WASHINGTON — When Bill and Hillary Clinton take the stage Sunday at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, it will be the launch of an active campaign for their former nemesis Barack Obama in the home stretch of the 2008 presidential race.

The nation's best known and most powerful Democrats for nearly two decades, the former first couple is getting used to a new role: cheerleaders for Obama, who vanquished Hillary Clinton last spring in a Democratic primary contest for the ages.

Whatever recriminations the Clintons may still harbor from that long battle seem to have been nudged aside as they campaign in earnest for the Democratic ticket.

The New York senator and the former president will appear with Obama's running mate, Joe Biden, at a rally Sunday in Scranton, a working class town that has assumed something of an outsize role in the presidential race.

Biden was born in Scranton and lived there for several years as a child, while Hillary Clinton's father grew up in the town and is buried there. Both Biden and Clinton have emphasized their Scranton roots to illustrate their connection to blue collar voters.

After the rally, the Clintons will follow separate itineraries through presidential battleground states. They will also campaign on behalf of Democratic House and Senate candidates across the country.

Bill Clinton, who worked tirelessly for his wife during the primaries, seemed to take her loss more personally. Nonetheless, he gave Obama his full-throated endorsement at the Democratic convention in August. But he began stumping for the Illinois senator only recently, appearing at fundraisers and headlining two major events in Florida earlier this month.

After the Scranton rally, the former president was headed to Richmond and Roanoke, Virginia. He also planned events in the next few days in Ohio and Nevada, battleground states he won in 1992 and again in 1996.

Story continues below

Hillary Clinton was scheduled to hold a fundraiser for Obama on Sunday night in Philadelphia and planned a rally for him Monday in Montgomery County, a Philadelphia suburb rich in swing voters.

Clinton trounced Obama by 10 points in last spring's Pennsylvania primary, largely due to her strength among white working class voters. Sensing opportunity, Republican John McCain has campaigned actively in Pennsylvania but recent polls show Obama opening up a comfortable lead.

Hillary Clinton also planned return visits to Ohio and Florida in the next few days and has scheduled trips to Omaha, Neb., and Minnesota.

She traveled Friday to Arkansas, her husband's home state and where she served 12 years as first lady, in hopes of making it more competitive for the Democratic ticket. A swing through Western battleground states is in the works as well.

Clinton did radio interviews this week in North Carolina, a reliably Republican state that has become a battleground in this presidential election. She also spoke to a Hispanic station in Florida and launched a women's canvass in Wisconsin Saturday by phone.

Aides said Hillary Clinton has been remarkably stoic about taking on the role of an Obama cheerleader following the close and often bitter primary in which she raised questions about his electability and readiness to govern.

Clinton's long and often bumpy career in public life has taught her to compartmentalize her feelings, her aides said, and by nature she does not dwell on the past.

In campaign appearances, she has pressed the need for a Democratic president to take on the nation's sour economy and crippling financial crisis. Polls during the Democratic primaries found voters gave her a clear edge over Obama when asked who would be a better economic steward.

"I think it is safe to say we have not seen more troubles at one time since World War Two," Clinton told a rally in Little Rock, Ark., Friday. "Probably no president will inherit more challenges that President Obama will, since Harry Truman had to take over from Franklin Roosevelt."

Aides said Clinton has headlined more than 50 events for Obama and has raised $10 million for his campaign since suspending her own presidential effort in June.

I am not interested in what Hill or Bill wore or if they have had work done. I am just thrilled that they are standing behind their team and working to get the job done. And in case we have forgotten what that is, ELECT OBAMA/BIDEN in the White House on November 4, 2008.

Obama and Biden have each used excellent judgment at least once in the past. Michelle Obama and Jill Biden are class acts.

How degrading. The smartest, most accomplished couple in the world...reduced to stumping for
a first-term senator with a following akin to hannah montana's. Our economy, values, and judgments are all going into the toilet.

Stop it. Stop trying to divide us.

I am a die-hard Hillary supporter, and I couldn't be happier that she is supporting Obama.

If you care at all about any of the issues that Hillary championed, then it's logical to support Obama.

That's what happens when you willingly degrade yourself like the masochisticClintonteam. They know a lot about toilet behavior.

enough with the divisive Clinton bashing posts

At least the Clintons are working their hearts out for the Democratic Party because they know the stakes are too high

United we stand, divided we fall, and your divisive Clinton bashing posts are no better than John McCain's divisive attacks calling Barack Obama a t errorist

The best leaders first learned how to dutifully serve.

This is not degrading at all. It's called working hard for the ideology (not solely for the man) you believe in.

The Clintons are proving to be good, trusted servants of American democracy.

Bravo to them for having the strength to do so, despite the negativity hurled at them.

The smartest couple in the world... really??

I don't know about that. I do admire the Clintons but they have unfortunate tendencies to declare "Mission Accomplished" and that is dangerous (as we have seen). Pray tell, why couldn't she win if she is half of the smartest couple in the world?

Methinks you are not terribly objective.

Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden burned down the barn this afternoon in PA. Two magnificent speeches that put the sleazy McCain Palin rallies to shame. They spoke to the issues and made the case. Good politics this afternoon from the Democratic Party. Hillary did a fantastic job and Biden showed us exactly why he was such a sound choice for vp. He's invaluable to the ticket.

I think having the Clintons and Biden appear together today was a pretty good strategy. Seeing the three of them on stage really made Sen O look like a washingon outsider, he looked like the new guy with fresh ideas but they came across as the "old guard", nothing new....

I think that Hilary is being a good sport and that she wants to work for the party. I think that Bill sees the parade leaving without him and is running to jump in front as a leader so he will have that connection. I think both of them understand that if Obama wins without them looking very supportive it will be the end of both their leadership in the Democratic party.

I believe that Obama can win without them, but I thank them for their help and I am glad they are on board, we need all the support we can get!

OBAMA '08!

I think that until as recently as the convention, they truly thought Obama couldn't and wouldn't actually win, just as they've thought all along.

The economic crisis changed all that. They finally realize that he can win, and further, that the stakes are now higher if Obama loses then they were just three weeks ago, and they don't dare risk even the perception of being to blame for an Obama loss when the consequences of a loss could be so incredibly dire for so many.

Hillary to Bill Richardson: He can't win Bill.

Funny, the loser commenting on someone else's ability to win.

Jill was fabulous too...especially her remarks about (naturally) education, particularly her comment about how in hard times, college is the first thing to go by the wayside.

Jill Biden is a CLASS ACT. We'd welcome HER here in NYC any day. We could use some CLASS from our representatives. 2008 hasn't been a good year for us. Govenor out in disgrace. Charlie Rangel soon to follow and hijacking Obama votes for Clinton Inc. in Harlem during our Primaries. Familia Clinton...

Hillary was fantastic!! So was Jill she is good too! While the subjects with all focused on each other and a political reunion it was positive that they all clearly support Obama. Let the past go no one ever could have realized the mess we have today. The ticket that will get the best results is Obama/Biden who can dig us out.

Bidens remark about global warming and Palin in the debate great!

All these problems this next president aside will have to deal with?

I can never forget the hate and fear spewing from the Palin & McCain rallies last week? Palin is still on attack today and she is dangerous. McCain now has to do a straighter rallie and he's flubbing it big time. Palin can go on and help her opponents with her stupidity.

I watched Biden on the stump in PA with Hillary and they both came out swinging. Especially Joe Delaware. That man is a stone cold killer behind a microphone. Obama/ Biden=Ice/Fire. If they keep this up, the Repubs will be crushed in November. McSame is on the ropes and I say "FINISH HIM!"
