to excercise OUR RIGHTS as American citizens.

Period.

Bill's speech was very self serving for Hillary and he did a great disservice to Obama and Biden. It seemed that he Bill thought him being on stage was enough. The Biden's went out of their way to praise his presidency, but Bill did very little to talk up Obama/Biden except to say that Hillary was a good sport and had campaigned more than any other runner up in history for the nominee. Bill has done a lot of damage with his relationship with a the AA community and it is becoming more and more glaring.

His choice. There will be consequences. Bill can't trade any longer on the past. He's had a good run and made a HUGE fortune during two crashes and unvetted Intl. DEALS.

His choice how he wants to go forward -- and, how he will be remembered.

Most boomers have had to do this long before 60 years old.

His choice.

Face it, Bill was giving information on his background and contrasting it to the losses of the past eight years.

With Bill and Hillary its not going to be all Obama all the time, what else can they say about Barack Obama other than how he is going to turn the page on the past eight years of George Bush?

Bill is doing what he must do - reminding his supporters why they love him and Hillary and how they must use that same love and excitement to vote for Barack Obama.

AIDS is a worldwide pandemic - and not unique or exclusive to the AA or African communities.

The Clinton Foundation has been the peer to the fundraising for the Clinton Library, Hillary Clinton Campaign warchest and Clinton family personal fortune -- and other INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS INTESTS -- to the tune of a total approaching $1 BILLION (still unvetted) dollars. This is a stunning amount even by NYC standards.

The Clinton Foundation has been a very good vehicle for familia Clinton to keep their interests -- some offshore -- unvetted.

Warren Buffet and Bill Gates, conversely -- have not tied strings to their donations and philanthropy -- nor do they need it as a cover for their prodigious business activities.

AAs are more sophisticated than you give credit for. This isn't 1965, when AAs have to be GRATEFUL for a former President -- who AAs kept from being IMPEACHED -- forever and for whatever he does.

Your premise is flawed and so was theirs...which is WHY they lost.

The Clintons want us ALL to be grateful. Public Service means they should be GRATEFUL to Americans who gave them the opportunities to serve. Now, we will have a President and VP who understand the true nature of the role of the Presidency and Executive Branch.
